This Squamish Historical Society video documentary is based on selected images of Indigenous People from the State of Washington, British Columbia, and the coast of Alaska, captured by frontier photograper Edward S. Curtis between 1896 and 1930, during his epic journey across North America.

As a native coastal Oregonian, interested in the history of all of the people of the Pacific northwest, I found this to be a wonderful tribute to the true Natives of my homelands! Their spirits live on by our remembrance of their lives and their sacrifices.

This is a wonderful video!! Thank you for sharing it here on KZbin. Thank you Edward Curtis for your work capturing these indigenous people and their lives and culture. I'm from Renton, Land of the Duwamish and Muckleshoot. I was born here in 1950. I have always been fascinated by our PNW history and again, thank you for sharing some of the history before the history I was taught.

Thank God for Mr. Curtiss! He knew these native cultures were disappearing and was driven to complete his work before it was too late! In his time, traversing North America could not have been easy. It was truly a labor of love!

Thank God for the foresight he had in the preservation of the Natives he’s documented. If not for him, there would be nothing.

History has already been wiped. Written only by the victors and psychopaths. We may never know the truth.

All but extinct? Culture survives, Haida still in Alaska. Just want to see what you meant.

+nlgoddess definitely not all tribes cultures are extinct and are still practiced in secret and sacred ceremonial purposes.

+xxgoldenarmsx I am glad to hear this! Traditions, music, art, language, religion, must be kept alive. Or we too will find ourselves among the forgotten and misunderstood. I fear that there will be only a few that will survive the once many tribes of the PNW. And not just survive as a people, but as a culture.
