The way this "Pepsi Challenge" almost always works in Pepsi's favor is that with a quick initial sip, Pepsi tastes sweeter than Coke. So the tastebuds see it as more delectable based on the initial sip

Its not about the sweetness. Pepsi has citric acid and coke doesnt so they taste and feel different. And that'd also make coke taste sweeter. Its not a trick of the mind Its a taste preference. People just don't realize which they like more until they're compared. It's so funny to me tho that Pepsi usually wins these. I always think id like coke more cuz im not a fan of citric acid but yeah i still end up preferring pepsi. Idgaf about the rivalry tho.

That is interesting. Maybe when the citric and phosphoric acid mix it makes the flavor less citrusy than plain phosphoric acid tastes in coke. And they both taste a little like cinnamon because iirc cinnamon is one of the syrup ingredients.

I might be crazy, but I feel like I remember reading somewhere once that Coke was originally meant to be drank at room temp, and Pepsi was made with refrigeration in mind, so refrigerated, a lot of people preferred Pepsi, and at room temp, more people liked Coke. Or something along those lines.

Can't speak for the masses, but did a blind test of milk a while back, I've refused to drink the brand my mom has so I always bring my own when she invites me to dinner, I was certain that I had tried hers and hated it, but in a blind test she made me do I certainly could tell the difference in taste, one was clearly tastier, however it was hers.

no, they are verydifferent. Pepsi is more strong in acid and taste a strong caramel/sugar taste. Cola is more smooth and create a lots more bubble in the mouth. even the smell is different. I drink a lots of Cola, i also drink Pepsi. tasting them blind with only a glass full of each with friends. i could tell the difference very fast and easy. Pepsi is way more better than Cola in term of taste, but it's also very more strong. Cola give the taste of sugar/caramel later after you drink and make tons of bubble. it's easy to get the difference. there is no way you can't. But for someone who doesn't like 99% of aliments on earth, i m not surprised he couldn't. Or he just acting.

I did the Pepsi challenge back in the 80s at a local mall. My best friend & I decided we would do it & make sure we picked Coke just to see what they would say. When they gave us a taste of each the Pepsi was freshly opened and had fizz but the Coke was terribly flat. I stuck with our plan & picked the flat Coke & my friend mistakenly picked Pepsi. I was so upset at her & the Pepsi folks were bad upset with ME!! LOL

Especially from can. Bottle/fountain drink they are closer but can I can taste each one in my head right now. Pepsi has a sweeter kind of flavor. Coke is a bit harsher but I prefer that harsher flavor; it has a bit more, I don't know the best description, "burn" to it I think.

Yeah I strongly dislike Pepsi, no joke. Coke isn't horrible (though it makes my throat constrict the first sip aha) and I can 100% tell the difference. I actually did the same thing with flavored candy. My GF has no sense of smell and therefor cannot taste well. To her, candy just tastes sweet no matter the flavor. So I had her taste some specific candy flavors and she could not tell the difference. I then tasted all of them and could easily tell that they tasted exactly like they were marked. I then tasted the same flavors with my eyes shut not knowing which ones i picked up and I could not tell the difference. So there is first the sense of smell that is part of our taste, but mainly it comes down to our own reality. In part, we create our own reality and it is heavily influenced by other stimuli. Kind of like not knowing you are cut and bleeding until you see it and then it hurts.

i can explain, tyler: coke used to have that "tang", which was sulfuric acid iirc, coke changed the formula to either reduce or replace it, while pepsi kept its acidity, leading me to believe was rebellious towards that change, hence why you thought it was coke, pepsi is what coke USED to taste like, and the nostalgia tricked you

I remember hearing about how coke created a new formula they called it "new coke" and in every blind taste test like 90-95% of coke drinkers preferred it. They replaced coke classic with it and then sales plummeted because no one wanted change basically. Maybe when you can "see it" thats why it tastes better. lol
