I totally agree. Durability over gadgets. Besides you would loose all those gadgets if you for some reason lost the shovel. Shovel, hatchet, paddle, frying pan, machete, self defense. What else do you need out of a shovel? A 3D-printer and home entertainment system? Simplify. Simplify. Simplify.

The bicycle inner tube would be much easier to fit if the handle was removed from the shovel, and the pre-heated inner tube installed from the smaller end (not the bulbous end of the handle!). Non-Slip, self adhesive panels can be put on the handle shaft to improve grip even in wet weather. The stuff designed for stairs is very efficient and has a really grippy surface texture and is very hard wearing. I'm going to buy some Cordura fabric and a thin sheet of lexan and make myself a reinforced sheath. I'll use my Speedy Stitcher and copper rivets to make something like the original Cold Steel Shovel Sheath, sized for the larger shovel. Heating the lexan sheet with my hot air gun will make it easier to mold to the shape of the shovel head, which it will keep when cold.

The reviews were so good on the short version that will no longer trench version came out I didn't even hesitate to buy it, and after living in Oklahoma I always take something with me into the woods to protect me against coyotes and dogs and with the weight of this thing I'm pretty confident that is doing number.

one thing i did was some grip tape around the neck of the shovel end, so when im chopping wood i can keep a solid grip on it

Nice vid. Good advice about the coyotes. I stopped unexpectedly one night and camped in an open field because I didn’t want to attempt a water crossing in the dark. Couple hours later I realized I was in the middle of an area with multiple coyote dens.

It's a case of the more you have wrapped up in one tool, if something happens to that tool the more you lose

I've watched several reviews for this one. The main gripe most have said, is that it's hard to sharpen. Have you had any problems?
@DaegDraco Жыл бұрын
No problems I use a harbor freight 1 x 30 belt sander to sharpen it

You're right on anything you said! As for tools, the more simple the design, the better the tool. That's how things work 99% of the time. The only "multifunction" tools that I respect, are anything Victorinox makes, and then and only if Victorinox is available Leatherman. I've seen trees cut down with the small saws like yours or the Opinel one. They can 10 inch logs, just by going around sawing the small parts that are created and keep going. It won't cut it as fast as a big saw, but it'won't take forever eather!
