John Bonham was (and is) definitely one of the greatest of all time. His talent and art is sorely missed. His untimely death spelled the end of Led Zeppelin; one of the most influential bands of the 20th century. His contribution to that influence can not be overstated.

Bonham once famously said that its not what you put in, but what you leave out. The space between beats is just as important as the beats themselves. Good advice not only for drummers, but any musician.

there is an interesting quote for jimmy that came out after the remastering was done - the studio engineer was doing a play back and noted 'a missed beat' and asked jimmy if they should go back and fix it - jimmys reply was to the effect john left it out for a reason there's nothing to fix

You simply cannot replace a drummer like John Bonham. Losing a drummer of that magnitude is always the hardest for a band like Led Zeppelin to continue. Yes his son, Jason was his flesh in blood, but he can’t replace his dad behind that kit. RIP to a great rock drumming legend.

Bonzo was to rock what Krupa was to jazz, Neil Peart was to rock what Buddy Rich was to jazz. So, take your pick. Jazz was the catalyst. There's been so many incredible drummers. I've loved Bonham since, at 16, "Good Times Bad Times." I got the first record in early 1969. Jimmy Page produced it and, spending most of his previous career as a studio session player, had picked up ideas on things like mic-placement on drums plus very unusual guitar sounds. I remember telling my friends, with that first record, it was suddenly like the drum kit was in the room with you! Live, Bonzo's drums set up a pulse that lasted the night and even for days after. I just knew that he was never boring. I didn't think then that his prowess was to the extent it was. My fave Bonzo solo was "'Moby Dick" at the Royal Albert Hall in 1970. He was just 21.

I agree about Danny, but the difference with bonzo is he only had one kick drum beater. He had legitimately the best right foot and all of rock and roll... And you're right, fool in the rain is the best groove ever... It's hard to compare him to modern drummers because they used two beaters ...

Definitely think Moby Dick and Bonzo’s Montreux are better showcases for Bonham, but he was also amazing on the music where he wasn't the featured band member. Kashmir, Dazed and Confused, When the Levee Breaks, In My Time of Dying, were all amazing tracks with Bonham going nuts behind the others.

Thank you John. If anyone could play drums better that Bonzo, more than 45 YEARS ago, then they would have been the best EVER. Only one bass drum and only a single bass pedal. Just listening to high hat over bass roll demonstrates why he didn't ever need to play double bass. Thank you john for hundreds og hours of personal enjoyment, and encouraging Jason to play too; as well as he does.

people could play better than Bonzo back then. He wasn't loved because he had the most chops/technique....British contemporaries like Ian Paice, Bill Bruford, Mike Giles, Jon Hiseman, Aynsley Dunbar, Robert Wyatt, Mitch Mitchell, Ginger Baker, Tony Newman, Ric Lee and various others were ahead or equal to him in that regard.

Bonzo was definitely one of the best drummers of all time. He's definitely the greatest rock and roll drummers of all time. This is his last public full drum solo that he performed. While this solo is amazing - other notable solos on this tour were May 21st, 1977 at Houston, June 21st and 23rd at the LA Forum. His 1976 drum solo (from the original release of The Song Remains the Same) recorded in late July 1973 is amazeballs. Also, his Royal Albert Hall performance from Jan 9th, 1970, from when he was 21 yrs old - is incredible. ❤ Great reaction -- RIP Bonzo - we still love you and will never forget you ! ❤💔❤️

The intro song, Out On The Tiles , from Zep III is a great song to cover. Bonham does a lot of Joe Morello's grooves. Morello used his hands to solo 20 years before Bonham. From this era ....Carl Palmer , Bonham , Ginger Baker, Kieth Moon , and Ward were all great drummers.

Timpani is the unique sound. John Henry Bonham was my first inspiration on them drums and still my favorite if I can only have one. His style will never get old in my world. Timpani, changing the drum head tension and playing without sticks takes talent and dedication. "Why doesnt Moby Dick have lyrics?" Is the dumbest thing anyone has ever said to me. Try Buddy Rich or Gene Krupa too.

The world kinda shifted for me the first time I heard Led Zepp leaking out of my brothers' room next door. Remember, this was on a table top turn table with big o wires all over to get some sound through what would now seem like terrible speakers. So ridiculous, so audacious, so loud. The imperfection of playing music using a turn table (watch out! you'll make it skip!) was oddly beautiful. It required some work, some intensity, some care of behalf of the listeners. Music took up literal space back then. Worth it.

Saw Zep live in 1979, the year before Bonzo died. Back then, long - very long - solos on drums and guitars were a thing but I find it gets a bit much after a while - too jazzy. But he was a hard living man and one hell of a unique drummer. As far as comparing him to others I've seen play live, only Ginger Baker, who I saw in 1981, and Keith Moon, who I saw in 75, came close. Well, until back in 2017 when I discovered Akane Hirose of the Japanese Hard Rock band Band-Maid. Jimmy Page was so impressed after seeing Akane perform with Band-Maid that he went backstage and asked if he could get a selfie with her! Try Band-Maid's live performance of FREEDOM from their YT channel to see her playing a superb solo.

For another Bonham solo - Moby Dick from the Royal Albert Hall concert. For a sense of his mastery of different grooves - Dazed & Confused, Bron Yr Stomp, When The Levee Breaks, and the remarkable Fool In The Rain. For an utterly incredible modern player, probably the most technically proficient check out Virgil Donati. Warning - As a drummer, watching & hearing Donati play might break your heart. His "Concerto For Drums" is superhuman playing.

They started their 1977 tour, their last US tour ever, on April 1st, 1977 and John Bonham is credited as the first drummer to use electronic treatments on his drums live - by any drummer. It sound pretty cool and it's only used during the tymp part, but my preference is the natural sounds of his tymps from the previous tours - in which there was no electronic treatment "wash out" of his tymps. Zepplin came through Chicago on their first American tour. The background group was Jethro Tull. I was on some very strong acid for the first time and sitting upfront. They played their first album and Jimmy Page's guitar solos live were absolutely incredible. They played until 3am and there were only about 50 people who stayed til the end. And we were shouting for them to keep playing. At the end I was right next to the stage and Robert Plant leaned down and looked right at me and whispered without the mic "We can't give you everything you're looking for." I remember thinking, "Hey wait a minute, I thought rock and roll was forever." I was only 17, needed to mature a bit. My friend invited me to the concert. I had no idea what I was walking into, never even heard of Zepplin but wow, what a memorable experience!

He was absolutely wonderful. I was right up front in a 3 hour show in the mid 70’s. I’ll never forget. Jimmy was wearing a black crushed velvet simultaneous with dragons embroider led on it. More Led Zeppelin. “Babe I’m Gonna Leave you”. “When the Levy Breaks”.

My favorite though is Dave Weckl & before him it was Buddy R .... l followed tens years Chick Corea band, Return to Forever(drummer Lenny White, perfect match in the band's music, in the 1st album Brazilian Airto Moreira & his wife Flora Purim), also Dave Weckl have been playing with Chick C.... another great fusion band I used to listen was Mahavishnu with Billy Cobham. Tony Williams, Jack DeJohnette, & in the Weather Report top native American Alex Acuna (on whose drum clinic I have been in, in part "Winter Sambacarneval". Listen to how fluent the rythm & music & singing plays together a summertime vacation, recreational in which the rythm plays still kind a major part, Weather Report, fex "Corner Pocket"!

I shy away from “best” anything, but definitely unique and innovative. He had his gifts.

He was the "ice breaker" of everything drums in my opinion. His use of triplets in rock gave it that funky feel unlike other bands in the Era. His fills had fills. His intentional off beat moments blended in perfectly. He is the greatest of all time ....there's some great ones out there that kills me not to mention but the title of the greatest has to go to the point man.....JOHN B. GODSPEED

The one I recommend is Moby Dick from The Song Remains the Same. The best is the audio version rather than the video version. It's just waaaay better

This is Led Zeppelin's final North American tour btw. It ended up getting cut short when Robert Plant's son died, and they never had a chance to come back. They also only had 5 days of rehearsal because Robert Plant had laryngitis. The tour included the world record for attendance at an indoor event (Pontiac Silverdome), 6 sold out shows at the MSG, and 6 sold out shows at the LA Forum. That should give you an idea of just how big these guys were near the end.

The 1970 Royal Albert Hall drum solo is extremely unique as well...I would give it a notch or two higher.... it's John Bonham, King of rock drummers !

I believe that sound you’re hearing are kettle drums run through a phaser. That part was used on; “In the Evening” on their 1980 tour.
