I've watched a lot of reviews of this sword/machete and this is the best, most honest, clear and down to earth review I've seen to date. Good job!

I've been looking at this as well as other Cold Steel machetes (swords). Cold Steel makes a buckler (small 🛡) that would pair nicely with the Gladius. I already own the Kershaw Camp 14, so I'm having trouble justifying the purchase of the Gladius. I love the double edged factor, but don't know if it's as tough as my Camp 14? Any thoughts? This is for my non-firearm home defense option btw.

Traditionally Roman soldiers wore the gladius from a belt loop on the strong hand/right it was not worn as a cross-draw like most swords. The shortness made that possible also, the Roman soldier carried a heavy shield on their left which made drawing the sword from the right side more practical. The soldier was trained exhaustively to fight with this particular style. The Gladius was primarily a thrusting sword, not designed to be as efficient at chopping.

Richard Kersey That’s all very interesting, but this is a machete designed to be a chopper and belt carry with this sheath sucks. I strap it to my back when I carry it because it’s more comfortable plus then I can still carry a knife as well. Thanks for the history though.

Modify the scabbard to wear it diagonally like a 45 degree. The “ball” is great. It’s helpful. I re-ground the edge at 17 degree to make it even sharper. I like mine a lot. Steel is fine for the price point.
@armorvestrus41194 жыл бұрын
As a sword your in business, and yes the tip should not have bent so easy but just widen the tip a little and it will go right through the aluminum. Remember swords were meant to cut meat not metal.
@rooroo92166 жыл бұрын
It's very rare I see a video with something I actually have!! I do have one of those but never take it outside, it's more of a collection piece (same with other stuff). Although I don't collect as much as I used to, I still like looking at stuff like this or watching videos about interesting swords or similar stuff. Everything you said about it is pretty much the same with mine (I won't go stabbing aluminium with mine now though.....not that I had that in mind). The edge is sharp/ish but I need to work on it to make it sharper, the handle is built like a tank and the steel is pretty hard too (besides the tip, but it can be fixed). I've not tried, nor have I needed the belt loop, but it's still there anyway, it could even serve as one sling attachment loop. Mine doesn't have the "made in Africa" engraving though, and I did attach a lanyard just for the hell of it. Have you ever seen some of the cold steel adverts? Some of them are hilarious!! xD You should also check out Skallagrims channel if you like swords btw, he trains in HEMA so actually knows how to use the stuff too! Anyway cheers again (Ryan was it??) :D
@ThatWhiteCat9206 жыл бұрын
Rooroo92 With mine I removed the black finish, added a twine wrap on the handle and redid the edge. Now it’s more like a sword and it’s sharp! I also fixed the tip and improved it and I’m about to weave a back strap out of paracord. You may not use it much, but take it out from time to time and pretend lol! It’s just fun to play with as long as you’re safe with it. And yes I have seen Cold Steels videos. They are pretty hilarious, but at least they show some testing no matter how silly it is. Most other companies won’t dare do that stuff. Also yes my name is Ryan. I’m glad someone finally remembered it! lol
@rooroo92166 жыл бұрын
I thought I saw someone else say Ryan, so I figured I was right (usually I'm dreadful with names).. That sounds great the work you've done to your one, it'll be interesting to see once you've finished with it!! Yeah I do admire my one now and then, whether or not I'll ever remove the black finish, I'm not sure about yet. Cold Steel are great for testing their products, I really like the ones where they test with the ballistic gel torsos, or the slabs of meat, but the durability tests are also interesting to see too. Rofl I saw one the other day where a guy had 2 swords and he turned into some kind of ballet ninja, and started spinning around with them xD!!

@@ThatWhiteCat920 Ridiculously strict but not consistent, i can own a Gladius Machete no problem as well as a soviet PTRD anti-tank rifle on my normal AB gun license, but its illegal for me to even touch a semi-automatic .22LR bunny-rifle. apparently those bunny-guns are deadly, but knocking out armored trucks off the gun shop racks are fine.

@@MaximilianEnVT wow that's crazy! I'm glad I live in America. I shoot guns in my yard and nobody cares. I carry machetes like this one down the road and it's fine. Fat Horse Productions ok cool. It's because I heard on a video that they improved on the tip. Or they put a better bevel edge. What's impressive is how fast you chopped that piece of wood.

You can use your fists and feet but even then if it is deemed to be excessive you may end up on the wrong side of the law. @@ThatWhiteCat920 thx for your reply - seems that only the gladius version has poor quality... Ist not just the grind, it's totally asymmetrical... You'd have to do a full reshaping to get the left and right side matching... I'm just disappointed... Read so many good things and now received this "elementary school project"... And just for information, where I'm from, the thing costs 55€ which is like 60 bucks... For 45€ I can get the united cutlery gladius which is 1060 steel and waaaay better built overall....
