No glow plugs on John deere. The 466 deere engine is direct injected, no pre combustion chamber. No intake heater either. They came factory equipped with ether injection. Used sparingly, no harm is done. I worked at a John deere dealer for several years as a mechanic and worked on 4020's through the big dog 4960's.

I once heard a theory of crank so long wait let you're heads warm through crank again repeat until started. The theory being as you crank it's partially burning fuel and creating heat just need t let it warm up through the heads then she will go

I have read the reason ether isn't too good is because it wears out the top ring on the piston.

@micarone4 ай бұрын
Did you mean that the tractor should be kept in the shed? If so, I don't think that it would've made any difference, because I doubt that shed has any kind of heating or insulation, so it's basically as cold at inside as it's at outside, whatsoever.

@TheRealJesseStoltzfus2 жыл бұрын
You’ve clearly never been around these engines. They’re designed to have some ether used in cold climates, even came with a direct injection. Deere wouldn’t have done it if it wasn’t any good. Just no need to blow a half a can of snort into just because.

@strawberryroan19415 жыл бұрын
Dave Hodges Ether will not ruin an old Deere, unless you are an absolute fool when you use it. We have a 1973 John Deere 4630, my dad bought it in 1988, and it has always needed a shot of ether to start, even on a hot day. But once it fires up it runs the best of any of our tractors. It has 11,000 hours and has had no engine trouble yet. If ether is so bad for an engine, I wonder why John Deere, International, and Case, all put a button in the tractor to give it a shot of ether from the luxury of inside the cab. But I agree, putting the tractor in the shed and plugging it in is a good idea.
