certainly Colbert is a better interviewer than Fallon, Kimmel, and Conan. seems like he really cares about the guest expressing themselves rather than trying to make a joke from it
@outlanderfrog
@outlanderfrog 6 жыл бұрын
@@tokenasian1 He sometimes interrupts and moves on while guests are about to, or even in the middle of, saying something that I'm really interested in hearing. Bugs me. The best will always be Johnny Carson, IMO. He knew when to step back and get out of the guests way, and when to help them along.
@Mallen151
@Mallen151 Жыл бұрын
@@tokenasian1 I could be wrong but I get the sense that Colbert is great at talking about things that he’s interested in. That leads to great interviews when he finds something that both he and the guest appreciate. I have also seen guests where he isn’t able to find it which is usually fine but can be awkward. I get the sense that Conan will usually just let the guest talk. If he does chime in, it’s usually to make a quick joke or to call out the guest for being a jerk. I personally think that which one is “better” just depends on your preference! ☺️

Some info with which to ponder and enlighten. There is an excerpt from an article about the musical that beautifully sums up Lin-Manuel Miranda's reasoning behind that inspiration. "But history belongs to those who write it, and with the hit Broadway show Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda is rewriting the Founding Father narrative to purposefully reflect the kind of country we live in today. Choosing to cast the founders of our country as people of color may not be “historically” accurate, but it is culturally accurate as a reflection of a 21st century nation built by immigrants. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s version of history suddenly becomes an inclusive one, inviting every American to see his or herself reflected in the story of the Founding Fathers. "

@paisleigh1989
@paisleigh1989 6 жыл бұрын
@cannotthinkofaname we don't actually see it as that scandalous. Of course it isn't mundane but not that surprising. the reason is because in British pantomine, they overact a lot and the audience comedically goes oooh, its kinda tradition now and that itself is funny to us so i'm guessing we just automaticalluy do it now and it makes us laugh. Also makng fun of the royal family, thats fucking funny to us, we all do it everyday, keeps us thinking they are normal people and so makes what they do normal as well
@prigg88
@prigg88 6 жыл бұрын
@@MC-jr1bs Divorce stats are up here as well but you seem to be implying that divorce means someone cheated on another person, which I would argue isn't necessarily the case. I would disagree that it isn't scandalous. Its something that would get a politician in trouble and would be seen as a scandal. Also in our version of DWTS, Strictly Come Dancing there was furore over one of the contestants simply snogging his dance partner whilst both were in relationships. If we can agree that something is a scandal that is morally wrong. Could we agree that cheating on someone is also morally wrong, regardless of how common it is? Also, I've got the soundtrack and heard it in this video and didn't react even though I'm British so I think part of it as much as anything is to do with in British theatres we play along more, we have more fun in a theatre if we play along in pantomimes as well as other plays and musicals.

"We don't know American history!" True. In a history textbook for a class that I took this past year, it mentioned Hamilton wrote the Reynolds Pamphlet, and I was like "what's that?" and no one knew. A musical taught me more about America than a textbook did. Thank you Lin-Manuel Miranda!

My son has been homeschooled his whole school career. But my mistake is that I went with the charter school’s curriculum out of pressure from the school. With the current affairs of the country and after my son saw Hamilton (thanks to the education program through his amazing charter school’s new principal), I’ve realized how lacking he is in his early American history knowledge. And that changes NOW.

@@RavenclawStudent123 No, it's not and that's important to keep in mind. At the same time we wouldn't be talking about this in the first place if it didn't exist. My general view is that accuracy in historically based works of entertainment is of secondary importance to getting people to talk about that history in the first place. If people just want to learn accurate history then they can go watch documentaries, dang it. And now I hear that theme from that famous Ken Burns documentary playing in my head...

You should check out James Cordon's Broadway carpool karaoke with him. I think that was actually the first thing I watched with him 'speaking' (a tiny bit ) that triggered a marathon KZbin-watch-all-his-interviews stint. And I'm not a huge carpool karaoke fan (I mean, it's cool; but I've only seen a few... I've probably watched that single one more than all others combined!); I'm not really a 'celebrity' person generally, but he just comes across as someone you'd like to know & have great conversations with - anywhere I've seen him speak, from PR hurricane fundraising to actual sit down interviews, he always seems the same. (I've not really seen them all! 😉) I' think I'll now follow him on twitter & hope for some beautiful 'twitter poetry' like that - he even makes friends that way! What amazing departure from 'twitter norm' in every way! As a linguist (& younger than he is), I also appreciate his artistic, somehow soothing vocabulary. I can also assure you I know many young philologists - not a dying breed. ☺ , (And for the love of words, may I recommend Alexander McCall Smith's '44 Scotland Street' & 'The Sunday Philosophy Club'/ Isabel Dalhousie series. He is a man who makes words dance on the page. Also, Jasper Fforde's 'Thursday Nsxt' series - a completely different kind of wordsmith, absolutely in a league of his own.)

What words has he invented
@aeringothyk5445
@aeringothyk5445 6 жыл бұрын
geoff mcclelland Shakespeare didn’t really invent any words. He added unusual prefixes or suffixes to already existing words, or slightly altered existing words. For example, he is credited with Lonely, using -ly instead of -some in the usual lonesome how many would use for heavenly. He mainly did this because ly was often the proper stress for his pentameter scheme, and Un- as a prefix was used by Shakespeare a lot to alter existing words to fit his schemes. But as far as inventing completely unique never before seen words, no. They’re all existing words with a slight twist. Same as a regular joe saying “Yeah the line was slowish.” Not inventing a word, slanging an already existing word.

Honestly... this show is gonna run for an extremely long time. Decades. Will probably be the longest continually running show in Broadway history when all is said and done. I’m in my mid 30s, and if I live a full life into my 80s, it honestly would not shock me if Hamilton is still on Broadway (on its 45th cast but still from its original run) the day I pass.

Just back from the UK. Saw Hamilton in the West End. Yes, it had more humor and the actors (especially the King) played it up for laughs in places the actors didn't when I saw the US tour! It was so fun!

I agree. Saw it last summer in London and the cast was absolutely vibrant and astonishing. I’ve seen it in New York (not with Lin-Maneul,) on tour in Houston, and in London and the London production was my fave and now we have the Disney+ version with original cast. Yea!!!

Part of the reason for that is that you have always heard the same version. but when Lynn hears it he's also trying to sort through all the previous drafts that led up to the final version and is partly trying to remember which version ended up as the final.

"it's canon" 4:03 As a fandom person, I'm pretty sure normal people don't use the word canon to describe things that are true (correct me if I'm wrong), which means that the great Lin-Manuel Miranda is also a fandom person!!

To be honest, I don't know who actually invented the word. I just thought that it was more common to hear it referring to that context in fandom circles? At least, that's the only place I've seen it used that.
@tedwards1025

canon/canonical exists outside of fandoms lol it certainly wasn't invented by them, and I think most people especially like Lin who've studied writing or literature will know the term though they won't use it as much as fandoms tend to

Percival Hans are you trying to insinuate that immigrants are incapable or unskilled people? Of course capability and immigration status are mutually exclusive traits. Capable and skilled immigrants are just as good at getting things done as non-immigrants. There has been this trend of people tying immigrants as "unskilled labor" when that couldn't be further from the truth. Immigrants like Hamilton contributed big time to American history, and OP's statement is a response to that kind of sentiment.

Quick correction: At around 4:51, Lin says that Alexander Hamilton's cousin offered financial assistance to get him to New York, which is partially true. However Lin said the cousin was "Rachel Faucette," which is actually the name of Hamilton's deceased mother. The cousin who helps Alexander was Rachel's niece, Ann Lytton Venton.
@skittlesvampir8400

Thank you, that's been bothering me more than it should. But at that time, Ann was still in her first marriage, so it's just "Ann Lytton".
