If you know the orientation when it lands in your palm you can do a quick maneuver to flip the coin if it was called unfavorably to you while flipping it onto the back of your other hand. This is why football coin tosses land on the ground to prevent manipulation.

I have a similar trick to always guessing correctly even when someone else is flipping the coin. It got me out of a detention in 7th grade, too. In 10th grade, we had to do a project where we flipped and coin 100 times, and I got heads 100 times.

With a half dollar flip (sometimes with a quarter), when it lands in my hand I can close my fingers and feel if my finger tips are touching the heads or the tails side. Then I can choose how to open my hand (coin on my palm or coin on the fingers) to select which one to show. I have a difficulty doing this with quarters because it's hard for my finger tips to tell the sides apart. The head on a half dollar is smoother.

I have my own way that requires processing speed instead of practicing flipping. My version allows you to control which side you land on without any special flipping. It involves catching the coin between your fingers before flipping it upside down onto the back of your hand/arm

I learned that trick 60 year ago, when I was a kid in Mexico. A Peso is larger than a quarter. the larger the coin the easier. If you just use your fingers to flip it rather than with your thumb, it is very easy.

When I was a kid, I taught myself to be able to flip tails about 9 out of 10 times. End over end, as he showed first. It really just became like a muscle memory thing, kind of a rhythm flipping it roughly the same height every time. Wish I had a scientific reasoning behind it, but I don't. I just know that it worked for me.

I mean the scientific reasoning would be: since you practiced you were able to become extremely consistent in flipping the coin the same height, at the same angle, with the same amount of force giving you a level of consistency that normally wouldn't be present and thus significantly raising your personal odds way up from the standard/usual 50/50. Especially if you always place the same side up, flip with same force, at the same height, at the same angle, etc... then you are controlling almost all of the factors that would normally be the reason a coin flip is 50/50.
