Did surprisingly well for D2 to be fair. You're never going to break it with normal use, even harder tasks like splitting/batoning won't be a problem. A secondary convex will probably stop the very tip chipping & significantly improve edge stability overall.

Good test. D2 seems to be pretty tough. It is certainly tougher than 440 and 154 while charts would lead you to believe they are of the same toughness. Thanks for the video - it really helps making purchasing choices and shows how different steels really perform, and it shows that steel charts are just advertising gimmicks. So D2 is probably on par with Elmax in toughness or at least with S35VN. I think it's still a good steel for folders but big survival fixed blades should be made out of 1055 or 1095 or something like that.
@joex2 жыл бұрын
yeah, i mostly agree! cheers!
@Youtube-Censorship-Police2 жыл бұрын
d2 is not nearly as tough as elmax lol, i doubt it is even as tough as 154cm. i don't think it did well here, tip went fast, and the blade snapped. i've chipped many d2 blades from just cutting 0815 stuff, rarely happens with 154 or 440c.
@patricktakada95512 жыл бұрын
These tests are more useful for examining a knife design, rather than a steel. There are too many variables to make conclusions like you are doing here. For all we know the HRC of this knife is 58, while the charts you've seen have shown it at 62 or something. This knife did okay.
@willamxavier73052 жыл бұрын
This knife appeared to perform better than kabar bk9.
@billmorrigan3862 жыл бұрын
@@willamxavier7305 Yeah, good point. It looks like they have put too much Rockwell hardness on the 1095 steel of the Kabar bk9. So making purchases based on the type of steel alone may backfire, as manufacturers often put excessive Rockwell hardness on the blade, and the Rockwell number is not available for every knife. They primarily cater to knife collectors, use stainless steels, excessive Rockwell numbers, etc. Most expensive knives are way too brittle to be survival knives including those that are advertised as survival knives but in reality they are way too brittle like the Kabar bk9. This means that tests like the ones on this channel are of crucial importance when choosing more or less expensive knife for outdoorsmanship. And the Kabar bk9 is a bad chopper despite the 1095 steel because metal fatigue will accumulate and it will break into pieces, as the manufacturer put too much Rockwell on the blade.

How about an edge retention test prior to actually destroying the knife? Maybe a simple shaving or paper cut to show the out of the box sharpness then proceed to chopping wood maybe 3 whacks, cut paper to check edge. Proceed with 10 whacks then paper cut test. Keep doing 10 whacks and paper cut test until it fails paper cut test. Afterward go on with the gorilla test of tip strength and onward to nuclear bomb test.
