As someone who spent his last two years of high school in foster care -- for good, helpful reasons -- I can attest that, even nearly 50 years ago, the foster care system was messed up. As someone who recently trained to become a foster parent, I can also attest that, though the folks running the system mean well and work hard, it's still messed up. It's great to see the passion Sarah feels for what here sister is doing. It's one more reason, as though one was even needed, to love her.

It really must be nice to never have been in the crossfire of her bigotry. Some of us remember her wearing blackface and saying “I’m having minstrel cramps”, and using the c word against Asians, and in general being an open racist but saying she can't be racist because she's liberal. It must be nice to just be able to ignore all that and be like "what a sweetie!"
@peachesandpoets I remember her telling a joke about how she said to her attractive bi racial friend "I'm sure you would have been a really expensive slave!" I'm biracial and I laughed my ass off but it was in the context of a larger bit critiquing white supremacy and her own ignorance as a white woman. A joke can use racialized language, tropes etc and still be funny-- its the spirit in which it is said and the intention behind it. Of course you don't have to like it but she did an amazing series where she tried to help educate people who for example hated presidents Obama"s policiesb Almost everyone in the tire family was benefiting from social security and the affordable care act. You don't have to like her. But I really don't think she's some dyed in the wool racist

I was a foster parent and my wife worked at every level of foster care (worker, state level admin, consultant). It has improved a lot since the days when termination of parental rights was more common. Now the goal is to do everything possible to reunite the family by helping the parents get their act together. The dumb, easy stereotype of “cruel worker arbitrarily removes child” is so destructive and misleading. There’s no easy solution to child neglect and abuse, but the misinformation about what really happens is pervasive.
