@@-Graham Sugar feeds candida (natural bacteria in the body) candida then overgrows in the mouth, your immune system says; "hey, you're not meant to be here, begone!", candida then breaks down the calcium in your teeth to encase in self and shield itself from your immune system aka when your teeth gets fuzzy (plaque) a few hours after consuming sugars. Candida also effects your circulatory systems pH to supress the immune system and cause you to crave more sugar, and cause fatigue. Artificial sweeteners such as Erythritol doesn't feed candida, and another one is Xylitol which actively removes candida. Reasons why ants don't touch it? it contains no energy / calories / no sustenance.

Amazing to see the different fungal assemblages that developed - and the Coke Zero completely evaporated to yield a dry glass, whereas the original coke didn't, even after three months! Would have also been very interesting to watch what happened after you poured the residual Coke syrup into the Coke Zero glass, and added water, when you let THAT evaporate over a couple months, with the combined non-aqueous components of the two varieties mixed. But still, this was awesome to watch! Thanks!

Kind of surprised the mold took hold in the Zero first. But then it took off in the Coke I guess because it had much more sugar to work with. It would be interesting to do this experiment testing the Ph daily to see how it effected the growth. My theory is that the Zere went flat first and so its acidity dropped to what was tolerable.

The size of the initial mould colony is going to be high variance, as it came from the cup and/or the ice cubes. What section of the freezer the ice cubes were in, or how far to the back of the cupboard the cup came from will make a big difference in how large the initial mould growth is.

@@PhotoOwl food grade clean ice cubes.. well, you used your fingers to put them in. was the cans clean? never have i seen anyone else wipe the top of the can before putting it in ther face.. i trust the glasses were sterile despite not being in an sterile environment. pretty sure i saw flies. and idk if such a level of detail was meant for the timelapse even. just saying. had a good watch. thank you. also, one with real sugar would be nice. though bet it's already out there so how interested am i anyway hehe.. if you are looking to improve production quality these little details are what makes the experience of both creating and watching so much richer. and that is what many "complaining" here is actually saying. this is a tough branch you are in where very high quality is almost always expected. Esp. from one like you who have the appearance of someone who would deliver premium quality. after all you do already deliver quality..
@PhotoOwl
@PhotoOwl Жыл бұрын
@@MalhaIIa yes, I absolutely get what you mean. I could increase the quality of these time lapses by filming them in a sterile environment. I'm working on creating a better place for me to film, right now I'm limited by space, and you know I have to film multiple projects to he able to keep up the weekly uploads. What I meant by the clean I cubes was, they were ice cubes I made at home in my clean freezer by using clean tap water. I could use them in my drinks without any problem. So when I used those ice cubes in the coke, or not wiping the top of the can made very little difference when it comes to contamination, because there are a dozen other projects being filmed just a few feets away, and they are dirty rotting moldy stuff. I'm not complaining, there are many other niches that are much harder to film/create, but time lapses also have their difficulties. For me it's space limitation. Soon I will be able to start filming at a new place with more space. I like the idea of a sterile room for special time lapses, hopefully I can start uploading such videos too soon enough. Thanks for your comment, I appreciate your feedback!

One thing I’ve always wondered about these is what would happen if you just let the mold sit indefinitely. Once all of the moisture dries up and all of the sugar is consumed, the mold would theoretically die, right? And then would it just be dust?
@HansWurst-lg1ws
@HansWurst-lg1ws Жыл бұрын
Basically yes, from dust to dust until the spores find a new habitat to flourish .)
@alicewright4322
@alicewright4322 Жыл бұрын
yes, without moisture the mold cannot defend itself and will be oxidized into oblivion by the sun and the air. but the mold changes color before that: spore release - those spores are often resistant to dessication, and can sit dormant for years, until they land in another glass of pop or other suitable substrate. some molds actively disperse them in the air. the green stuff on the left is clearly mold spores which spread in the air. some mold can just break off fibers that float around without specialized sexual spores. some molds form dessication resistant masses called sclerotia too.

Depends on the species of mold I'd say. I've seen mold growing on window sills and the like. But I guess that can be an area where moisture would condense anyway.

@@tornado100able Not OP, but that should be a non issue. If you have a moldy glass, yes, you should probably intensively clean it, at best with more than 60°C best would be cooking it (so 100+°C) But glass is one of the few materials that are REALLY good at being cleanable, one of the reasons why we use it in the first place. Example: Most of the glassware used in chemistry is made of very similar glass to your regular household glass. There is stuff that does not go well with this in chemistry, but most acids and the like can be handled in your regular old water glass :)

So, mold requires a few things to grow, water warmth, food. On the original Coke I liked how there were at least 2 identified species that developed. What is also interesting is that once the water level dropped so much, mold could not form anymore because there was too little water, too much sugar concentrated. On the other hand, I was not surprised that Coke Zero dried out completely, as there is pretty much nothing but coloured flavored water there. What I find intriguing is what the hell did the mold eat from there? Can it break down artificial sweeteners?

I'd expect there to be very little sugar left in the Coke at that point given the fact there is so much growth. On this, it's very surprising to me given the large difference in nutritional content that the biomass appeared similar. You would expect the one with massive amounts of carbon from sugar to grow more, no? I wonder how so much biomass is forming here in the Coke Zero.

Yeah. At first I though it might be the caramel that supports growth too, but it might just contain caramel coloring (which is different than real caramel). But some molds can me vicious little bastards and can break down a lot of chemicals for nutrition. It would only be molds growing in it, because the pH is too low to support bacteria.
