65mn is a high carbon spring steel. 0.65 carbon (0.10% more than 1055) with about 1% Manganese. It's used in high strength springs and is a very popular choice for budget swords. The steel composition is chemically superior to basic 1055 because the manganese makes it stronger AND more wear resistant. Don't give up on Cold Steel yet. They may have some teething problems at the new factory, but if we badger GSM enough about faulty heat treats, we'll get them to correct it. They may be using the same tempering protocol as the 1055 but that needs tweaking with Manganese steel

The magnesium in the 65mn made the steel too hard. The 1055 wont hold an edge as long but is more ductile than the alloy steel. Meaning the 1055 is a superior choice for a machete, its just more durable. At least that would be my assesment anyway. Oh & btw i do have the original & the handles wouldnt break like that one did. The 1055 machetes fail similarly but I think they took a little more abuse before failing. The bend test was very agressive. The flex on the blade could be beneficial to absorb heavy impacts. Too good edge retention might be that sign. but bend from the side why so much flexible ? Steel rod vertical impact should still good for it .....? (65 Mn in my country use in hoe. It away impact concrete - stone 14 years + never broken just... the edge bad for knife.)
@nandayane3 ай бұрын
@@lordseyren5454 Normally when manufacturers have a soft heat treat on the tang and a hard ones on the blade it’s to dampen it’s to relieve shock transmitted through the blade to the handle when striking things. Old knives and swords from the 1800’s and earlier would have iron tangs and steel blade because the iron tang would dampen the shock.
@zeroneutral3 ай бұрын
I don't think they are heat treating the tang much at all causing it to be too soft and bendable. 65Mn has very low hardness if it's not quenched. If the steel were very hard, it would then be brittle and break before deforming. That's not what happened here.
@zeroneutral3 ай бұрын
@@lordseyren5454 The flex in the blade is great for a machete. It allows the blade to withstand impacts. However, the tang is extremely soft and bendable without retaining it's shape. The manufacturer needs to properly quench and heat treat the full tang. It could be that the handle is intended to be a failure point by design.

I'm curious to see the other retests. This one gives the impression that they are not necessarily bad now compared to the various competitors, particularly at that ~$30 price point, but they sure are not great like the 1055s were. The old 1055 offerings from CS seemed like a bright point in that whole market. Machetes in general are kinda garbage from the major brands. CS was the exception. Now they are just another "meh" product like those other major brands. The false advertising about them still being 1055 everywhere, to include on parts of the individual packaging itself, seems like a huge problem though. It literally says 65Mn on one side and 1055 on the other.
