That sidearm rig is slicker than snot. I've got something similar to pull dual hay rakes, but of course it's built about 1/5 as stout as that... and no PTO of course. Doesn't take a lot of iron to pull a ground-drive 9.5 foot hay rake LOL:) That thing is good keeps the tractor up on the road on firm ground while the shredder is out in the mudholes cutting-- bet ol' Rockin' Robbie coulda used that thing earlier in the summer when he buried that tractor out cutting roadsides or rights-of-way. Tell your Dad not to run that Shulte batwing mower over any gas pipelines... Couple guys on my brother's old crew at the county did that-- one guy was running the 15 footer just like that behind a little Deere cabbed MFWD (90 horse maybe? not a big frame tractor) and went "thump, thump" and figured it was a log that floated down the creekbanks they were mowing, happens all the time and he couldn't see it in the grass-- NOPE it was a 12 inch high pressure gas pipeline and the Schulte shredder blades chopped a nice half-moon slice through it... When it blew out it RIPPED that Schulte batwing right off the back of that Deere tractor and sent it flying like a leaf in a hurricane... it came down hard about maybe 15 yards or so away, and it basically totaled it when it came down-- turned the deck and wings into taco shells and twisted them fancy walking tandem wheels and lift arms back there into pretzels. I think they managed to salvage most (not all) of the airplane tires off it and maybe ONE gearbox-- everything else was scrap iron! Blew every window out of the Deere tractor cab and pelted the operator with balls of mud and rocks, pretty bashed and bruised and some cuts... Another guy was on an open-station slope mower (with the telescoping pole with a 4 foot hydraulic drive mower hanging off the end for cutting out over water, reaching over fences, haggling off overhanging tree limbs, etc.) and while he had a gravel screen cage on 3 sides, he still got pelted with rocks and mudballs and was pretty bunged up too. Luckily for them it didn't IGNITE the gas because it if had there wouldn't have been enough of them left to bury... They spent the night in the hospital for gas exposure and that was it. Course the pipeline company tried to pass it off on the county, even threatening to sue them for damages to the pipeline and lost money from the interrupted flow caused by the shutdown for repairs. One of the bosses went out as soon as the first responders and investigators were done and found their "pipeline ROW" signs were laying flat on the ground, and had been that way for some time, as when he flipped it over writing-side-up, the fire ants had built their mound over it and there were "ant tracks" (like an ant farm) on the down facing side of it... He took pics of everything. How a pipeline that's SUPPOSED to be 10 feet deep in the ground ended up HALF STICKING UP OUT OF THE GROUND without the pipeline company fixing it is another story, and clearly put them at fault... Later! OL J R : )
