The pattern I'm seeing with Joe's tests is that only blades under 5" have survived intact. I think it's just the law of physics. A longer blade will 1) Smack the concrete and steel pole harder. 2) Apply more leverage during the tip tests, breaking the blades, and 3) Break faster due to their length. Shorter blades are stiffer and more resistant to breaking. I think this is why the Cold Steel SR1 Lite, 4Max and Mora Robust did so well - they all have short and thick blades with tough steel. So what we see in the longer blade tests is how well they hold up against each other. We should also expect that really long blades are never going to make it through Joe's tests without breaking because they smack down that much harder and have a lot more leverage on them when being flexed. With this in mind, I think this shows just how tough the huge Ontario Marine Raider Bowie really was in Joe's test.

Very astute. Also Joe has gotten stronger. Seriously. I think even if I put my heart into it, taking the insane risks Joe does, most of the knives he has tested would survive me. Ok I’m pretty sure even I could get most of those liner locks to fail his spine whacks segment. But that’s a serious original design flaw in liner locks, not imho manufacturing quality. Also a couple of Benchmade Axis failed Cold Steel’s in+house challenge tests spine whack portion - right away - even though a second, spare, did spectacularly well on dead weight hang.
@JohnB-dr8sk
@JohnB-dr8sk Жыл бұрын
@@mdubb4855 Thank you M. Yeah, I also think the extra weight of longer blades means that more force and shock are occurring during wacks on the brick and steel pole. And long blades that are a 1/4" thick like the Ontario Marine Raider Bowie and SP5 Bowie and the large TOPS survival blades probably hit with tremendous force, which causes them to eventually fail quicker than shorter, lighter blades. I guess the moral of the story is that of you want a truly indestructible survival blade, get one that has a blade under 5" with well tempered mid-level steel like 1095, 1075, 12c27, 80crV2, 420HC, 4116, AUS8, AUS10, 8cr13MOV, etc. I will have to give a shoutout to one supersteel so far in Joe's tests- S35VN. It did pretty well overall and might be an option for guys who are just stuck on edge retention but still want a pretty tough knife. Regards, John

@@joex You're welcome Joe! Was really happy to see you test this blade as I have always suspected it would be tough. I think the Outdoorsman Lite version would also do well and would be tougher than Cold Steel's SK-5 and San Mai III SRK. It does have a "bone breaker" grind on the back of the blade though, which might weaken it some, Either way, would love to see how it would perform. Keep up the good work!

I just bought a Joker knife in this steel and after watching this video I feel a lot more positive about the steel. It’s quite tough for a cheap steel. A lot of people don’t get what you are doing with these tests but I get it and I appreciate it. It’s great to know the capability of a steel/heat treatment and to know which blades are prone to chipping and breakouts even if it is under mass abuse. The thing is that multiple small abuses over the life time of a knife could possibly reflect the mass abuse you do in 30 mins. I’m glad you are tough enough to ignore the negative purist comments or the flat out flamers and trolls

@@sei_asagiri Tantos are unbelievably overrated thanks to the katana-worship people have when in reality katanas are inferior to every other working sword, they slice on one side, break if they were actually used to stab, they are top-heavy and slower to use than a longsword/rapier. @@mdubb4855 Yeah, it was kind of a mystery for a while. 12c27 is a better steel overall but not as stain resistant as 4116. Both are really tough and easy to sharpen though. I think the higher stain resistance of Vic's 4116 is probably better for the type of use most Vic owners will use their blades for. Both the Swedes and the Swiss have excellent heat treats either way.

I think Krupp Theissen does a good job with 4116. It’s highly corrosion resistant so that coupled with sharp edge makes pocket knives from 4116 very good, imho, “carry often, use infrequently or never,” knives. Conversely, it’s a good steel for our second pocket knife for breaking down cardboard, easy to resharpen. If can afford it, I prefer at least AUS10 for a bugout knife that I might not be able to resharpen for a while, but I really hope I’m not reduced to using my pocket knife to open cans of food in abandoned supermarkets when the zombie apocalypse comes (there are cheap 12gram army can openers for that). And no way am I going to hike to a national park to live off the land. Abandoned supermarkets in major cities FTW.

I'm starting to see a pattern. It seems the cheap knives have the toughest steel. The question to ask is what am I really getting for the extra money? You've proven it's not toughness. I've heard many claim 3v was super tough. I sure didn't see that. I think I'll stay with budget knives.

Scalping, it's really just basic metallurgy, which is why the supersteel myth about it being the toughest was just that -- a myth. Simpler steels are tougher in their grain structure. Supersteels hold an edge longer but are more brittle. The US Military long ago figured this out. They had A2 steel to use for their military blades all the way back to the 1930s, but through testing, they found that properly tempered 1095 was the best overall combination of toughness, ease of sharpening in the field, and edge holding. We really see this with Joe's tests of the classic Kabar in 1095, Glock Knife in 1095, and Mora's 1095 blades. All of them held up amazingly well. German 80CrV2 is another awesome steel like this. And good medium carbon stainless steels like 4116, 12c27, AUS8, AUS10, and Gerber's 420HC are also really tough but also easy to sharpen like 1095.

Hey Joe. I did not expect anything close from this knife! That is awesome! About the tip, there is misunderstanding. People think that tanto or american tanto are made for better penetration but that is not true. They are made for better slice and to have stronger tip. That corner between tip edge and main edge is made to easier make wounds with lighter chop slice. Of course that not gonna help you that much when someone have body armor or something.. But against jacket will help you. Stronger tip doesn't mean better penetration but harder breaking. Was it significantly better? I don't know. You testing so you will be able to tell us. About testing. I know that you are careful guy but i saw few times these blades almost hit you in leg when you do something like bottle cuting (02:50), and i guess that is not problem with small knives because you loose almost all energy in that moment when that get contact with your leg. But i would like if you change stance when you do this kind of chopping/slice motions with bigger and heavier blades, just for your safety and our entertainment. About gun, i hope that your government doesn't know where you live and who are you cause i really like that part! I know that you are somewhere in Eu and im sure that you are not allowed to use gun in your place like that. So be careful and don't tell us who you are and where you live haha And once more, man... I did not expect this from this knife! I was sure that he will roll as crazy and that you gonna break him much sooner... Awesome knife!

I have both. The Kobun is AUS8 but it's thinner and weaker than the Tanto Lite. The Kobun is a great concealed fixed blade in states where you can legally conceal it, but the Tanto Lite is a much better survival blade. Thick blade, much larger beefier handle, longer blade, etc. The Outdoorsman Lite in 4116 is probably a better overall blade for general survival knife use though and it's the same price as the Tanto Lite.

Saw that this was part of a new line that uses 4116, manufactured in China from a brand that certainly has s good share of misses in their hit and miss lineup and set expectations in the basement. But it did fine for the price. And it made it to the rod. Turned out to be one to demonstrate what high flexibility can (and cant - see car stab performance) do.

For now it seems like budget CS knives from China ship with 8Cr and from Taiwan with 4116. I was worried that the “unnamed China mill” making 8Cr might not match up to the highly regarded Krupp Theissen mill providing the steel used in Taiwan, but based on the tests here (SR1 Lite, this and other 4116 tests) they both perform far in excess of my expectations and really well compared to hotter brands/formulas. BTW it is my understanding that Theissen has actually been operating a steel mill in PRC so that while the 4116 is a German formula from a German owned mill, it’s made in China LOL,meaning in either case we are getting mainlander steel. The 8Cr mill is just an operator we still don’t know anything about. My hope is that behind the scenes, GSM the new owner of CS will watch its subcontractors’ quality as closely as Lynn Thompson and Andrew Demko did. (Since Demko sources his 20.5 from a Taiwan subcontractor I’m sure he knows who the best subcontractors are, but he8s not talking. Anyone hoping for a Hogue quality American mini factory will have to wait.

@Ve-suvius

@alinnimeni3789 Жыл бұрын
@@Ve-suvius Yeah, but while the handle can take a bullet sometimes, the edge can't take some car stabbing.... It should be a balance, invest more in the blade and the tip- the handle is easy to be bullet proof but the edge is tricky.... Moreover, you need the knife for the blade primarly , not for the handle 🤣

@@alinnimeni3789 The CS Outdoorsman Lite would have done the cardoor stabbing better. Same knife, different tip. It's all about tip geometry regarding stabbing efficiency. CPM 3V steel chipped like a mother when doing the car stabs. The 4116 steel held up way better.
