I have this in my tool arsenal, great for camping. I've also used the edge to make fine tinder but not weathers. "Throw" the shovel into a log so it's stable and scrape the wood across the edge (as opposed to scraping the shovel across the wood). I'll always prefer to use the spine of a knife or saw but the technique works (works for knives too, for both shavings and feathers). Thanks for including the out-takes at the end --anyone who's ever thrown a sharp object knows!

That’s for sharing that technique sounds like a better way of doing it, I’ll have to give that way a go. 😆 i need to work on my aim!

for axes and shovels it seems the better method is to plant the blade into a stump or similar and then draw the stick back against the edge, makes it easier to focus pressure where you need it without the weight of the tool making the task cumbersome

I agree mate, definitely a useful bit of kit to have around but would outright replace something else. I’d still like to think I’ll have this for life though

Also there is a Russian Titatanium head version that nearly fists perfectly with the handle but does not give you that decent shopping weight to replace a hatchet. Because I live in the desert digging is a very important task so I can easily carrry the titanum head along for a back up and makes a fine cook pan.

It can help with fire management, Dakota fire hole, removing pots with bails, digging cat holes or latrines, or trenches to divert surface water, coyote wells for turbid water sources, shovel snow, chop grass, brush, branches, wood up to 3 “” diameter, scrape the ground level or bark off. With the Cordura sheath on it it becomes a self defense baton.

I shortened my handle to 10 inches. Easier to chop and pack along. No trouble digging with the shorter handle. I drilled to holes in my walking staff which turns it into a long handled shovel. Dulled the right edge of the shovel head so I can place my hand on it to help with scraping tasks and to help my baton last longer when striking it.

If you find a proper size Y branch, you can attach the head to it and now you have a pick shovel or hoe. Also a attach / carve a sturdy steeper angle Y branch and you have Grappler!!! you can remove the pain with paint stripper and boil the head in vinegar to give it a force patina ( works great )

1) this is a shovel for infantry, special forces do not use a shovel 2) I used folding shovels - there is play and they can break during hard work, although American “geologists” are looking for oil in the desert and digging sand... 3) the small infantry shovel (Russian name) is reliable, versatile and always ready for use

Just have a surplus Austrian army folding shovel. Built like a tank but I'd hate to have to haul the thing around for miles with the rest of my kit. It'll do the digging and bludgeon the branches off a tree but it would take some work before it feathersicks!!!! I think you have the right idea with that shovel, nice bit of kit!!!

I recently bought one, and the handle is alright (in my opinion), but the hardening and the sharpening (I can excuse that due to it being shipped here to Europe) of the edge seemed to be deficient. I digged for five minutes (sandy soil, plaged with rocks) and some nicks appeared over the edge due to the shovel hitting some big camouflaged rocks. I think that I could easily remove them with a file, but it surprised me a little seeing them, hearing all the good feedback on the product. Maybe it was just me, being optimistic and over-valuing the shovel. Anyway, it's in one piece, easily fixable, and sturdy. A keeper for me.

I agree with you on it being great but not really good at any particular thing to be able to replace a good knife or hatchet. I bought one a while back and keep it in my jeep as a backup to my military shovel/axe/spike thing set. Never hurts to have a second shovel to help dig things out, and sometimes you don't want to break out a whole kit just to move some earth out from in front of a tire. Oh, and for cooking, you'll want to let it sit in the embers for a while to burn off the coating and then coat it with some oil so it doesn't rust. I use mineral oil for things like that and for protecting wood because it never spoils and it's food-safe
@DazzyOutdoors
@DazzyOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Yes mate I can imagine it would be ideal for them sorts of situations. Appreciate the tip for when it comes to cooking, I am tempted to try it although I removed a coating of a knife one time and it’s a nightmare now when it comes to rust

Don't be a div just because of the whole Ukraine thing. This shovel was awesome way before any proxy war was being fought by the USA just to make billions of dollars for the military industrial complex. What are we supposed to do throw away a good tool just because we are being told by the media to hate on Russia? Guess you thought it was OK for the USA the UK & everyone else to invade Afghanistan & kill thousands of innocent men women & children & then just call it collateral damage? It was your favourite Nato tools being used in those wars, but that was OK was it? Do your homework, all wars suck a fat dick not just the current ones. My Grandfather took a rifle from a German SS trooper back in the day, then he went on for decades to use it to hunt deer in the mountains & feed his family, that rifle most likely killed hundreds of his country men but he turned it's purpose for something good. Why can't we do the same with a reproduction Russian shovel FFS? Peace.
