+knives save lives You have to consider that much of the "knife community" are either collectors who barely use their knives (usually the ones who "have no use for a fixed blade", and thus spend ridiculous money on underperforming folding knives from the usual over-hyped brands), or people who put political correctness before practicality. Cold Steel is not the brand for people who invest in knives as an "art form".
@Prometheus1111

as a member of the knife community i am no stranger to the reputation. i like high dollar knives and cheap knives, i just like them in general but, cold steel deserve a good reputation. out of all the knives i have used and reviewed i would say they are the hardest working knives i've laid hands on. i have an american lawman in aus8a and it has spent a lot of time being twisted in the ground both grass and gravel and i have pried with it and have used it for chopping and have used it to baton kindling with and i've used it for 2-3 hours in all grips and still found it comfortable. it's a damn good knife and it's survived well and i still have it.

@@andrew-ripley1747 There are very few knife enthusiasts that understand that most knife guys dont understand that a knife needs and has to be strong!...Like you said most collectors are collecting for blade material or bearings in the pivot titanium frames and locks Lynn Thompson said it best there is a dumbing down of the knife community Cold Steel has caused knife companies like Spyderco and CRKT to up their game in folding knife locks and strength of their knives in general. When it all boils down to it and the time comes to depend on your civilian carry folding knife make mine COLD STEEL PERIOD POINT BLANK END OF DISCUSSION!!!!....Lynn Thompson and his Company Cold Steel are American LEGENDS!!

Proper edge geometry as well as proper heat treatment is crucial for the blade's performance. Vast majority of knives break and can't hold much stress because serial production leaves so much space for errors during heat treatment. That is why i would always buy a hand made knife from the private knifemaker or bladesmith.

ill never understand why people scoff at cold steel knives, they are some of the toughest knives on the market at a fraction of the price. I have a spyderco shaman that i love but i admit i try to baby it bc its so expensive that if i broke it id be bummed out bc im NOT buying another one. My recon 1 ive had for 4 years and have put that thing through the ringer, all its ever needed was a touch up on the wet stone. If i lost or broke it today id just hop on amazon and buy another no problem.

I love reading reviews and comments from people saying the Recon 1 is a cheaply made knife. One guy on Amazon says its a cheaply made knife and to spend more money on a more expensive knife. He says it's all hype. I guess I just watched some hype and not a knife standing up to abuse. I wonder what knives he is talking about that can take more abuse than the Recon 1? I watched all the videos. They all looked real to me and not hype. I guess he was mad because he broke his $300 knife opening a box. There's another guy saying this knife is useless as a utility knife especially the tanto. What do these people use their knives for? Cutting apples? Opening envelopes? Yeah in that case I would say there are better knives suited for that purpose. Cold Steel Recon 1. You either love it or hate it. Thumbs up or down. Who loves it. Who hates it.

Cold Steel knives get a bad rap for whatever reason, but I have many and are my favorite knives. They are no frills, tough knives at a good price point. One of the main reasons I like the Cold Steel folders is the Tri-Ad lock. I feel safe the lock won't give. I EDC my Recon 1's for work and going out. The black coated one for work and the satin stainless for going out. My knives are like American Express. Never leave home without it. 🤙🏾

That stabbing of the pallet terrifies me... I was doing this same shit when I was 16 with a friend... Yes it was a shitty folder and the lock failed folding the blade over my fingers cutting 3 of them to the bone. Worst and most painful injury I've ever had I got tons of stitches and ligaments or whatever had to be fixed because if it luckily I had an doc that was second to none and I lost no function luckily and that was 20 years ago. I've heard great things from Cold Steel just be careful man locks will eventually fail and then you will understand my situation. I want of of these to EDC but I also am worried that it's just a bit much for a tactical knife. I already carry a 3.5" spring assist for daily tasks but I want something slightly more intimidating if I should ever need it. Plus big knives make nice conversation pieces

Nearly as fast as a switchblade and a solid work knife. Mine has taken all kinds of punishment over the years and is gorgeously unharmed. Total trust in this blade, grip and lock. Thank you Cold Steel for an excellent product at a reasonable price. I stripped the black paint off the blade to see the grain of the steel and greatly prefer it. I have an AK-47 and I love it because it looks like a “Predator”… I think the AK-47 might be superior to the Recon family because of the aluminium piece it has at the back that can be used as a blunt instrument and the handle together with the aluminium piece just protects and covers your hand better that the Recon knives. It’s almost like the Cold Steel “Spartan”. I would love to see an AK-47 Cold Steel with a Tanto blade, anyone???? Great video by the way.

Great job..A "tactical" knife should be able to take those stressors. You'll experience similar forces when hitting bone and other hard surfaces similar to it...Elmaxx is tricky to get the heat treat right but I've had other Elmaxx blades were the tip has snapped off. Its a great steel for edc but very hard to do right in a tactical folder..I cant say for certain its the companies fault at the same time its really great to know these things before someone stakes their life on it

Cold Steel imo makes some of the all time best knives. Nothing in the price range of Cold Steel knives (and often times even far more expensive) comes close to the durability, reliability, performance and Bad-assery of their Blades. I'm pretty much only interested in collecting Cold Steel... Spyderco and Benchmade are nice, but they are mostly way too expensive, and most of their locks cant hold a candle to the Almighty Tri-Ad lock...

if you get a replacement can we see some views of the tip geometry? The broken knife seemed to penetrate better and may have a less beefier tip. Also, the varying levels of rot in that pallet make for an inconsistent medium. Im by no means justifying the breakage, just want to understand the reasoning a bit better. The recon also has a softer and thus less brittle blade steel. This also go to prove what my dad always told me- '' Your pocket knife is the most expensive and least effective pry bar or screwdriver you will ever own". Cheers

The Voyager XL knives..... Are some of the absolute best knives I've ever owned. Cold Steel gets such a bad rep due to some of their over the top pieces they make..... But I have had better luck out of their products than any other ones ever..... If I could only choose just one blade to go through the apocalypse.... it'd be one that Mr Thompson made. I say all this as a Spyderco Fan Boy too.....

It's so annoying that knives are so much more expensive in the UK! It's 79 dollars there and 130 pound here, and the pound is stronger than the dollar! Is it worth 130 though?

It's the same here in the EU , about double of what he quoted. I still bought one because it was hard to find a backlock knife that was better for the money.

Lolz, first edge looks like a nice design, but back to the drawing board on the steel! The company should be thanking you, through their gritting, wide smiling, teeth. Lay the love and extra swag on this man, First Edge!

The Cold steel recon 1 was issued to Navy Seals in the early 2000's. Its pretty much the best hard use folding knife you can get bar none.

I may not be cold steels biggest fan but I admit they make some tough fucking knives.

I don't see how you can break this knife before breaking your hands without putting it in a vise and hammering it from the sides. Or embedding it into a tree trunk, then stomping on it with all your weight, over and over again. Or taking a chisel and hammering at it's pivot.
