Ok my friends….here is a low cost alternative to a functional sword. I know it is technically a machete but I think it offers some nice things to help with learning how to cut.
Find it here:

The thai daab usually has a long handle like the one you have. Some also have small guards like the cold steel one but its not the usual. When it come to indexing with a round handle, you just have to train with it until you get used to it. Cheers. Where my fellow dual weilders/krabi krabongers at??!!!!

Great video as usual. Just a friendly FYI, there are definitely two-handed dha/darb. They're much rarer than one-handed versions, but they do exist historically. Also, I totally agree with what you said about cutting being weird/difficult with swords of those proportions. I've cut with a smattering of swords that have unusually long hilts and short blades relative to hilt length, and they're much different beasts than cutting with short-hilted, long-bladed swords. Anyway, keep up the good work. Love your channel. :)

Cheap blades are so underrated. Idk if it's just snobbery or if we (sword collectors) just feel the need to dismiss them as crap to justify spending 1000$ on something "legit". Cheap blades like this are awesome. Coldsteel has a bunch of models like this one that perform really well and are very, very cheap. Beginners and seasoned collectors alike should all own something like this. Because it's fun to just go wild once in awhile to "get the stupid out" without ruining a 1000$ sword lol. Ya know? Great video🤘and a genuine service to the community ya did here. You don't have spend a lot of money to have fun backyard cutting. My first "sword" was a 20$ scimitar machete thingy I got at Canadian tire. My latest purchase was a hanwei raptor nanbokucho. Obviously my raptor is better in every way but that cheap little sword wannabe still makes me smile every time I get a standing cut with it I think to myself..."20$"! And hold it out in front of myself and look at it all smug and self-satisfied.

Looks pretty good for a 50$$ machete/sword. I like the gladius one. Going to get them all eventually. I like it mostly because it's "disposable" and it also gets the job done. I'd make a leather sheath for it though. It's good for going on a hike in the forest. By the way... The "thumbs up" won't work. Cheers from Montreal.

Dha normally have no guard, because one of the ways that it's gripped is to hook the thumb over the top of the grip alongside the base of the blade. The tactile feedback from having skin contact on the side of the blade basically makes for foolproof edge alignment.

Not sure that the Coldsteel version is true to type. Disclaimer, I have very little knowledge on the subject. I have seen this style of sword in Nakhon Sawan, in the main hill top temple there were 20+ examples at the base of one statue, but you don't see the blades due to scabbards. Round two handed hilts, no guard and short blades (all in wooden scabbards). I purchased a locally made version from a local knife & sword maker. It is not ideal, made from P20 steal, but you get the idea on usage, mainly one handed and two handed for the thrust. Also have a legit bamboo handled single handed Thai sword, which would run rings around the temple style sword. The legit Thai sword is only 480grams, aggressive distal taper, yet flexible, durable and a demon cutter.

Matt, thanks for the review, it was interesting. The question is, is this machete more of a training sword or a tool for survival in the jungle and wooded areas? And the second question, is the long handle comfortable or does it rather interfere with delivering power strikes?

Hey! Thanks for watching! I would say it is more of a tool for survival. This video was about identifying it as a very “low cost” alternative to a sword for training in basics of cutting. But to be clear, if you are planning on starting a journey in Thai martial arts or any martial arts system…in my opinion….it is best to get a real training sword. The Thai Machete is just a good, long, sharp bladed implement that you can get two hands on to see if you enjoy cutting with a sword-like blade for little money. To answer your 2nd question, The long handle is very comfortable and does not interfere with power strikes. I was gripping it like I would grip a Katana. It was comfortable with 1 hand as well.

Thanks man!!! That was a very nice sword. I don’t own it anymore. Sold it a while back. When that sword came out there was very little on the market that was like it, within its price category. Since then, long two handed sabers and messers have become more popular so there are other compelling offerings. But…for the price that was a nice sword.
