Good Apollo is a masterpiece. As much as I LOVE IKSSE, Good Apollo is probably still the best album I've listened to in the past 20-25 years. Still hasn't been topped.

Mostly agree with this one. Might have the debut in A. The Vaxis ones in C. Black Rainbow POSSIBLY B. But overall good. -- Joe

Descension is the stronger of the afterman albums IMO. Really a complete package over the 3-4 album carrying songs on Ascension.

I think they’re both pretty consistent. Maybe one dud on each.

For me it's S Tier SSTB, IKS, GA3 A tier NWFT, Descension B Tier: Ascension (the first coheed album that had skippable songs for me) YOTBR (underrated, good songs, bad production and mixing) Vaxis 1 C Tier: Vaxis 2 TCBTS (this album felt particularly undercooked, for a deeply personal album I felt like Claudio was lyrically at his weakest here).

it's funny, a former blogger I knew and sadly passed away a few years ago talked about with Good Apollo 1, being good, but not as great as In Keeping Secrets in his big epic End of Year list in 2005. I never found out if he felt that way years later, but his comment always stuck out to me. Maybe also for the fact it was right when I got into Coheed and I was attached to Good Apollo 1. Good Apollo 2 though was super disappointing to me after loving Good Apollo 1 so much. I remember the Prog wasn't as shown as much, which in some ways may have been a little unfair to it. Also the fact it came out in 2007 which was a massive year for new records, it got lost in the shuffle a bit for me.

The context where and when you get into music really shapes your perception. I was shown Coheed by my best friend growing up, and didn’t come around until college

I must admit I just can’t get into this band and I have their first four albums.I have tried and tried but now those cds collect dust on the shelf.I came here to try and peak my interest.I will try again in the next few days.

They have a very specific, niche sound, despite their classic rock & metal influences. An acquired taste, for sure... I feel like an appreciation for early 2000's post hardcore is important. I recommend continuing, because a couple of their albums are in my top 20 all time.

S - IV, III A - afterman (both), NWFT, B - YOBR, SS C- vaxis 2 & 1 D - colors (to be fair idk that I’ve ever listened to it all the way through so I probably shouldn’t even rank it)

I agree with most of your rankings, however personally I prefer Vaxis 2 over Vaxis 1 by a good deal. I don't dislike Vaxis 1, it's a solid album, but I felt that the sequel was more playful and was more willing to do interesting stuff that kept it engaging for me, not to mention I think the title track is one of the best songs Coheed has written, easily top 5 for me. That said, I feel like should give Vaxis 1, along with CBTS and YOTBR, more thorough listens. They're the albums I've engaged with the least and I imagine my opinion of them would improve if I were to give them more of a shot. Anyways, good tier list! I'd be interested in seeing another.

Thanks Daniel. I do love Window of the Waking Mind. I find Vaxis 1 pretty consistent despite its length. YOTBR deserves more listens, and it's definitely more layered and dense than CBTS, but the production and writing are probably their worst.

Hey Matt, I largely agree with your list. Coheed are by far my favourite contemporary band and I've racked up many, many hours of listening time on each album too. My only difference I think is that I should score CBTS the lowest ranking as I think in comparison to the world beating first three, it's a different band completely. These guys are capable of incredible things and CBTS is very formulaic and forgettable. My other difference is Vaxis I and II. Although I'm a huge Prog fan and 78 minute long albums are part of my being. This one outstays it's welcome for me, it's very fatty. Long for the sake of being long. It's got some killer tracks but if they were to remove say 3-4 songs including Queen of the Dark, Night Time Walkers and I'm sorry, Pavillion. This could be just as good as GA2 for me. Great list!

Thanks Jonathan! Agreed with CBTS being the lowest rank. I would find it harder to cut tracks off of Vaxis 1, but they could have trimmed down some of the simpler songs in length.

@@MattOLearyMusic I mean it’s up to a B. Lol. Hollywood the cracked, Mothers of Men, & Good Night Fair Lady I guess. They have the same problem of being minimal effort and just not something that stands out from their a average attempts at arena rock (Hollywood and Mothers, specifically). Which is my big issue with NWFT also. Felt homogenized and not for their fans. Which is a huge issue for me when it’s supposed to be the big saga ending album. But it doesn’t take away from the great songs on those albums. Evagria is amazing, I love The Afterman as well. And on NWFT we got Mother Superior and Gravemakers and Gunslingers! I’ve almost convinced myself to knock them both down to C and putting Color Before the Sun up to B. I love their pop-rock and emo sounds. I got into them from Favor House and the Suffering. Since I have been giving it another shot I have been really enjoying Color. I also have really been enjoying Jessie’s Girl 2 a lot more than I originally did. Shame that isn’t on an album.
