Bruce high you are the one who needs to get a life you are spreading hate for no reason. Of course the guy is out of breath he is beating on the knife while wearing a cool ass gas mask. It’s probably 2x as hard to breathe and you are the one who is being a loser. This video was entertaining and helpful showing the full extent of this knifes toughness. So in short you are the loser.

He's definitely not out of breath from just stabbing stuff, what you're hearing is his complete ass gas mask restricting his breathing which is normal. Why do you have to be so hostile for no reason?

It’s more likely due to the hollow grind,not the steel. The stats from Knife steel nerd shows that 1085 is at least 3 times tougher that 1095. Anyway one are very unlikely to break it in real life

Thanks for the testing, I second others in saying that what you are putting out there is very unbiased and no BS which I appreciate. One thing I would be interested to see is a close up of the edge afterward to get a sense of whether a particular knife rolls the edge versus chips.

@HillbillyFromTheSwamp - Mine mainly sits in my drawer too. I own the Drp Forged Survivalist as well. When I bought this knife, I bought the SRK at the same time. After comparing the 2 against each other, I kept the Recon Tanto due to blade length, blade shape, and primarily tip strength. Like you, I already have too many knives in my drawer, and I really only use one at a time. I still might buy the SRK though, if it goes on a good sale. As per Joe's videos, you never know when your knife might break catastrophically. It's good to have backups. I often open carry my Recon Tanto at night while walking my dog. It's legal here in Virginia. I would carry my Cold Steel Chaos Bowie, but I'm afraid to scare my neighbors. They're already scared of me!

I think the Böker Plus Little Dvalin would be an interesting candidate for such a test. For one, its short and tall (and unpractically thick, 5,8mm) blade makes it harder to overstress, as swinging it against something doesnt add as much momentum as the Recon's longer blade. I'm curious if thick stock 59 hrc D2 can handle abuse like sk5 steel hardened to maximum toughness by Cold Steel can.

@@joex For women. I agree on the fat tip. On the handle, interesting that the rubber handle holds up so well , when hitting the blade so hard compared to the PVC handle of the CS kukri machete that kept on breaking off when hitting the pole. The difference is amazing. I also suspect that not all polypropylene is made equal. The CS Jungle machete had the PP split also a bit when hitting hard. I'd like to see a test like that with , say, the Condor Bushcraft Parang. The green handled one. Would it hold up against the impact or would it also become damaged just like the CS Jungle machete.

I had the old recon tanto got it in 1992 when I was in Ranger bat. Back then it was a expensive knife. It was made in America then. Anyway it was the toughest knife I ever owned. ( was stolen in early 2000s) I wonder how it would compare to these $40 knives now. I know they cost more were you live but in America you can find them under $40. Really hard to beat for that price. Of course it depends on what you need it for. Keep up the abuse brother!
@joex

I thought a while about this test vs CS 4 Max Scout which passed with flying colours ... Now, beyond steel toughness (actually the Aus 10 is a tad tougher tham SK 5 so, obviously more prone to breakage) - is about the construction of the blades : a fixed blade carry all those vibrations (which are probably exponentially higher with the blade length ) all through the metal, while a folder (especially a smaller folder ) has that pivot point (in tri-ad lock, of course) which is especially designed to absorb shock ... So, unshockingly - sort of speaking, is quite logical why the 4 Max Scout remained unscathed while the Recon Tanto - although many swear on its toughness - did broke ... Now, your tests are absolutelly correct and consistent - thing is sometimes is a comparison between oranges and apples - if you know what I mean 😊

_________________________________________________________________________________________________ Joe X you are my new one and, what is also important, the first tester of knives from various companies. The only thing I want to ask you is to watch the structure of the wood into which you stick the knife during the tip test, because of this you may get an unreasonably bad impression of similar knives, because the force applied to the knife to damage the wood depends on the structure of the tree. I love your videos, thanks for your work.
