Cold Steel American Lawman edge retention testing XHP vs S35VN. Is there a noticeable difference between the two? Which is your favorite? Thanks to Tim Gannon for the S35VN loaner to make this test happen.

This is literally taking my thoughts and putting it into a test. I just did the code 4 s35vn overview and filmed my lawman xhp video yesterday or the day before and was wondering the difference. I prefer xhp but it’s awesome you put it into a video!

XHP is one of my favorites, it just comes back over and over on a strop. I should have put this up sooner. I enjoyed doing this one to see just how much of a difference there was.

Outpost 76 xhp is an underrated steel. It definitely does strop back as well as just about any steel. I’d take xhp over s35 every day of the week.

I love the XHPs, in fact most of my cold steel folders are CTS XHP with one Recon 1 half serrated Tanto point signed by Lynn Thompson on the box himself as the blade never state CTS XHP 😊

I would say 99.9% of reputably produced knives have a 99.9% chance of not closing on your hand. The triad lock bumps it up to 99.99% and that extra .09% certainly justifies the clunkiness

Had an XHP Lawman in FDE and sold it like a fool. Missed it enough that I bought another Lawman in S35 and while I don’t hate it, it does feel kind of like a different knife in use. I think given the steel they have to work with now that Cold Steel has done about the best that can be done with it, so I’m pretty satisfied for 90 bucks.

Hey Gerald, another awesome knife vid. I carried the American Lawman in CTX-XHP for the last 3 years or so. Other supposed super steels just haven't lasted as long or been as easy to maintain. Plus, I really liked the ergos on the Lawman and became a front finger choil fan. I was happily going through life EDCing my Lawman, an old Ontario 1 Aus 8 beater (which is way better than many think) in the shop that everyone uses. Then I saw a test you did on the Spyderco Manix in 52100. So I picked one up .... like the ergos and blade shape a bit more on the Manix. That being said, if Spyderco drops a new Sprint Manix in XHP I am all over that. Love XHP and 52100, both strop back to sharp a long time and then sharpen easily when needed. I can't say s35vn thrills me ....... Thanks again Gman !!!

Nice testing. Not sure it would matter to the results, but your XHP Lawman is hollow ground while the S35vn is flat ground.

@@Outpost_76 I've talked myself out of a Domino a few times. It looks like a really solid knife. Framelock flippers just aren't my preference so that plus the price point has kept me from pulling the trigger on one. I think the hollow grind is more important than the steel. I still like my old aus8a Lawman with that deep hollow grind, back when they sharpend it all the way to the choil. It's so thin and stays thin when you sharpen it, and the thick handle just enables so much power behind that thin edge.

@@EDCandLace I agree, just wish they didn't do that early plunge grind with a quarter inch unsharpened section. Still a great knife just waisted blade. They used to have a great sharpening choil on really early aus8 models but switched soon after. I have a s35vn flat grind that's thick bte but I like the full edge on it

@vamheredur413
@vamheredur413 3 жыл бұрын
@@zdrahar8977 I have a very small collection, but I've seen from videos that AUS8 doesn't hold an edge for very long, but is REALLY easy to sharpen. People generally avoid it since it's a budget steel and they want the steels with the most edge retention, but it's not a terrible steel. Cold Steel XHP knifes are good, but there was a video on KZbin (I think the channel was called Yeti2, it was in Russian) where they tested S35VN and XHP and the XHP chipped in a lot of places whereas the S35VN was close to perfect. In my opinion the S35VN is the better option because of its slight increase in toughness, but it all depends on the usage of the user. :) Greetings from Bulgaria. ☦️
