Dissonante Media takes you on a journey aboard sword-fishing vessel Jaxon T and Captain Hoang Gia Anh demonstrates how some of the largest commercially caught fish in the world are boarded and brought to market for top dollar. This is a rare glimpse into the lives and perspectives of the fishermen who make the Honolulu Fish Auction possible.

I spent more than 20 years riding ships in the Coast Guard. this was the "best" video presentation I have ever seen regarding the long liner. Thanks to Capt. Hoang Gia Anh, the crew, and to you for such an enjoyable presentation of the hard work needed to provide the fresh fish we all enjoy.

I'm Vietnamese and the translation at 18:02 is completely off. Who the hell translated this??? This is what the dude really said: "I get very worried on board this boat. Not only for myself but for every crew member. These guys are like my brothers, so I look out for everyone of them. We look out and take care of each other in this long journey of life on the ocean." He didn't complain anything about work, or long hours, or personal family or saving up for school. His message is similar to those on a battlefield, their main concern is the brotherhood livelihood of the dangerous life on the ocean. *Shake my head*

As a sport fisherman, I’m not a huge fan of long liners but understand the how and why of what they do. Cool video and great documentary, also get that poor guy a decent wetsuit, if he is going to enter the food chain and possibly get eaten by something he might as well be warm while doing it……tight lines!

This is me in 2012 in Hawaii. Fishing in international waters for 21 days on a Vietnamese boat. Not me in video, just me as in I was doing it. Captains make well over 50k dollars every every 35 days.. 21 days in ocean 14 days at land by law. You can contract people from random islands outside USA and pay them $400 a month to work for you as long as they dont leave the boat and touch US soil. Crazy money crazy dangerous crazy work, once in a lifetime BEAUTIFUL experience, swordfish, merlins, mayko sharks, blue eyed tuna, biggest fish in the oceans every night.

just because one person is using a butterknife to kill the worlds natural 'last frontiers' beauty, doesn't make one any better than another using a butchers knife. think about this carefully before you reply, i know you will need a lot of time to process this.

ntwa dumela I would much rather be cut with a sharp knife ! Its people like you that don't know or have a clue about what you are talking about. I have Swordfished a long time over 20 years. When you don't understand is because you don't know. Next time you're eating fish think about where it came from and how it was caught.
@ntwadumela6566
@ntwadumela6566 10 жыл бұрын
joey presnell why are you replying when you don't even understand my point? it doesn't matter if you use a blunt butterknife or a sharp butchers knife you are still killing, that is the point to the original post saying "this is the best way to fish" and you don't understand where this is filmed, honalulu (hawaii) and guess who the fishermen are? ASIAN. this is happening all over the pacific, asians corperates bribe small pacific island officials to be able to fish in their waters. the islanders lose out, their habitat is overfished and most of the fish will be exported to where the real demand is ASIA. this isn't catching for what you need, this is fishing for a bigger demand in other expanding countries. so how about you mind your own business, you can't see the forest for the trees in your stupid remark "Next time you're eating fish think about where it came from" my country regulates its waters and isn't corrupt. YOU don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

I agree, as a recreational fisherman who tags and releases nearly all the oceanic gamefish that I catch, I want my children in the future to be able to catch and release those fish as well. Some serious reforms need to be made as the harvest levels in places like Hawaii are not regulated for sustainability. We need to look into fish farming and global regulation if we want to enjoy catching and eating those fish in the future.

+Robert b b Dont even try explaining to them, they are against people making a living. The idiot above thinks that shark died, instead of listening to what the guy said, he makes his own conclusion. Who cares anyway, it's a shark that is not endangered and the shark swam away with little damage from the hook. This is actually one of the safest ways to fish for swordfish. Hawaii'an based ships have gotten great at eliminating bird and turtle bycatch but these people have to make a living and fishing is one of the few ways to do it for people in the Pacific islands and East Asia

Caleb, this was not a documentary but rather an autoethnographic report, a story-telling of your experience and knowledge in the area. The differences are real. It behooves you to research this type of research area if you wish to provide extra dimensions in this medium in the future. Understanding the tensions between points of view, what an individual sees and an ethnography and the fiction of docu-something are precise in this type of reportage. Good luck.

T Ryan So you ignored his comments about this not being the final cut, yet criticized it like it was a final cut. That is on you. He was kind enough to share something very cool that only a few people in the world will ever see. Yet you try to pick it apart while stroking your own over blown ego. I personally loved the film. He showed them in a very good light with a lot of respect for the boat crew. I did not feel there was any over drama. Just "documenting" a few weeks of what real hard working people do. I bet in your whole life you will never work as hard as any one of these boat crew do in just 3 weeks. Your comments only make you look like an ass. Again great video and good luck in the future on more great "documentaries".

This was very amazing. If it wasn't for all fisherman many species would be out of control. For example right now in Canada they have a King crab infestation and it's getting worse. But because of Covid-19 no one can help with the problem. And from what I've heard. The crab is eating away all of the fish that were there. Salmon, bass, trout, and pretty much everything else. Chef Ramsey went there to of course catch and cook one and he even said that it was out of control. Crabs multiply very fast and without fisherman they would get out of control. Only problem is a lot of people have died due to the massive weather storms.
