I stick the coin to a strip of blue painters tape, slide it in the groove, line up the hole, then fold the tape up over the sides and stick it to the top. Seems to work really good.

Fence Kidd you are a genius . I use a hydraulic press to cut my coins but I have trouble lining up the hole and the marks on the coin . I think this will really help. Thanks again

You can vary the thickness of the washer to change the gap between the plastic guide and the die. If you hit the punch slightly off center the plastic breaks. The plastic guide also does not always accurately line up the punch with the die and you end up hammering steel into steel.

You could also trim or replace the rubber grommets that are between the layers under the hex screw. Thin them down a drop. Instead of pushing and then breaking your set.

How do you round out the edges of clad coins ? I have tried with the quarter rings but no luck using the vise and socket method. I have a 4 inch vise and could not get it to move the coin at all. I want to learn more and more and you are the master teacher ! I believe I have watched every video you have on here. I need an anvil and a larger hammer, the little anvil thingy on the vise is to small. Busted my finger good ! Ouch !!

Being brand new to the hobby, I have two questions fencekid.... 1. Whats the largest ring size you can get out of a Canadian penny without distorting the design? 2. I just ordered a 7 ton press along with this same exact punch kit, am I better off hammering the punch or pressing them with the press?

I suggest a slightly different approach. I use frog tape (any thin tape will do) to position my coin where I want it. Then I fold one end of the tape up on the side of the punch block. I can then use the other free end of the tape to make any additional fine tunings in the coin's position and then I fold the free end of the tape up on the side of the block. This holds the coin in place very well and seems to give a very clean hole.

nice video and good idea but I couldn't help but notice that that large cent looks like it was struck in two places which makes me think it jumped a little bit. Maybe the coin was already damaged before you put it in or something I don't know but that's what it looks like but thanks for the video :-)

Are Canadian coins harder to punch than a US coin, ex. a quarter? I am new to this and found it is taking like 6-7 blows with a big hammer. Any thoughts?

I may have asked this already, so please excuse me if it's your typical repeat. I actually had a problem (like big time) with my punch. OK, I broke it on the 2nd hammer swing. Luckily it was replaced but now I am afraid to try this method again. However, I am not giving up. I purchased a drill press that was taking up space in a friends garage for $20.00. I also purchased titanium drill bits. To me, this seems like the quicker, safer route for me. Safer as in my family jokes that I have "Dougie Moments" & known as "Sir Falls A Lot". In other words, I am the clumsiest person you'll ever meet ! ! So finally, my question is... Do you have a video that shows the use of a drill press in making the center hole. I have looked and couldn't find one that you made. If you have, please share the link. And Thank You immensely for your time & effort in teaching us something new. Dougie

Could you put the coin on a piece of duct tape to hold it in place. Or would the sticky insets hurt rather than help?
@briansimpson6710
@briansimpson6710 9 жыл бұрын
Piece of wide tape works well also. masking tape or cheap duct tape (the high end duct tape is TOO sticky and makes a mess, cheap stuff comes off again easily) place coin on sticky of the tape, drag to position, and lift up to secure it to the die. Tape is also cheap and replaceable at no big loss

Absolutely. I've got the 2 ton press from HF. I have to use 3' cheater extension bar on it, but it works great. Even without annealing.

Hey, I just can't seem to get the punch to go through a US quarter at all, I can just put a dent in it. Is there a solution to this? I'm using a regular hammer. Do you need a special one?
@fencekid
@fencekid 7 жыл бұрын
A heavier hammer will really help. U sure you're using the right side of the punch? Annealing your coin first will soften it up. Make sure yer on a pounding surface that doesn't have any give, like a sidewalk, and last but not least, ya got to hit it pretty hard. Practice makes it look easy. Keep at it

Hey there Fence, I am having a bad time punching holes in foreign coins using the punch and die kit. I've got a centering card that i had a friend of mine make out of aluminum so its durable. my problem is that the punch won't go through the foreign coins. it goes through US coins great but won't go through foreign. Do you have any ideas?

that's what I do put my coin in and tighten the two screws, I use a paper towel to center the coin but I'm sure the leather works better.
