Cold Steel LEATHERNECK SF: This tough, combat-ready fixed blade has a distinct and iconic blade style, which has been proven to be exceptionally popular with our brothers and sisters in the armed forces: The 39LSFC Leatherneck-SF (for Semper-Fi) by Cold Steel has a beautiful saber ground clip point blade. Hollow ground and honed by hand to a startling razor sharpness. The blade is made from German D2 Tool Steel and finished with a non-reflective, highly scratch resistant black powder coating. To keep the fingers from sliding forward onto their keen edge, the Leathernecks come with a superior solid steel guard. Made of thick steel with double quillons that are turned slightly forward to provide excellent protection for your hand while offering minimal interference in the use of these knives when performing utility tasks. The handles are made of deeply checkered Griv-Ex that totally encompasses the Leathernecks extra wide, full tang. They offer unsurpassed gripping power through their palm hugging oval cross section and unique finger trough. The Leatherneck handle is capped with a thick, machined steel butt cap (not cheap casting or plastic like others on the market today) so they can also deliver frightful blows with the butt or even double in an emergency as a hammer. To carry the Leatherneck safely and conveniently in all environments, it comes with a sturdy and versatile Secure-Ex sheath, complete with fully detachable and ambidextrous belt loop. Specifications Item Number: 39LSFC Name: Leatherneck-SF Weight: 11.7 oz. Blade Thickness: 5.0 mm Blade Length: 6.75" Handle: 5.0" Long Griv-Ex Overall: 11.75" Steel: German D2 Steel w/ Black Powder Coat Sheath: Secure-Ex Made in Taiwan

I have the two cold steels. That tops looks like a big dirty beast! I have both sizes of the leatherneck and on the short one, the guard came loose and you can wiggle the butt cap a bit, but it’s still operational. (Although I’ve seen videos of the whole handle falling off). Doesn’t seem to be a problem with the big one though.

Really hope GSM start using D2 as the budget steel in their cheaper folders like everyone else does now.. I so wish my Range Boss and Tuff Lite had D2 instead of 4034 and AUS8.. I believe a D2 Range Boss 2 would be one of their best sellers if they kept the price under $50.

I'd like that Leatherneck. Excellent blade from what I've heard. Some say it's better than a K-Bar. Don't think I'd care for the Tops knife. I've got a quarter inch thick Schrade that is a poor excuse for an outdoor knife. Too thick to be useful. Very impressed with Cold Steel as well.

I have some quarter inch Schrades, in 1095, and with the 7" blade, they are awesome for batoning wood. That's to split or to make notches for snares or pothooks. It's not cold steel reliable, and mine are several years old, but they take a razor sharp edge and I have different knives for game processing and general cooking.

I'll probably pick one of these up too. I have the old one with a satin blade, and probably AUS8,. From the research I did before the video, The original models came in 4116 supposedly. They might actually ship the steel to Taiwan, since the country has almost no resources for their production. I have the Ka-bar version of the Mk.2 with the leather handle, because i like the feel and smell of leather and a friend of mine has the one with the Kraton, which i sharpen for him, so i know his one is good too. Have seen bad Ka-bars though as well. Ours are like 6 years old. A lot can change with a company in that time. I guess for the money the CS is the better buy at the moment. The Ka-bars have thinner spines so they are better balanced i guess as a fighting knife, Cs are more front heavy so they would make for a better chopper. Perfect gift in my opinion. Always enjoy your Cold Steel videos.

@@knifevideochannel4657 I have not had a chance to check out a lot from Ontario. They are relatively expensive here in Europe and not widely available, neither are Kydex sheaths for them. The effort of getting one for what they are seems not worth it, most of the time. No also have not idea how Case´s version is, i don´t like it visually that much and again harder to get. Ka-bars and Cold Steels are easier to find and more inexpensive. I thought about starting a sub collection of the Mk.2 a while ago, since there are so many variants. Extrema Ratio makes one as well. Not to mention the many versions from WW2. Would be a cool collection to have. Happy Thanksgiving!

the leatherneck is the best kabar by far, and theres really one main reason, the tang. i have broken 2 kabar's batonning, they just dont have the strength with that narrow tang and abrupt blade / tang juncture. i trust the cold steel and have battoned plenty with it (granted mine is the sk-5 version with a ffg) but i think the saber hollow ground d2 should hold up fine too. i will say, i like the kabar blade grind and finish better, but the almost sharp clip point is annoying for battoning.

Since the ka-bar fighting knife has a stick tang my guess is any of these other brands version of it with a full tang would be tougher for harder use. I have an Ontario sp6 and out of the box it came very dull but for only 42 bucks on Amazon I wasn't expecting much. It took some work to put a good edge on it but after putting a good edge on it and stripping the powder coat off the blade it's a fantastic knife. Good thing about cold steel knives (in my experience) is they're usually awesome out of the box

I collect Marine Corps style knives. The Leatherneck is one of the better ones. Yeah, Kabar and Ontario are about the same with the difference being the coating, park vs paint/powder coating. Pretty much the same as the Camillus, though Camillus discontinued theirs after the company changed hands. TOP's is probably the best on the market with the SOG's version being the worst. Even the SOG ain't terrible, you just have to know its limitations. Schrade's was absolutely the best value w/ the hollow handle but I believe they discontinued it also. Overall the Leatherneck is probably the best value now that Schrade left us hanging. Though the new one with the longer blade I don't trust. The MK2 didn't have that blade length and that tang. 7in is the limit for a rat tail tang. This is why the SOG is inferior, a thinner tang than any with a thinner blade. Although decent not as good as competitors. I find Mtech's at the swap meet better for $20 a much better value.

@@knifevideochannel4657 I've seen some videos on poorly quality control handles on new Spec Plus knives. I got lucky that my handles seem to be well made. That said, if you get a bad one, I believe Ontario will replace it for free. The switch to 1075 steel was a positive in my opinion. And while their new MOLLE sheaths leave a lot to be desired, they're definitely better than the old Cordura sheaths.

@@knifevideochannel4657 I disagree that the Ontario Spec Plus knives are poorly made. Yes, they leave the sharpening up to the user, and the sheaths aren't great. They're strong 1075 carbon steel knives though, with excellent handles. For the price, I think they're pretty good. If they were to send out their Spec Plus series with razor sharp factory edges, and locking Kydex or hard polymer sheaths, they'd be twice the price. I'm okay with it. My SP10 Marine Raider Bowie is still sitting in my drawer unsharpened. I'm not looking forward to sharpening it, but it will be a good sturdy performer once I do.
