Talk to anyone long enough about survival knives and you’ll hear two names the KABAR USMC and the Cold Steel SRK. But how do they stack up against each other in the ultimate survival knife battle royale?? I don’t know…but we’ll figure it out!!

@@BigDaddySwingingMeat - I was referring to modern "super steels" with atleast some corrosion protection suitable for pocket knives. Yes I know 3V has been around forever but like M4, has only been used in the production knife market for a short time. Of the typical steels used today 3V ranks as one of if not the toughest. Btw It's typically used to make rotary hammer bits for drilling in masonry materials, with extremely hard carbide cutting teeth brazed to the tip of course, and other tools subjected to high shock loads and extremely abrasive conditions.
@BigDaddySwingingMeat
@BigDaddySwingingMeat Жыл бұрын
@@holdernewtshesrearin5471 8670 is an old carbon steel that has been around for a long time. It's used in some Case pocket knives and many custom knife makers still use it today because it practically impossible to chip (even at very low edge angles). In fact, there is a video here on KZbin titled "8670 Toughness Test" where a knife maker uses a knife made out of 8670 steel to baton through solid steel. Any steel that can baton through steel and still maintain its shape is incredibly tough. If 8670 held an edge for a longer time it would be much more popular than many of these "super steels" on the market today. A knife maker that uses the moniker "C. Thomas Knives" makes the majority of his knives out of 8670 steel and they are incredibly blades for those that can afford the high price tag.

Personally I'm kind of tired of people putting down the cave are putting down the Colt 1911 pistol and saying that they aren't as good as what's being made now. The fact is that the k-bar is e useful knife but if you went to a knife show with all the bushcrafting and survival expert they're going to argue about the metal, the grind angle, if it should be a saber grind or a full flat grind or if you should have a drop point or a clip point and so on. People waste a lot of time and energy arguing about the Holy Grail of knives. It's a myth and it's b******* and because you just embrace the fact that there are different knives and some people break every damn thing they have and for other people who are careful there stuff lasts forever

Good sturdy knife. It is my heavy duty knock about knife where I dont have so much invested that I worry about breakage. I have both the Italian and Taiwan 3V versions. Also a San Mai version. My Italian stone washed blade somehow is thinner than the others and the handle keeps coming loose. Cold Steel warrantied many for that reason and over compensated on the Taiwan 3V version and made it thicker. Now the new one fits to tightly in the sheath which is a bit irritating. My San Mai blade is a great knife, a bit chippy though. I haven’t had that problem with my newer 3V, it tends to roll first...

Kabar/not a survival tool/designed for fighting/killing 80 yrs ago. I picked up a vintage one for 50 bucks/the pawn shop doesn't understand knife collectors. I can sell it for 250 bucks or more. 😊 I would carry a cold steel fighting knife for fighting and my old thick sharp mora for survival. Cold steel makes better fighting knifes than that one. I guess the seals liked it due to corrosion resistance, rubber handle good when wet. The leather neck, marauder, and boot knife all better than srk for urban warfare. Seals have a different mission and environment than civilians would likely encounter.

CPM-3V steel is the best tool steel available, in theory. But on the field and mounted on the Cold Steel SRK, with its clip point blade, its length, its thickness and the fact that it is a partial tang construction (full tang = same width / thickness, from the tip of the blade to the end of the knife handle, no more no less), the blade of the SRK made of CPM-3V steel is no better than the VG10 or even the SK5. The tip also breaks as quickly as the other two, it is not more resistant to lateral stresses, no seal between the Kray-Ex and the base of the blade to prevent moisture infiltration, it is not immune to movement inside the handle and it will always have the weak point of a partial tang construction. It's not the steel that makes the quality of a knife, not only. Upgrade ? Not really : it's more of another offer for users, but it's not worth such a price difference.

I have/had the Carbon V, AUS-8A, San Mai and both the Italian and Taiwan 3V versions over the last 25 years. You clearly are speaking as someone who hasn’t tried them. The only problem I’ve ever had was the Italian 3v version was ground to thin and the handle came loose. The only one’s I would worry about the tips on are the hollow ground versions. And the San Mai version is the only one that has chipped on me. If you have talked yourself out of trying 3V steel your missing out...any knife you use as a pry bar is going to break. The SK-5 version is the one I would worry about most...especially if you’re worried about corrosion.

@@dlrmon1 you speak like a collector, not a user. It does not surprise me more than that : few people do not use their SRK 3V for fear of scratching it. And maybe that's normal - maybe - if you spread those purchases over 25 years. I would be surprised if you all experienced them in the same way and for the same durations. Let's stay down to earth : it took me a year to have the three versions still on the market (all from Taiwan, therefore). First the SRK SK5, then as I'm stupid, I read too many amateur comments on KZbin and BladeForums, I treated myself to the ultimate version in CPM 3V. And recently, I wanted to complete the trilogy with the stainless steel version. A small year of light use for a knife named "SRK". One, not 25. Big difference between cutting cigarette paper and opening a can around a campfire (Survival / Search and Rescue Knife. Survival, officialy, therefore able to open a can without being afraid). And in this exercise, all SRKs are equal, hollow or flat grind, I'm not going to rewrite the list of their weak points that only CPM 3V overrated steel fanboys don't want to see anyway. Or to test, it is rather this: steel does not make a good knife, especially in the case of the SRK. I'm surprised you didn't mention the overall decline in quality of Cold Steel brand fixed blades, in supposedly 25 years of use. Maybe their heat treatment is also to be reviewed (everything is outsourced, at CS, anyway) ... for those who use their knife, not those who look at them dry in a showcase at home. Too bad for me. I really love the design of this knife, but I'm not going to re-spend hundreds of € to find out if the copied and overpriced versions from Fällkniven or the APO-1S from Survival Lilly (also copied, and imo a bit expensive, any proportionally) are better than the original SRK. In 2023, if I had to pick up a new SRK, I would go for the VG10 San Mai and treat it gently : very shiny, in my window, far from its too tight Secure-Ex case. Or a 50€ SK5 that I will limit in use and taking into account its weak points (I'm not talking about steel, I'm not talking about grind). The ESEE 6 team (very expensive but not overpriced) / Morakniv Companion HD ss (gift price) / DC4 remains for me a business that works.

Modern Kabars use 1095 Cro van steel. The key word = Ductility . The ability for steel to flex and return to its' original geometry. 3V, like most stainless steels , lacks ductility and can have a brittle cutting edge. It may seem like a great idea to have a high Rockwell hardness (60-62) for a cutting edge , but such is not the case. The large and smaller Kabar combat knives are excellent field and hunting knives ...for a reason. ATB Richard.

@@TheIReviewStuff the rat tang is one of the most stupid design choices ever. It might be ok for a stabbing tool. For anything other than that it is just ridiculously weak. The 1095 is too soft and too thin for a allround use and abuse tool. A survival knive has to be tough, withstand abuse like prying and chopping and it needs a good edge retention to keep a keen edge for a long period of time. Aside from that, rust resistance is important. The USMC does nothing like that. I don’t know what you know about survival. I’m a professional survival trainer. So, LMAO. I would take a VG10 Kitchen knife with full tang rather than the shitty KABAR.

The rat tang is a known failure point on a kabar. That sort of transition creates stress risers which leads to fractures. But beyond the weaknesses of the design, the grind is objectively bad for fire making tasks and many camp tasks. The stacked leather design doesn’t really index well at all and turns in your hand on pull cuts. It’s a “good enough” design that’s easily mass produced and works as a utility knife and a fighting knife. If it breaks, it can be replaced. I’d take my TOPS brothers of bushcraft or any of my Fällkniven models if I had the option. That being said, it is a very important design both for the historical significance and how it is an influential design which shaped the common perception of what a military knife should look like. The company does make plenty of excellent fixed blades especially the Becker lineup. I also have some large slipjoints they made sometime before 1968 which are still chugging along decades later.

" .... perfect overall survival knife?" That object does not exist! Whatever it is will have advantages and disadvantages, depending on the circumstances, needs, threats, jobs and tasks required of the person carrying it. Mostly, we cannot even agree about what a "survival knife" actually is? (Ref the description: "Whatever knife you have on you at the time.") We have terms like utility knife, bushcrafting knife, camp knife, belt knife, hunting knife, skinning knife, search & rescue knife, tactical knife, and survival knife. Huh? What exactly are these things? What are the different tasks they are meant for? Also, people mostly have very personal likes/dislikes, preferences, pet hates, preconceived ideas, etc, especially about knives (and guns!)! Trying to match these two sets of issues is an exercise in futility, but very good for the knife (and gun!) industry! My approach has always been to go with what I know and trust, and be very careful about changing from that, unless presented with some seriously good evidence to prove that it would be a good idea. (For knives I tend to go Victorinox, Cold Steel, ESEE, and guns FN, Ruger). Not that others are inferior, but rather that I know and trust these from personal experience!

Ok lets get this right its not a kabar its a navy mk2 knife and camillus made many mot then kabar. Comparing the 2 knives is like comparing apples to oranges. The mk2 is a fighting knife where as the srk is designed to be a survival knife( it should replace the piece of crap okc pilots survival knife). Now can you use the mk2 as a survival knife yes if thats all i had,and could you use the srk as a fighter yes if thats all i had. But in reality you got one knife designed to be a fighter and the other a survival knife.

*Anything* would beat the Kabar USMC as 'the perfect overall survival knife' cos...Kabar USMC is a terrible survival knife. Many 'comparable' knives of similar price are better, in fact I'd say the Kabar USMC would be at the bottom! Ask the Dutch Bushcraft Boys or anyone who knows knives. Not saying you don't, no beefin' here brother but...phew that Kabar USMC sux b@lls dude!

Mk2 fighting knife is not a particularly good knife. Always hear “it’s a fighting knife”, great for all those knife fights we run into.

Why use the knife on a ferro rod? Ju attach a multi tool blade to the sheath, it has 90 degree spine and is carbon steel and sparks shower from multi tool blades. Spare the beautiful 3-V knife… 🥹

There's a reason the Seals use this exact knife in BUDS training. It's vastly superior to the rat tail tang Ka-Bar in a multitude of ways. Better corrosion resistance, longer edge retention, and tougher/stronger steel that's far more chip resistant.
