Budget Blade! This one might be designed as a military style field knife, but those tests have been done. Let's instead try this knife doing stuff we'd normally use a bushcraft style knife for and see how it does.

Sorry, but no. SK-5 is purely a carbon steel, and will rust. You can prevent rust by oiling, coating and simply care for your knife, but it is not stainless. If you are thinking of the Ontario Blackbird SK-5, it is made from 154cm, not SK-5 ;)

I have the SRK in SK5 and VG10, good knives with classic designs. I have used the SK5 Recon Tanto for 14 months for all camp duties from Florida, WV, MD, up to Maine. It did everything without issues. I even made a fire bow and drill with it from poplar wood The SK5 held its edge very well and is amazingly easy to sharpen. A great all around knife that I would not hesitate to pick over my Bark River Aurora 3V, or my Fallkniven X series. I just ordered a VG10 Recon and expect to be even better!

I bought one of these in AUS8a back in 2009/10 with the intention of Bushcraft and too see just how tough this knife was. I use it to this day. I have beat the absolute crap outta this knife!!! You can easily batton through 5-6in logs. I live in southern Louisiana and fire isn't really necessary down her even in our "winter" Month so I rarely carry and ax or hatchet. There's just no need for the extra weight. However you always end up with a fire, lol. With that being said I've done a whole crap ton of battoning with this on all sorts of wood. It can do fine carving tasks if you know how to utilize a long blade, can be a chopper(if need be), definitely a pry bar, works great as a mini machete in swamp areas where I live, aus8 can create Sparks off of rocks(however they are on the small side but definitely works with charcloth), does all Bushcraft tasks with ease. Hell I've even cut a steel belted tire off a rim with no problem. I've never had any chips or rollovers on the edge. Always stays sharp and responds well to a ceramic rod for touchups. Tanto tips are fairly hard to break. They're also really good for using as chisel to create square holes for connect joints. The knife can be far more useful then you would initially think. Especially for a knife like this. I've easily used this knife hundreds of hours over the years, I totally trust it. Is it perfect for Bushcraft.....meh....not overly, but it definitely gets the job done with no issue. If this is all I had I'd be perfectly fine with that. I can't attest to $50 budget steel model in the video but the AUS8a works just fine. Holds an edge better than most my knives. Not to mention it's a hell of a fighting / tacticool knife, lol Sheath is decent. I converted mine to a drop-leg rig and added a molded kydex holder for my multi-tool. Personally it's one of my favorite knives. Its a beast! Takes a licking keeps on ticking.

This knife is my new daily carry along with my Leatherman Surge. This knife is big enough not to attract attention and big enough to do some real damage in self-defense if the need arose. I love the slight curve of the blade which makes it perfect for slicing as well as being a very sharp stabbing knife. This knife is perfect and tough. I can see why more and more military guys are carrying it, it's just a badass blade to carry all the time. Very good quality and very affordable.

I have found that it does these handles good if you wash them off with hot soapy water and an old toothbrush. When the knife is new it gets the slippery release compound off and when it's used it removes all the accumulated grease and grime. Just make sure that you rinse off and pat dry with a dark cotton cloth - like a t-shirt. Then let the knife sit for a while and dry off completely. Do not use a white fluffy towel or kitchen roll or bits will stick to it and you will have to start over. Of course, if you get the blade wet you should treat that accordingly. Result? Super-sticky handles!

@@chrismichellijr9217 I'd like to have 1 tough stainless steel knife, for times when I'm doing something in which I know I can't keep the knife dry. I'm trying to decide between the San Mai 3 SRK or Recon Tanto. I own the SK5 Recon Tanto. I actually bought both the Recon Tanto and SRK in SK-5. But after seeing how much stronger (the design) and more versatile the Recon Tanto was, I didn't see the point of needing the SRK as well, and returned it. What's unclear to me is whether these Cold Steel San Mai 3 blades are actually stainless. Some of the inner layers appear to be exposed in certain places on the blades, and the inner steels aren't stainless to my knowledge. If I'm still going to have to oil it, I'm not sure it makes much sense to pay an extra $65 over the SK-5 version.

This is an excellent knife, and it represents another excellent value from Cold Steel. Hollow grind is new to this version from what i understand. SK5 is a sick steel too. Its taking on a new image in some of the new wilderness blades by Work tough gear (which Chris highly endorses) but they are calling it SK85. They're doing so seems a tad suspicious to me, but in no way diminishes my appreciation for the steel, and I would pay what it costs. some people think that a steel is less because its offered on budget options (cough D2) but all that really means is that the knife is a great value. There are actually pretty crappy steels on expensive knives out there, for example, Victorinox and CRKT use .4116 on some knives around and over 100 bucks, and there are tons of brands that still employ 440C (which is not a bad steel at all) on very premium knives, but its not gonna have the kind of performance that I get with my Kershaw Link in CPM-20CV, and I payed 65 bucks for that baby (it usually retails for around 80, which is still awesome) I just wanna say, D2 is an excellent steel for daily use, and I dont think youll notice much of a difference between it and 154CM in use (but less stainless) so talk crap about D2 if you want, but it is a great steel whether you think so or not. If a day comes where S35VN is a budget steel, would you defend it to a newer knife enthusiast who is spoiled? I would.

I'm not a big fan of tantos. I'm just not, but in reality, with the exception of skinning, you can do pretty much anything with a tanto that you can do with a more traditional blade, and that secondary point actually gives you capabilities that you wouldn't otherwise have. For example, the Top's "Survivor 2020" that was designed by Mykel Hawke is a modified tanto design, but once you understand how to use it properly it's a very capable survival knife. I'd expect this one to work about as well as any other knife with similar features.

The whole intended use thing is crap. Put it this way if you was drowning in a lake and a large toy inflatable killer whale bobbed past would you grabbed hold of it or wait for something else with the intended use of life preserving to come along. You go with what you've got.

The only reason why I would be hesitant to get one of those for EDC work stuff is in the increasingly likely event of the unthinkable happening and I am forced to swat off a few zombies, my choice in swatter will be used against me by those who's job it is to bury the survivors of the aftermath. e.g. (why did i use my KA-BAR instead of my Leatherman?).

I agree and couldn’t have possibly said it better myself...at the end of the day,it’s a think piece of high carbon steel with a sharp edge, this should have no problem with the majority of tasks that a knife would be used for

Hell yeah bro, the bitches who hate are the yuppi metro weekend warrior guys who read you need a bk 7 for everything bushcraft. Its just a badass defense knife you could use for many other things than just deployment. My cousin used one on deployment in iraq in the Marines, he passed it on to his buddy when he was discharged. He said it was there for him through thick and thin. If you need a specific tool use it. Chances are you morons who keep fantasizing about zombies never breached a door with someone inside waiting to kill you, he did it every day for a few tours. Haha fucking zombies...

These two are hard to beat at the price point, i own this and the srk, and theyre my fave budget friendly fixed blades. Theyre little more robust then the moras, steels good, sheaths good enough, and handles good and comfy and shock absorbing. i beat up my srk until the finish wore off and its still kicking around as the user for my smaller kit.

I don't know who your friend is. He's talking about taking off the coating, and then he's saying he's worried about the tip. That knife is designed to have a very strong tip. Look at the spine of the knife. It doesn't taper until the tip. Why would you remove the coating on a carbon steel knife? I'd really love your friend to suggest a better "woods knife" for $45! Seriously, I'd like to hear about it. I've been looking for a bushcraft knife, and I can't find one in decent steel for less than the cost of this knife. The SRK has a hollow grind, and a far weaker tip. It's still a nice knife, but I'm not sure it can do anything this knife can't do.

If it is a good quality knife, hold an edge and has a secure grip, why would it NOT be a good outdoor/survival knife just because it has a tanto point and a curved blade?

I think the SRK and the tanto have their purpose. The Tanto definitely has the stronger tip. And can handle more abuse like prying because of it. The SRK , although quite strong in its own rite, can handle the finer tasks. And is a better meat processor. I carry the SRK for personal defense. And is my go to fire knife with a ferro rod. I use it more than my B.O.B. The handle is very comfortable. I really like the Tanto in a woods use/ city survival /self defense role. One note to knife designers. It’s not a thumb ramp. It’s a thumb crotch support that can be used as a thumb ramp It’s main purpose is to fill the void made by male human hands. Females don’t have this genetic trait( why women can slip bracelets over their wrists but men can’t) Please place it in the right spot on the handle/ spine for support of the male hand. It prevents cramping after weeks and years of use. Also please don’t leave it bare. Cover it on each side with handle slabs. People lost track of the design intent over the years and confused it for something it’s not.

So it’s 2021, and you’re out in the woods hiking around. Doing your bushcraft thing. You’ve made your shelter, your fire, got your coffee on. And a group of ANTIFA up to no good walk in on your campsite and two of them raise their skateboards to hit you. Suddenly the recon Tanto doesn’t sound so bad for woods use.

from what i can tell.. the SRK is just as good as the tanto. but the tanto looks cooler.. thats my take tho.. plus the tanto is a little longer so it can be slightly better for splitting some woods. and theres a version with a shorter non cutting portion at the base of a the blade (cant remember what its called). and the tip i feel is stronger than the srk as well. but i could be wrong.
