43071 one of our regular visitors to the Oak (Old Oak Common) Depot prior to the Depot closing. Driving these power cars, and/or associated sets around the Depot was always a pleasure since several of us techs were trained and licenced to move our trains, on depot, when we were either short of shed drivers or, more often, a hell of a lot of shunts/movements needed carrying out.

She was on the GWM for some time before she retired, definitely one if the most well traveled one as it’s worked on the ECML, XC and Midland sections as well as the Great Western! Sounds like an honour to have drove these fine machines when they were in service even if it was in a depot, sounds like a busy procedure but must have been great!
@AndreiTupolev2 жыл бұрын
You really might think that for engines that were installed at the same time as the MTUs, Paxman might have managed to produce something that started much better from cold and produced rather less clag, wouldn't you. It's not really a noticeable advance on the Valenta (though it sounds very like it, which is a point in its favour)
@BOBPTransportVideos2 жыл бұрын
It is certainly a strange one, in service it was not to bad for the VP185 as the engine block would retain some heat after being switched off. However starting them from cold it creates a bit of a problem. In the future we plan to fit a Pre Heater to our VP185s to reduce engine wear on cold starts which will increase the life span of the engine. The MTU fires up with no drama at all! Very solid engines with hardly any emissions. The MTU in 43071 is in very good condition considering it has been stored away and switched off for ages! and when we started it for the first time threw up no faults at all. Thank you for watching the video!
@jerryhill75082 жыл бұрын
I would be interested to see if the MTU can start without heating up to near running temperature, I imagine if it can it will also produce clouds of in burnt fuel in the process of run up!
@Martindyna2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. The VP185 was however an improvement on Valenta regarding fuel economy, lubrication oil & Diesel black smoke emissions and they were about one Tonne lighter each engine, if I remember correctly. Having watched a number of XPT videos the lack of blue smoke is particularly evident. Unfortunately as the engines aged they did start to produce black smoke but oil control was still good.
@BOBPTransportVideos2 жыл бұрын
@@jerryhill7508 We don’t have any plans to start 43071 without the pre heater as yet. The preheater saves us a lot of grief when it comes to mechanics, but if it happens one day I will be sure to capture it on video would be interesting to see!
@BOBPTransportVideos2 жыл бұрын
@@Martindyna Indeed the VP185 had a few problems when they entered service but they have proved themselves over the years to be more efficient than their predecessor, a key engine in the history of the HST and we’re glad to have them preserved and in working order!

Awesome video! How long does it take to heat up the block on average, before firing up?

May I ask what the deal is with the EMR branded 125 please?. I thought that all the valentas had been removed so why does this 125 still have one?. Was this reinstated after preservation or did EMR not bother upgrading their HST's?. Just curious as the Scotrail (ex GWR) units are loud and smokey but nothing like this! Lol.
