Someone probably already mentioned this but the smoke coming out from the front could have been due to the Venturi effect of the fan you were running. It went away after you took it off

any wood stove while burning wood will let out smoke when u open the woodstove door.its nomal. we have been heating woth wood for yrs

If you preheat the flew, it will create a draft and pull the smoke up the chimney. I just roll up a piece of newspaper, light it, and hold it towards the back of the fire box for about 30 seconds.

your fan needs to have cool.airat the back or u will end up with a non wkrking fan..too much heat on the wires and magnetic will damage the fan

To fix the draft, either put a metal mesh screen on top of the pipe, the backdraft was coming from the wind outside, you said the temp was dropping, so it has to be fairly windy.

Most of those fans do have a temp limit, and im pretty sure it's close to 600°

keep the fire going , can you not make a fire and actuallly keep it going without using a blowtorch , and you only need to hit it with blowtorch for couple seconds ? make sure to read all instructions , i notice you do things so weird or improperly
