Use washing soda - not baking soda. Don't use salt. Don't use stainless steel. Use plain old iron, steel or carbon rod as your sacrificial piece. Positive connector on the sacrificial piece. Negative connector on the work piece. Keep your connectors out of the water!

Agree with Matthew King comment. DO NOT use stainless steel; it gives off toxic gas. Use iron like in rebar.

Replace the salt with baking soda, it makes a difference... speaking from experience, also I hook the negative to the coin not the positive.

Exactly negative to coin ( cathode) positive to sacrificial (anode) and baking soda is better

You got the polarity wrong. Negative goes to the coin, positive to the sacrificial metal. You probably just plated the coin with stainless steel.

use baking soda instead of salt because salt will produce chlorine gas

Niv Moshe the sodium hydroxide could be useful if you are making sodium metal
@nivmoshe5536
@nivmoshe5536 7 жыл бұрын
Drake Mckay actualy its hard to extract the sodium hydroxide by that way because it will react with the chlorine gas at the anode and will produce soduim hypochlorite bleach

+Ivan Tsantsarov I just put both ends of the electrodes in the water in the one started foaming was the one I connected to the coin
@tsantsarovivan
@tsantsarovivan 8 жыл бұрын
+Rocky Mountain Prospector Ryan, I think that positive charged Cl ion grabs an atom from the fork, deliver it to the coin and then Cl gas releases in form of bubbles. That is what caused foaming
@PeteVanDemark
@PeteVanDemark 7 жыл бұрын
Hard to believe but just about everything in the water came from the fork because your polarity was reversed.

The electrolysis doesn't harm the copper I don't believe. At least when I've done it the coin didn't seem to have been affected by the reaction going on.

A small sheet of copper in place of the fork and use some copper sulfate in your water... then you won't loose any copper, as it is your copper with replacing Fe++.

While this is s harmless thing to do to any common, low value coin, I recommend refraining from doing this to any coin who's value you're not sure of. In the world of rare coins, a shiny coin is worth nothing it if you've even made a tiny scratch or change to the originality of the coin in the process. Cool experiment nevertheless.

@@nathanholyland9493 while you use SS as an anode, the chrome that is finished on the steel is also be released. This releases hexavalent chromium poisoning which can only be released if chrome is heated, or being separated from where it is placed. It's very dangerous, and the effects are just as bad as chloride gas.
