Short comment on a young Yuzu, I made the beginners mistake of putting a really young Yuzu outside into the ground, it also was in combination with the worst winter we had in years with 2 weeks of -10c. The problem was not the temperatures in january, but in march everything became warm the yuzu started to get into gear and then frost hit again in April with -7c that was the end of the yuzu. There was a combination of two things a) The yuzu was too young its stem was not really developed to resist such temperatures and I did not pack it in either b) The late frost is worse than the winter frost, because as as soon as the pant pulls water and late frost is coming in the frost kills the plant. I really could see once the late frost was gone how the yuzu was dying down! I will retry the experiment in a few years, given I already was able to bring a citrumelo through winter (bigger plant but packed in without heating) but also we did not reach -10c ever this winter, but -7c for 10 -15 consecurtive nights was the worst we had.

Btw. not sure if you are aware of it, but most likely you are, given your excellent expertise, the most interesting variety for countries north of the Alps very likely is the Citsuma Praque, which is a Chimera with one half Trifoliata in it and one half a Mandarin variety, it actually produces edible fruits which accordingly to reports taste like Satsuma and occasionally a trifoliate orange in between. Have been searching for weeks for this plant, but it seems to be either out of stock all over Europe or not shippable to Austria. This seems also to be one of the cold hardiest ones! (not the same as a Trifoliata but not so far off either)

Can you tell us something about the "citrus reticulata"(I guess it is the "standard" mandarine), the "citrus japonica" (kumquat) and the "citrus sinensis"? I live near Rome and I'm trying to understand if I can leave them outside without protection next winter...

Mandarins in general , but also kumquat and especially Citrus sinensis tend to resist to cold temperatures. They usually don't have any problems if it goes below 0, even if it goes -3/-4. If it goes below -4/-5 they can drop some leaves, but it's not the end of the World, they would probably grow new leaves during Spring.

I live in Poland and I would like to know what characteristic traits could be good to survive in cold climate .I see that Poncirius has small leaves so probably it is not costly to lose it in spring frost when the frost will come too early .What about fruit ripening characteristic.For example same apples are better after frost to reduce sour taste .Do their leaves are getting yellow naturally in Autumn or it will be killed by frost ? Poncirius Trifoliata can survive up to -27 C ,Yuzu probably under -20 C ,but plants must be strong and older.

I managed to put into the ground in January (10th January), and winter, this year, Thomasville, US. 119, and Citrumelo. I live near Wrocław. No protection on the plants.
