That 720 started good for sitting in the cold. Just a few tips. I'm glad you know to warm the pony before cranking. Just have to be careful as the pony motors can be as expensive to fix as the whole rest of the tractor. When its decompressed you should let it crank a little bit more. The idea of decompressing it is to give it oil pressure as it cranks, so let it build some oil pressure before giving it compression. And I think you already know this but don't move the diesel throttle at ALL before cranking or while cranking decompressed because it will hydrolock and flood the diesel. Only move the throttle once you're cranking with compression and oil pressure.

im with you Wes, I don't understand the fascination people have with these cold starts, they are hard on engine, cause un-needed amounts of engine wear, and really aren't needed. Either plug the block heater in, keep it in a heated building, of give it some crack and get the thing running.

It seems like 90 percent of your equipment including the collector items are ready to crank at moments notice I cant imagine keeping hot batteries in all those tractors and the tires holding air. Props to you sir!

Well I didn't know any John Deere's had a pony motor start system. It is tough on engines and batteries to cold start in temperatures as cold as that. I'm a bit surprised you didn't let them warm up more before switching them off if only to help recharge the battery for next time.

Because ether burns so hot, I was told that on Class 8 tractor engines, you weaken the piston rings and put pits in the pistons and the engine needs more ether each time you start the engine. It essentially becomes addicted to ether.

they also start a lot easier with a block heater to warm the coolant, even better with heater in oil pan. easier to crank and engine thinks it's a warm day. also easier on bearings as oil is not as thick and flows quicker

Wes i just don't get what all the exitement is on cold starts! I would much rather see a piece of equipment putting in a days work. I would rather watch it doing what it was made for rather than just blowing cold smoke. Now watching a tractor work its ass off pulling an implement, thats fun.

Hey i saw the harvester and i wanted to tell you something. My family owns a harvester from the 1930s, i dont know the brand or any numbers because its just came off from age. Ill see if i can find out anytime soon and inform you. Along with the harvester, we have a 1010 with a kelley loader, two other ones i dont even know, there around 40s to 60s, no numbers, a model H (doesnt work and its cheaper to buy a better tractor than to fix it) a 4020 and a 5020. Also a 1948 ford 8N

you can hear the pony motor slow down as the big motor passes the compression stroke. the pony motor preheats and starts.

The pony motor also warms the main engine coolant if you keep it running long enough.

Yes, they scream. I've read (but don't know for sure) that the idle on them is 4000 RPM. There are plenty of other JD, 2 cylinder, pony motor starts on KZbin. They all scream.
@wildcoyote34
@wildcoyote34 10 жыл бұрын
45Deere9500 ,, the pony engine on a deer screams at 4000+ rpms when cranking but the idle is about half that ,,,I have 2 of them and they smoke to beat hell ,, that pony engine is a bitch to fix if it breaks too ,,most guys with them opt for a electric start conversion instead of replacing/rebuilding a pony engine
