I have a USA 4MAX. It's over 7 Years old and has been open and closed thousands of time. Heavily used and that Tri ad locking mechanism is as solid/ tight as the day I got it new. Good luck wearing it out

For me the real value of the triad lock is that it is built to compensate for wear over time. Sure, it's not realistic to go batoning with a folding knife, but realistic hard use can still cause play over many years.

The Tri-Ad lock is my favorite lock. Not just for the strength alone. Also for the best detent, and the fact that you are never going to accidentally press any unlocking button. (You have to really mean it when you unlock the Tri-Ad, unlike some button locks, and you have to really mean it when you open the knife, as it won't open unintentionally, unlike some weak-detent fidget knives, especially ones with flippers.) Although pommel-striking is not something I would do under any normal EDC use case, I like the fact that the Tri-Ad will stay locked during a pommel strike even when Atlas and Axis will not (according to test videos I have seen where they come unlocked). I wish Cold Steel would make more models or variants with the Tri-Ad. I would buy them. For example, a Voyager with no difference from current Voyagers except a thinner scale in G10. And a knife just like the 4Max Scout except with 120 thou blade stock instead of 190 thou. I would buy those knives in a heartbeat. I would buy several of each in different scale colors.

Great Video Bro. Myself, I own Knives with both locks. I must admit, when it comes to the Mega Folders, myself, I trust the Andrew Demko Tri-Ad Lock more than I do the GSM, Cold Steel, Atlas-Lock or any other Folding Knife Locks. But, for regular SDUEDC Folders, I like to carry Knives I can Fidget with, also. That's when I like fun Lock types like the Atlas-Lock. :-) I wouldn't do any batoning or any real heavy-duty tasks with any fun, Fidgeting style Locks. Why? Most don't self-adjust like the Tri-Ad and will develop blade play. Also, with more parts involved with the function of the lock, there is more of a chance that one of those parts will deform. Where as, the Tri-Ad can self-adjust and do heavy-duty tasks without developing blade play. So, for me, it depends on the task I need the Knife to be able to perform. I absolutely luv both of these Lock types for different reasons. Great discussion Video, Bro! :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)

When i unlock my Cold Steel folders one handed i just kinda point them downward and slowly raise the knife up, then readjust my fingers and bam its closed one handed lol. Good video 👍🔪⚔️🗡️.

It's not more parts it's just the spring pressure is not strong enough to keep the lock shut when shock or fast enough movement is applied to these parts. The mass of the locking bar is then stronger than the force of the spring holding it shut.

Thank you for the in-depth education. Now I will have to add a Cold Steel Atlas locking one to my rookie collection. Mayhem probably.

Atlas is a good lock but it needs refinement. I found that the lighter duty versions of the lock (ie - the FRN handled Engage) has blade play. The Shark lock that inspired it has a much better lockup.

Actually yes I noticed the same thing, it's rock-solid on the Mayhem but feels loose on the lightweight Engages.

A Voyager XL with the atlas lock would be amazing!

If the Tri-Ad lock is stronger, that's what I want.

So its pretty much like an bolt lock/compression lock from spyderco mixed in with an axis lock.

I have both. Triad lock all the way. All atlas locks I’ve had ALL had some sort of blade play. I trust triad over all period
