5 piece drumset. One kick pedal. 26 inch bass drum, 2 bongos, and a gong. Later a kettle drum. And always played Ludwigs. Saw zep 3 times.John not only played the drums he attacted them like a rabid dog. It was an awe inspiring thing to see and hear. One thing you can say,when John played you knew it was him.

Nice write up - just a few corrections - on Led Zeppelin's first two tours - Bonzo used a Slingerland - w a 22" bass drum and he most likely used the same Slingerland on their first album, bc he used the Slingerland on the Scandinavian tour and on the British tour - after recording Led Zeppelin I -- between Sept 25th and early Oct 1968

The zepp was never jazzy, it was bluesy and rockish but never jazzy. Still, we must remember this was early 70s and jazz was way more attached to pop culture than it is today, so there was a lot of music under that influence

The Snare drum is an aluminum Ludwig Supraphonic 14x6.5 with a Remo Emperor for the batter head. Drum sizes are 26x14 kick, 14x10, 16x16, and 18x16 toms all coated emperors over coated ambassadors.

and...don't forget that the snare also has the 1.5 mil rims. The newer ones have heavier rims and that has a lot to do with the sound. But MOST importantly is that he and his crew knew how to tune them suckers. I have seen many bar star drummers with that kit and it sounds like crap because they don't take the time to learn to tune them properly.

bonham actually used a 14x12 with the maple kit, when he ordered his green sparkle kit he got it with a 14x10 tom and he later switched to a staggering 15x12 😮

More specifically, it is the LM402 Ludwig Supraphonic (Chrome over Aluminum); 14”x6.5” with 42-strand snare wire. He tuned the resonant head higher than the batter head to give it that round full sound (the secret)

Led Zeppelin was my favorite band from my HS years, but it was later that as a guitarist I came to understand what John Bonham brought to the band… perfect expressive power , stamina, he brought it all every time, nothing left on the table …. He could and did do anything he wanted with his set, like jimmy page did with his guitar, and the plant did with his voice, not forgetting the mood and polish / musicality of John Paul Jones….. if you haven’t looked at live stuff you haven’t seen the real thing……

Plant never could sing. Bonham was such an unlearned drummer that he could not play a simple reggae beat. That is how the drumming for D'yer Maker came about. Every true LZ fan knows this story. The live video evidence of Page being a crappy soloist is voluminous. A quick look for bass riffs fails to turn up John Paul Jones: www.thisisdig.com/feature/best-70s-basslines/ A real bassist like Chris Squire shows up though. But you keep alive your torch for 50-year old great-grandpa schlock rock. Led Spinal Tap were quite over the top with their indulgence and a guitarist wearing dorky magic dragon costumes while substituting poseur behavior for actual guitar playing skill.

The gong now lives in Robert Plant's house a few miles away from where I live, in the English Midlands. His son, Jason, has his father's kit, which he plays on Heart's excellent cover of "Stairway to Heaven". Happy to say that he is definitely his father's son, when you see him sat behind a kit.

John "Bonzo" Bonham was a monster. The triplets he runs on that kick drum in the song "Good Times, Bad Times" has always left me astonished. There are lot of great drummers to come out of the late '60s and early '70s. Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, Mitch Mitchell, Bill Ward are just 4 dynamite drummers. There are a lot of talented drummers out there, but not many play from the soul.

John Bonham is truly a mastermind as far as drumming goes, and you're right about his big drums, he used Ludwigs and the sizes were usually (diameter x depth) Kick - 26x14 Toms - 14x10, 16x16, 18x16 He had big cymbals too! I think his ride was a 24", two crashes that were 18" and 22", and 15" hats. Then he had various effect stuff throughout his career but usually always had one of those tambourines on his hi hat stand.

used a 60's Ludwig Supraphonic Snare(chrome over aluminum alloy) with a 42 Strand Snare Wire instead of the standard 20. Said it gave him a "wider sound".

His snare is a 6.5”-14” Ludwig supraphonic (aluminum). He used a coated emperor on top and tuned the bottom high with the snares slightly loose. There are videos on his kit tuning.

Bonham would sometimes his hands and bleed on his drums, when he did the hand solo bit. I'm pretty sure Bonham got the idea from Joe Morello who also played great hand solos! Spot on reaction mate! Yes the beginning was Max Roach's solo. When John was a child his parents listened to a lot of Big Band music [mainly Gene Krupa], & John was influenced by Gene, Roach, and others like Joe Morello, and I'm sure all the other Big Band, Bop, Jazz drummers. Bonham knew how to tune those drums and his sound was the most amazing I've ever heard. That 402 Ludalloy 6.5" x 14" snare is probably the sweetest sounding snare drums ever made, imo. Bonham played them exclusively through the 70's, although there is a picture of him posing with a same size Ludwig Supersensitive [used in classical music//orchestras] snare drum! Cheers! The only issue with the Ludwig Ludalloy 402 snare drums is they will eventually pit, because chrome over aluminum causes a chemical reaction which leads to pitting. Dude, never watched your videos, but the fact that the first things I'm hearing from you are Buddy Rich and Max Roach.... absolutely mad love! Yes, actually a lot of the classic rock period drummers were influenced by jazz. Drums in rock before this tended to be very basic, 4 on the floor kinda beats. Thanks for the awesome vid!

John Bonham’s most recognizable set-up was a glitter green Ludwig 26” X 14” kick, a 16” X 16” floor tom, an 18” X 16” floor tom, a 14” or 15” X 12” mounted tom, and a Suprasonic 402 14” X 6.5” snare, with either Ludwig Silver Dot or Remo Emperor double ply coated heads. Paiste Big Beat and 2002 Series cymbals, 15” Sound Edge high hat, 16” crashes & a 24”ride, a huge gong behind him and a variety of congas, cowbells and other percussion instruments scattered about. Saw them many times in concert and they always made time for John Bonham 's "Moby Dick" set, which lasted at least 15mins or more, enough time to go to the bathroom and find better seats before the song ended, was always a favorite among the fans🤟😜

I love jazz and have favorite drummers but John Bonham is my fave by far. Paying it forward, I suggest, if you haven't checked it out already, Miles Davis Electric Band video 1973 performance in Vienna. Great combination of rock/funk...jazz (Miles hated that word!). Ludwig 400 was John Bomhams snare drum. I'm lucky enough to have one. I love it. Mine is from 1963. Love the vids man 😁👍🏻
