cold starting our 4230 john deere after I forgot to plug it in the day before it was about 13 degrees out at the time these 30 series john deeres were notorious for being shitty pigs when it comes to cold starting

the 2955 was produced from 87-92 was rated at 97 hp and used the gen III 5.9L whereas the 4230 replaced the 4020 was produced from 73-77 rated @ 100 horse and used the Gen II 6.6 liter... other than the appearance and power ratings these were two completely different animals and the 30 series tractors are notorious for terrible cold starting... but on the other hand check out my 2240 cold start youll like that one... and dont forget to subscribe cause theres more to come

As a former John Deere Area Service Manager may I offer some suggestions: There is a metering attachment that SHOULD be on the tractor to meter starting fluid into the intake manifold. Injecting either directly into the intake manifold as shown in the video can do damage to the pistons. Also there is a block heater that will keep the anti-freeze warm and help in cold weather starting.

No ours is a 4 cylinder turbo rated at 82 HP with a JD 175 Loader and SG2 cab. I Love John Deere's it's the first tractor i drove when i started my job as a farm worker and it's always been my favourite and it's never let me down.
@wagner5927015 жыл бұрын
it actually helps the block heater hold in quite a bit of heat... helps quite a bit more than a person would expect... also helps it warm up a little faster

we used to have two cylinder JDs and 2 of them were started using a big wheel on the side...ah, the good old days :)

Never ceases to amaze me how some young men think it's important to advertise how they can start a engine that they failed to plug in or park inside in the warm. And it always seems like it's an older tractor that there grandfather or father worked hard to pay for. Comments like" low compression" and "hard starting" are usually the end result of too many " cold starts. I have several of these old 30 series and they start very easy after they are plugged in for several hours. Also, keeping the fuel level in the fuel tank above the height of the injection pump helps too. Shooting ether in a cranking engine is the safest way, if it must be done.
@patwayzip15 жыл бұрын
I used to have a 4230 that was cold natured as well. Try leaving ur throttle all the way back, on a cold start, especially if you use starting fluid. You dont want to throw a rod. Also when cranking, turn your steering wheel back and forth, it will take pressure off the hydrallic pump and help it start.

our good loader tractor is a 1964 4020 with a excel cab and a DU-AL 345 loader, one nice about owning a DU-AL loader is you,re never short of empty 5 gallon buckets

Was there diesel in a red can? I LOVE diesel power. No glow plugs on that baby? That would be a hard start! Suggestion; have someone shoot the ether while you are cranking the engine, it will pull it in as a fine mist and should start on first try before battery is getting low. My Jeep Liberty is diesel with glow plugs and it has started after sitting outside all night in 0 degree weather. Synthetic oil is required by manufacturer and may help your big, bad Johnny. Diesel, nothing like it.

The 4230 cold start reminds me of mine .. Not a real good candidate for cold starts . My 4020 will out start it anytime , But still a great tractor .. Love it ..

I was LMAO! at this,reminds me of 35 years ago when we had our 4230,I remember my Old Man gettin so pissed at it that he would actually build a fire underneath the oil pan,worked everytime!I enjoyed your vids,keep em coming.I use to do some stuff in the 4230,but thats a WHOLE nother story.The 4230 is really 102 H.P.,not that it matters tho.I knew that damn thing was addicted to eaither the 1st 4 cranks.Ours had a loader on it too,never broke no bolts though.
@wagner5927015 жыл бұрын
with a cold diesel it is the recomended starting procedure to throttle it all the way up so you get as much fuel into the cylinder as possible
@CrazyCanuck9115 жыл бұрын
AMEN TO THAT! my neighbor has a IH 684 ....wow you give it a shot of ether and one or two cranks and your in buisness.....awesome tractor..drove it myself a few times
@dalekrueger15 жыл бұрын
the starter im talking about is a perminent magnet starter, like they use on the new tractors, the30 series orgionally used a delco remy, but ours and most other 30 series had them replaced with a nippondesno starter, looks like a delco but bigger and a little longer,but they now have the perment magnet gear reduction starter avalable now, best thing is go talk to the john deere dealer
@marckus1914 жыл бұрын
another trick to starting a cold diesel is to cut your fuel, and turn it over a few times. let it sit for a minute and repeat. The compressed air is hot and warms up your sleeves. then through the fuel in and its warm enough to ignite. ether still works better though :)
@osi248411 ай бұрын
I read in the owners manual that Plug in is a 2 to 4 hour process, not over night. Other wise some damage may occur
@wagner5927015 жыл бұрын
no its not... as I mentioned several times before and as anyone who has owned a 30 series deere from the 70s will tell you these tractors are just terrible to start in anything below 40 degrees or so
@wagner5927014 жыл бұрын
@willyford no I didnt blow it this winter or last winter or the winter before that and Im most likely not going to blow it next winter either, and as far as your "theory" goes it hasnt needed a lick of ether since about september so not quite sure where you come up with the its going to need more and more thing, furthermore maybe youd like to give me some great ideas on how to get it started since you know so much about this tractor or the 30 series in general
@MrLuckytrucker219 жыл бұрын
so were the 40 series, our old 4640 always needed a little starting fluid even in mild cold temps, but still was a great tractor.
@wagner5927015 жыл бұрын
yeah Im still running two 6 volts in series I hadnt even thought of trying the 12 volts so thanks for that... we do have the upgrade starter on it though

yeah, this particular 4230 didnt come equipped with glow plugs...doesnt even have an ether injection port... which kinda sucks
@wagner5927014 жыл бұрын
@brian93ist yes I will agree with that but I had forgotten to plug it in the night before and didnt have time to wait for it so I had to do what I had to do

@willyford oh and by the way this tractor is natural aspirated, it has no turbo

We have a 2955 and ive started it as low as -5 without plugging it in or either no problem. I think the engines are similar. They are around the same horse power.
@Stetsonater14 жыл бұрын
Plug in a Grid Heater the 30 series had to have those because they normally take forever to start......but if you plug it in it will warm the block up to the point where it will fire right up

I have a 4230... Why on earth would you start it dead cold with throttle wide open?...bad idea. And i never move mine till it warma uo and the hydro oil is warmer and the seals warm up. Cold oil going through cold o rings you start having leaks

@wagner5927015 жыл бұрын
yeah every 30 series JD Ive ever come across has been a pain in the ass to start cold If I dont pug ours in at anything below about 40 I have to use ether and hope for alot of luck
@wagner5927015 жыл бұрын
no Im not disagreeing with you on that note the 30 series JD didnt start for squat at anything below 40F I dont give two hoots about what jack smack says about his 4230 starting at -70F just didnt happen (and if it did lets see a video lol)... as far as the color of tractor it all comes down to comfort with the controls and presonal preference and I just tend to lean a little more to the JDs cause thats what Ive been exposed to

Our tractor we had a hard time trying to get it started. It finally starts and runs for two minutes and then runs out of diesel. After that it was even harder to start it.

this tractor did not come equipped with a grid heater
@wagner5927015 жыл бұрын
there is no other way to start this tractor the 30 series tractors were notoriously hard to start in the cold... if too much ether is used then yes major damage can be done but used in moderation it makes an excellent starting aid for some diesel vehicles... if it wasnt intended to be used then why did john deere put ether injection ports on some tractors
@mchl815 жыл бұрын
im reading up on other comments posted. very well. if you use eiither all you need is a sniff while its being turned. it may cause a head gasket to blow.

no offense taken dude, and i realize that I did shoot in quite a bit but believe it or not thats actually what this tractor takes to wake it up, as much as I hate to do it, I think the previous owner must have shot it with a crap load of ether cause its been like that since the day we bought it, theres been 50-60 degree days where it wouldnt start without the go go juice
@wagner5927014 жыл бұрын
@TheWackerfaxes no glow plugs or grid heater on this beast
