As others have said Sweethearts was an actual cafe/diner situated in Sydney’s red light/seedy district - breakfast would see all manner of characters stumbling in from the night before! This is truly an awesome song. Cold Chisel are just such a great band all round.

Sweethearts used to be a great café in Kings Cross (Sydney). Come sun-up it was often the only place still open other than the 24 hour bookshop a few doors down. I was a chronic insomniac in the 80s and had more than a few breakfasts at Sweethearts after spending a happy hour or two in the bookshop browsing through the bargain Sci Fi bin. Both Sweethearts and the bookstore are long since gone now.

""Sweethearts" was a cafè in the middle of Kings Cross, Sydney, Australia in the 1970s and 1980s, "cramped between strip clubs and sex shops, patronised by the hookers, pimps and drug dealers and the lost and lonely debris of the night," The establishment was very small and run by a Yugoslavian family. "It had the reputation that when Rudolf Nureyev the famous Soviet ballet dance was in Sydney, he would always have his coffee at Sweethearts.There was a beautiful middle-aged woman who used to serve coffee there and never said anything and she was reputed to be the girlfriend of quite a dangerous guy," Hey, Anne-Maria It's always good to see her She don't smile or flirt She just wears that mini-skirt Drunks come in Paper bag, Brandivino Dreams fly away As she pulls another cappuccino. Peace out.

lol, I was bare witness to Don having breakfast at sweethearts. I used to hang out at the Cross at all bizarre hours, and my mates and I once saw him (the bloke from Cold Chisel as we knew him at the time) sitting in the corner reading a newspaper. I saw Chisel play this song around 77 or 78, so by the time it was out, it was pretty old. Kings Cross was a bloody weird place back in the day.

I had breakfast at that very cafe It was quite nice to hear a song on the radio about a place I knew Anne-Maria might have made my cappuccino, but I wouldn't have known Never took note on the names of staff

I've had breakfast at "Sweethearts" many many times! It's not about people coming in the next morning, it's people grabbing breakfast on their way home at 6 a.m. after a night out in Kings Cross in Sydney.

Sweethearts, was a coffee shop, smack in the middle of Kings Cross, Sydney's red light district. 6 O'clock, The nightclubs closed, and the last of the party crowd were coming out into the street looking for a feed. Sweethearts was replaced by a McDonalds, in the 80's. The area a shadow of the vibrant strip it was (for better or worse, as it could be violent and sleezy) with new developments full of, a different class of resident, and trading restrictions on noise and alcohol destroyed the Live music scene. Clubs like, where Cold Chisel used to play.

When in Sydney, after the gig, you'd head into the cross to the Manzil Room, previously Springfield's. After the manzil shut, you'd head to sweetheart's for a meal before hitting the hotel room bed.

Thank you for the reaction, Cold Chisel is an institution in Australia, an extensive portfolio. Jimmy Barnes and Tina Turner performed a duet, "Simply the Best", it is a fun video to watch. Alternatively, you could watch another duet, Jimmy Barnes and John Farnham (the Voice), singing "When something is wrong with my baby". Note, always watch the live performances of John Farnham.

The title track off a great second album, although it was hampered (in my opinion) by a production that felt a little dark or muffled at times. Chisels we’re pretty amazing in how they could be one of the hardest rock bands in the country on one song and then be smooth and jazzy on another. Don Walker wrote most of their songs, especially early on, and although they all contributed in later albums Don typically had the most aptitude for writing lyrics that felt authentic to the working class. He was extremely lucky to have Jimmy and Ian as singers, as they really looked like they could embody those Everyman songs. It was part of why the band was revered by the blue collar crowd.

Sorry to hear about your friend's experience as a waitress. It's a relief when you guys use a video upload I recommend and use the channel name as part of the search. The nzoz1979 upload is the best in town (couldn't help it). Jimmy Barnes did sing the song. Sweethearts was a cafe in Kings Cross. Kings Cross is pretty much the red-light district area of Sydney where bands like Cold Chisel, Dragon, Divinyls, The Cockroaches (who'd later become The Wiggles - yes, the kid's band) and many others would cut their teeth. Songs inspired by Kings Cross include Sharon O'Neill's ''Maxine'' (recommended), Richard Clapton's ''Girls On The Avenue'' (recommended), Midnight Oil's ''Wedding Cake Island'' (wouldn't have expected that!), Paul Kelly - From St Kilda To Kings Cross nzoz1985 (nzoz1985 upload recommended - upload on PK's channel is rubbish), Paul Kelly And The Coloured Girls - Darling It Hurts nzoz1986 (recommended)... I'm sure Divinyls ''Elsie'' (recommended) and some Dragon songs would have also been inspired by Kigns Cross. The music videos that feature scenes of Kings Cross are Maxine, The Numbers - The Modern Song nzoz1980 (recommended) and Cold Chisel - Saturday Night - 1984 austech (austech's upload is the only decent upload). Being a Sydney guy and having a dad that lived in and out of the Cross I got to become pretty familiar with the area as a kid. There was always something in the air. I worked at Kings Cross for 18 months a few years ago and it was one of the best experiences I had in my life. I'm getting flashbacks now. Sadly, the coucil has been working at gentrifying the place and the efforts have worked. The spirit of the place is almost gone. Thanks for viewing the nzoz upload of the song.

I lived in Potts Point which is right next to Kings Cross. It wasn't as expensive in the 70's as it is today. Although I ate at Sweethearts as a kid I didn't have the fortune to work there. Instead I worked at the McDonald's that had replaced Sweethearts in the early 80's. Try being a teenager in 1982, and having to serve McDonalds garbage to drunks, junkies, druggy hookers, pimps, yobos, troubled teenagers and angry-drunk Aboriginals. I'm sure some of those charming people were underworld criminal figures that are now immortalised on Underbelly. Check out Cold Chisel's ''Saturday Night'' video.. you'll see the Cross in its full glory. It was shot a couple of years after I worked at Macca's.. yuk!

Just one comment. We don't tip in Australia because the waitresses are paid a proper wage. So she doesn't have to wear a short skirt for that reason.

I saw Chisel live a few times because mates dragged me to their gigs. I was more interested in their opening acts. INXS and Beargaren (The Ears). First time I was introduced to Cold Chisel was when I was in the Countdown studios seeing them perform Goodbye (Astrid Goodbye) circa 1978. I also saw them perform ''Shipping Steel'', ''Choir Girl'' and ''My Baby'' on the show. I wasn't at the shooting of this ''Breakfast At Sweethearts'' clip. However, 3:58 was used as part of a montage of the show on Countdown's opening title sequence along with images of Kiss, Cheap Trick, Mi-Sex, Jo Jo Zep, Michael Jackson and The Angels. Sorry to say it Chisel fans, but as a devoted Countdown kid I saw Cold Chisel as an opportunity to either run to the bathroom or make myself vegemite on toast and a glass of Milo. Their songs were often long enough for me to quickly get my essential snack and get back to the TV to view a more bouncy and poppy act like Split Enz or The Reels.

Just responding to your comment about a waitress get her butt grabbed. This cafe called Sweethearts was in Sydney’s red light district, sure it had strip joints and drug dealing but it also had a grungy artistic side, with smoke filled music places and nightclubs, artists and other creatives. It was very much run by underworld figures, and I guarantee you if any grabbed a waitress’s butt they would’ve had there face smashed and thrown out on the streets. It was a tough place you didn’t want to act like a jerk.

Great song. About a famous diner in Sydney I think. Just so you know, waitresses in Australia don't have to rely on tips, we have the highest minimum wage in the world. If someone tips a server in Australia it is because they want to.
@hanierfamily
@hanierfamily Жыл бұрын
It's better here than in the States. In Ontario, though, wait staff get a small percentage less than minimum wage, and I think they have to include their tips in their taxes. That ain't right.
