My grandfather was a boiler lagger for Ansells during World War 2, it was an essential job so he did not have to go to war. He was spraying asbestos into large boilers, no breathing masks were provided as its dangers were not yet known about. Suffice it to say, all those year ago as a young child into my teenage years, having to listen and watch my grandfather get slower and slower and struggle to catch his breath, it was awful. It did not cause him cancer, but it slowly ripped his lungs apart in being useless to process oxygen. Asbestos is amongst the worst things we've ever used and you don't know if you've been exposed until many years later.

And removing it is incredibly dangerous and difficult. I know factories that have it and have specialized teams to refix and refit the asbestos pipes because it's way too dangerous to the factory to rip it all out.

@jampine82682 ай бұрын
@MollymaukT at the time the Frostpunk apocalypse started, all that was known of asbestos was it was good for fire proofing, and it keeps heat in/out, so they'd vote for it not to freeze. It's almost 100 years since the original game is set that it was widely known asbestos causes cancer, and I'm willing to bet the frozen apocalypse put most research not relating to survival on hold.

From what I understand, "hesitant" voters are just random chance like some of the decisions while scouting in the first game. Whether or not you can lose the election: I have no clue. I just know that the random voters will probably vote with whatever the majority will be. So, you're incentivised to, y'know, get close to the majority so there is less chance you will fail.

I assume there was a law further down the line to upgrade it but who knows lol. Given the technology level they're working with in the game, abestos probably has enough benefits to make it worthwhile. I assume that when half your people are dying of starvation and frostbite, risks of cancer aren't that seriously considered.

The Walmart I used to work at still had asbestos floor tiles up until about 15ish years ago, and when it was discovered they had to bring in a whole decontamination - hazmat team. Big plastic bubble tents, full body protection suits with oxygen tank backpacks like you see in movies with radiation or disease outbreaks. It was a huge thing.

Disturbing asbestos, especially working with it day in and day out is a problem. They originally found the problems with it when the young children of the workers from the asbestos mines starting having respiratory issues. They traced it to the fact that the fathers would hold the children and the children would inhale the asbestos fibers. It's sort of like working with lead: you need to be very careful about not taking it home and limiting your exposure at work. I worked with lead and once I started using coveralls, changing out of them at work, and keeping a separate set of boots there my levels dropped dramatically and they weren't even close to being a concern.

In 2024, the EPA announced a new rule to ban all ongoing uses of asbestos by 2037. The rule is the first to be implemented under 2016 amendments to the Toxic Substances Control Act. Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia, India, Pakistan, China, Cuba, North Korea, Mexico, and Vietnam are the nations that still allow the use of asbestos. As a matter of fact, Russia is the world's leader in asbestos mining.

Asbestos that is in good condition and left undisturbed is unlikely to present a health risk. The risks from asbestos occur when it is damaged or disturbed where asbestos fibers become airborne and can be inhaled. Managing asbestos in place and maintaining it in good repair is often the best approach. Desperate times.

With the asbestos choice. Couldn't you just ignore it till it disappeared? IDK, maybe if you progress further more choices will be available as more things are available for research? Imma try to ignore it in my playthrough.
@bacardimonk2 ай бұрын
he had like 3 other choices on that tech tree alone, then there were the tabs at the top that allow for other choices. On top of that there are faction relations to consider, ofc for the first few choices go with whatever floats yer boat. The faction thing is even more important the further you develope, different costs, different options, new techs that only appear after a certain number of same faction choices etc. New factions can appear, some factions can splinter into hardlne factions. The whole social side is VERY in depth and WILL greatly effect a single playthrough, which in turn allows multiple playthroughs with different outcomes. Allthough the map itself both local and world will remain the same in story mode, but in Utopia mode it is more randomised
@sweetoleander9048Ай бұрын
@@bacardimonk The problem I'm seeing in my playthrough is that it's getting colder soon and I don't see anyway to click other options yet as it's too early in game. Have you tested yet if people won't die if there's no insulation when it drops two levels of cold? I hesitantly clicked it as I could see no other options. I have the same complaint as Cohh. This early in a game there aren't other available options other than asbestos.

@@JBMorris9 its gonna be just like what Cohh said earlier. its a different perspective from a game mechanics sense but i feel like the dread you'll experience will still be very similar to the first game. You'd have seen in it the prologue where you race against time and could literally kill an entire baby seal colony just to stockpile enough food to survive the whiteout there. It all skepticism at this point and we're looking at the VERY early chapters of the game, chances are it'll only escalate in stakes, danger and horror as the playthrough ensues. what is usually a 1-2 hour playthrough for a normal scenario in FP1 is looking to be 10 in this game. and the replayability value is pretty much the same if not better from what i saw. I would be willing to bet money this is gonna be a GOTY contender, but alas, only time will tell
