We're finally engaged, the Chinese way! We had our Chinese engagement or tinghun last February 10, which is also Joni's birthday so it was nice he was able to celebrate it with his parents who flew all the way from Finland.
Although I'm born and raised in The Philippines and I'm a Filipino citizen through and through, I am of Chinese descent, which is why my parents still wanted Joni and I to do a tinghun. We obliged under 1 condition--that we keep the gift-giving to the bare minimum. Nothing extravagant. And definitely not a gazillion items to be exchanged.
For those who don't know, a tinghun is a formal engagement ceremony that sort of makes everything official in the eyes of the Chinese community. This is the start of our union as a couple--when my family gives me away to my groom's family and Joni and I start calling each other's parents and relatives the way the other addresses them. For example, Joni finally calls my dad, "dad" and then I start calling his dad, "dad" as well. The tinghun is full of symbolisms and representations. It's quite interesting really, even for me because I didn't know all these until I actually had to go through it myself!
