I lucked out when I found my Cold Steel ultimate hunter in CTS-XHP almost a year after the switch to CPM-S35VN. Which I love S35VN too but for my money the XHP just seems to perform a little better both in use and sharpening. Love that steel! And the knife. The recon-1 is a hellovu blade too. Great explanation and overview btw.

I think CTS-XHP performs well because it's very fine grained. The edge doesn't get overly toothy with use.

CS CTS XHP performs really well in my use. I cleared out a dense trail that was overgrown with branches and vines. Then by accident I sliced through my north face boot. All the way through and luckily missed my foot. It sliced it open like I was slicing air. There was no friction. This was the colossus model. A funny looking knife but it's performs really well with a huge wide thin flat grind. It's like a spyderco on steroids lol.

My favorite knife channel. Another excellent video. When CS first came out with their CTS XHP I thought "about time!" Wasn't a fan of their 8A and blade coating. I just got Spyderco's Kbife Center exclusive Manix in CTS XHP and I'm even more impressed with how long it's staying sharp. I would love to see a comparison between the two. Thanks for all the great work You do.

Cold Steel has stopped making it's 5.5-inch Recon 1 and is now only listing the 4-inchers in its catalogs. Wonder why? Also, what do you have against AUS8A? I've used it extensively and Cold Steel's heat treat is right on. AUS8A sharpens up just fine and to blisteringly sharp. I know many people who hard use AUS8A and the only complaints I've heard are from those who use CRKT AUS8 and, more commonly, AUS8 Chinese comparable 8Cr13. I prefer nicer steels all things being equal, but nice steels cost more, and frankly, there are some places I carry primarily for self protection. And in such cases, it mattereth not what the steel is as long as it's very sharp. The original CS OSS and similar knives originally were made in 420. Lynn Thompson upgraded them to AUS8A and they're still top grade fighting knives, but the old 420s continue to be outstanding fighting knives for man or beast. I love tantos and the knife you have here have hollow grind blades. Not the best for batonning, but it didn't surprise me that your knife cut so well. The slab roof of the knife makes it plenty strong and the tip almost unbreakable, and the hollow grind will give it a great edge.

I love tactical knives. I love the looks of them, and let's face it, just because it is tactical, doesn't mean it can't be used for your everyday cutting tasks. They still have a point and a sharp edge. No I don't buy them for self defense..I have never, and hope I never will need to use a knife for self defense. That's not why I like them, I just love the looks of them. I'm not a big fan of tanto's though..I like either clip points or spear points. Just my personal preference.

CTS-XHP is definitely one of my favorite steels. Holds a glass smooth edge for a VERY long time. If you run your fingernail down the edge, it doesn't get toothy for a very very long time.

Cold Steel knives are superb, and even when they were making their blades of AUS8A, I had no issues with them. The heat treat has always been been exceptional and the steel sharpening a breeze. When I began carrying a CTS-XHP it was great, but I went back to the AUS8A because I was used to carrying the Voyager. I could have just bought an upgraded Voyager with AUS10A blade, but why bother? I could have carried my Recon 1 with a CTS-XHP if I needed a blade with a superb steel. But I carry my AUS8A blade with a breathtakingly sharp blade and it takes no time to restore my blade from meh to Heh!! Even now I frequently carry a Cold Steel 440A *Recon1* axis lock 4.3-inch (a 440A! One of the most worthless steels in the Universe!), or a *Pro-Lite* or *Night Force* 4-inch! What makes it a great steel? Because Cold Steel's fantastic heat treat!! Right now you can buy any one of hundreds of advertised knives, and not one of them can cut a stick of butter in half. You can try to sharpen said knives all day and to no avail. And that's because of the crappy heat treat. (Even Cold Steel's tech guys _hate_ the steel!) But Lynn Thompson can make 440A sing! And even experienced knife owners who _bought_ these knives accidentally nicked themselves! It was amazing. So AUS8A ain't the best stuff that came down the pike. I've yet to toss any of them and still carry a few. Don't know if I'll ever buy another CS knife again now that Lynn's gone. I'll have to wait and see what Nut'n'fancy says.

@johnroberts66953 жыл бұрын
One more thing...what's wrong with knives as weapons? Lynn Thompson has never shied away from the tactical use as knives. And the Rockwell hardness is crucial, as there are _huge_ differences in just one point. I also wish Cold Steel would try hard chrome coatings, the same as guns. You can't scratch or mar it because it has a RC of 70-71.
@kylemiller39247 жыл бұрын
I'm curious to what your impression of Cold Steel's AUS8. Is there a case to be made that AUS8 is a better choice for these style (4" hard use) blades in your opinion?
@michaelchristy49827 жыл бұрын
Kyle Miller the only advantage that AUS 8 might have is higher toughness, but other then that I'd expect no real advantage. (Maybe ease of sharpening, but that can be seen as the responsibility of the sharpener.). But if AUS 8 does have a significant increase in toughness over XHP, and that increase is something you need for your regular use, you'd probably be better off with a fixed blade. XHP is a tough enough steel that the difference should not matter.
@kylemiller39247 жыл бұрын
I have real trouble with the way S90V and S110V wear. They seem to lose their teeth rather quickly, while holding a working edge. Wondering if XHP is similar to that, or more like S30V or zdp189, which in my experience, almost get toothier with wear.
@michaelchristy49827 жыл бұрын
Kyle Miller in my experience, XHP can take a coarse edge well or polished edge well. Also, Cold Steel's XHP does really great with a coarse edge. It doesn't have the edge retention of S90V or S110V, but it'll have better toughness.
@michaelchristy49827 жыл бұрын
Kyle Miller I agree with you though, I've felt like S90V and S110V loose their teeth very quickly. Nice way to put it by the way.

Well I'm sold. There's not a better gloved/winter folder than a Cold Steel. I've got a Recon 1 and an AK47. Lawman might be next. Then again, the tanto Recon 1 in this video looks like fun. Thanks for the insights. BTW, I think AUS 8 is underrated these days. Don't tell the guy I sold it to, but I'll take the AUS8-A in my Recon 1 over the 110V in the Native I had.

Awesome work as usual! Since you are working "tactical" knives, have you considered picking up an Emerson? I would love to see what you can do on a chisel edge.
@michaelchristy49827 жыл бұрын
blueline561 thanks. The chisel grinds are actually what has always kept me away from Emerson. Seems like some people love them, and some people hate them. They've just never done it for me. And really, it's more that one side of the knife is blank, not the edge grind. I'm not posing an argument on function. I just don't like the look of it.
@blueline56147 жыл бұрын
Michael Christy I just picked up an Emerson Mini Roadhouse which is actually V ground with a chisel edge. It's 154cm @ 57-59. I will see how sharp I can get it after I put it to some hard use.
@taylorung19527 жыл бұрын
Between the para 2 and recon 1 what would you pick for a hard use folder?
@michaelchristy49827 жыл бұрын
Taylor Ung the Recon 1. But I also think that "hard using" a folder (like batoning logs with it) is stupid. An activity like batoning is a ridiculous expectation to put onto a folding knife.
@taylorung19527 жыл бұрын
When i mean hard use i dont mean batoning but hard cutting?
@michaelchristy49827 жыл бұрын
Taylor Ung the PM2 will cut better, but the Recon 1 probably has an stronger build... maybe. It's a tough call. I've been fairly rough with both (without going into misuse of the knives), and both did great. But you have to keep in mind, Spyderco's are made to cut, which is really the purpose of a knife. But both are good choices. If you're trying to decide which one to get, save and get both.

@michaelchristy49827 жыл бұрын
PowerMadHeadBanger XHP is not bad to sharpen. If course it will work with diamond stones, but it won't resist being sharpened on water stones either (or other alumina stones), because it doesn't contain high amounts of vanadium or even tungsten. It's corrosion resistance should be very good at 16% chromium with 1.60% carbon. The steels toughness should be good as well. Even though the steel is high in chromium, it's not heavy in vanadium, tungsten, moly, etc.

If you had to choose a steel for this knife that you would be as strong as possible and as budget friendly as possible, what steel would you choose? I just think that a brittle steel makes no sense to pair with the TriAd lock and I think a super expensive steel makes no sense in tactical knife because if you gonna carry it can be apprehended by the policeman.
@michaelchristy49826 жыл бұрын
PowerMadHeadBanger a brittle steel doesn’t make any sense for a tactical knife. However, a steel like CTS-XHP isn’t a brittle steel. In fact, steels being out through the PM process increases their toughness. I think CruWear would be a good choice. I don’t mind a little bit of cost to a knife. I don’t have problems with the police. Also, if I’m choosing a knife steel (especially something I might need to depend on), I don’t think it’s the time to hold back on cost.

Taiwanese here, I really don't understand why some Americans keeping looking down on Taiwanese made products, seriously we are not in the 80s anymore. Taiwan now make just as good, if not better products than the USA, especially for the same price, we are almost neck and neck to Japan in terms of quality control. Taiwan is actually a very advanced country and most people there enjoy high quality products, even more so than Americans, and we are growing, really fast. Ontario RAT-1, Cold Steel American Lawman/Recon 1/AK47/SR1, Spyderco Sage....ever heard of those knives? They are all made in Taiwan, they are all extremely well made and they are all loved by many knife owners. I would take the Taiwan made SR1 over the US made 4-max all day any day.

strange that they have a problem stating the Rockwell. Transparency is good. Secrecy is SHIT. If it's easy to sharpen, it may not be very hard...

The hipsters don't dig tactical. I love to have options on self defense.

After wathing you sharpen your knife keep the stone on a bench, table. Not in your hand. Thats why i can see that your bevel is not even. You are wobbling all over the place. Two swipes on each side and then a swipe on a leather strop at a steeper bevel to remove burr, and you are done. Use a good compound on the strop.

I hate that my name is my youtube account... but lets bs real who t.f is buying this knife for something other than self defense? Why do people think tact knives are a bad look on the industry? I live in Canada, regardless im not a fan of firearms. But ive been in some situations and this is better than 2 fists that's for sure

Spring breaks and you’re screwed
@michaelchristy49826 жыл бұрын
stanley Hicks haven’t heard of that happening very much. What’s this even in reference to?

So I have the tanto recon 1 but with a different locking mechanism. It’s the one that’s located on the side of the knife towards the blade. Anyways the spring broke and knife no longer locks.

stanley Hicks have you contacted Cold Steel about it?

CS CTS XHP performs really well in my use. I cleared out a dense trail that was overgrown with branches and vines. Then by accident I sliced through my north face boot. All the way through and luckily missed my foot. It sliced it open like I was slicing air. There was no friction. This was the colossus model. A funny looking knife but it's performs really well with a huge wide thin flat grind. It's like a spyderco on steroids lol.
