Thanks Joe ! As I know 65Mn steel is used in rock crushers, grinding mills railway tracks and Spring steel plates for trucks that need high wear resistance, but not for a knife or a machete ! But the most Chinese knives are made of 65Mn steel . Why? Because lots of the materials came from vibration damping of scrap trucks，they are so damn cheap ! So as a Chinese, I almost never buy these knives because they are all garbage. I prefer knives made in Taiwan, South Africa and other countries.And what can I say ? Shame on we Chinese!😷😷😷

i laughed so hard when the first whack on the iron rod broke it again so easily lolol. thank you so much for the real review and again for exposing this. i consider myself blessed because due to your warnings i was able to pick up 2 South Africa 1055 All Terrain Choppers as a backup to the one ive been using for years. to me its the best machete and i use it for most everything outside in the woodlands. it has chopped countless trees, roots, shrubs, thorns, vines etc and never failed me, ive thrown it hard, hit dirt and rocks hard, cut up countless snakes and other pests and it just works well and won't let me down despite very rough use. im so glad to have extras since they might never be the same now. truly sad. but again i thank you for showing the truth in real hard use. When they do, we get a new test video :) And the specs are similar but real JoeX test is the truth. Though I speculate that they might have a worse temper (bad heat treatment) which would give higher edge retention due to hardness but make its toughness a lot worse. This would be consistent with the snapping off of the steel.

Today I received a Gladius Machete from Cold Steel directly. It's a 65Mn version from China. It came very blunt on all of the edges and the point was not centered. I'm pretty disappointed. I need to replace it. The Jungle Machete that I received from Cold Steel had a much sharper edge and overall the quality was OK. It's also from China. I have to agree that in the real world, 1055 high carbon steel is superior to 65Mn despite having very similar material composition on paper. This quality of steel does not reflect the other steels available from Cold Steel such as AUS10 or CPM S35VN. Those steels are sexy. The 65Mn is either simply inferior or there are major issues with proper heat treatment of the steel. I don't know but I would rather pay a little bit more money for the usual quality from Cold Steel. That old 1055 blade that you showed told a real story.

A cold steel machete failing on the rock. Ha. Well, I guess if I ever manage to mess up the 1055 version of this one that I got a few years ago then I'll likely have to accept a much lower quality replacement or pay quite a lot more. Thankfully it is a 1055 one and the most serious thing I occasionally do with it is hack away at finger width branches so it will probably last about forever. I imagine anyone in the market might look through physical stock at whatever hardware store/garden center for any remaining 1055s to grab them while they might still be out there. Don't trust anything online since they are deceptively labeled as if nothing changed. 65Mn is better than 1055 for some things. This is not one of them. The other issue is the quality of the manufacturing, which given just how much worse these are doing with joe X I am thinking also took a hit.
