A knife review to see what Bowie is more dominant. With a special guest star, a Hen & Rooster stag Bowie

I love a quality blade like Randall, Martin of Texas , Treeman and so on. For everyday use I have a Case Bowie and a Muela Magnum 26. The Case has been a great camp chore knife for around 18 years. Cold steel for me has been both a hit and a miss at times. Hen and Rooster I have had good results from and their early knifes are well made and remind me a bit of Puma and Linder of Germany. I also have to give a honorable mention to Schrade SCHF45 and the SCHF28 for great camp knives. I love your humor but could handle videos that safety wise would make me cringe a bit less. All that being said awesome channel and keep up the brilliant product reviews! Someone who actually uses the knives can tell us so much more than the ones who purchase a knife to be kept as a safe queen. I even have used a few of my Randall's. I hear a few collector's crying . Anyway you have another fan of your channel.

Dear Donny B All Day, I can understand your love affair with the Case XX. I don't own one, but have watched you use and tell about it. I would have to agree, great knife. I am just getting started into knife collecting, but I have listened to you about several knives that I now own. For example, The Cold Steel Trail Master, The Cold Steel Laredo Bowie, and I have coming in a few days, The Cold Steel Wild West Bowie. I want thank you for all your hard work and honest comparisons of these knives. I am glad you put into your reviews what you do, because it helps me decide what I want next and why. Someday I hope to have a Case XX Bowie, but for now I think you have helped me pick some really great knives. Keep up the good knife video's. Thank you. RLB

Case Tru-Sharp is Case's name they give to Latrobe 420HC. It's just like Cold Steel's Carbon V was 0170-6 from Sharon Steel, Case uses 420HC and just gives it a proprietary name to give it a "cool" factor. While some dismiss 420HC, it's an excellent hard use steel because the toughness allows it to have more give than a higher carbon stainless like 440C.
@DonnieBAllDay5 жыл бұрын
Ahhhhhh! They sure do, do it right.

Great vid! Aside from the personal fact that Im a Cold Steel man, I must admit the Case is an amazing knife too... if I continue to aggregate blades, a Case is in the future. Id have one already if Case offered the bowie in carbon steel. The Case has a constant curve from tip to guard, which makes for a good cutter. Still, for chopping generally it's hard to beat a good kukhri.. Thanks for the show, enjoyed it! Dunne

I personally think the western Bowie is better than the Case Bowie I've owned both the western Bowie I have is from 1965 and made in Boulder Colorado. I guess it depends what u do with your knife I use mine on wood chopping for camp use . I definitely prefer carbon steel over stainless the most overrated knife I've had was Randall I've had a dozen Randalls and chipped most of them .the worst knife I had was a stainless Buck Bowie junk outside. Overall the western and the Imperial kit Carson Bowie have out lasted any knifes I've owned by far

I've an unused 1968 (version #4) Western Bowie. Quite nice at 9.25" blade, 14.5" overall. And yes, its tang carries all the way and around the pommel/handle hook...dangle sheath. ~ Gifted from my stepfather, I stowed it away because I thought the chrome version was just a novelty knife/toy. I don't know of its original cost, but a 200.00+ knife now, depending on such buyers in the world. Time to start using it. My whole family of clowns would most likely let it rot if inherited. (-:

Friend of mine inherited his late Dad's v44 of ww2 vintage.. The word was that on the originals at least, the black synthetic grip was made of the same material as bowling balls- well-nigh indestructable. Gotta love ALL those blades, especially the Hen&Rooster... of the three my choice would have to go with the Case.. good usable knife with an easier to manipulate blade, and good steel. You throw a damn good knife there, never seen that level of skill with "non-dedicated" knives... Ive never pursued throwing on account of being trained in the "real" world to NEVER give an opponent your knife! Good sport tho and you are good at it!
@DonnieBAllDay4 жыл бұрын
The good thing about throwing a knife in combat is when you throw one close enough to Chase it. If I'm within 5 yd of my enemy and I through the blade as soon as it sticks in I'm taking it back out and slicing his throat. And doing so with the case means his head is coming off.
Got the Case XX on my "To Get List" now... maybe by Christmas 2021! 😉

Hey DBad, Did I hear right ? Did you say that the Case is made from German 4116 stainless ? If I've heard right, that 4116 is not even close to 1095 , I'd say is rather related to 420hc that Buck / Gerber use ... It's a decent steel (I'm NOT a steel snob, by any means) but I'm really surprised that it was holding so well ... Of course, it might have some extra points due to heat treatment (?!)- stuff like that - but otherwise should be pretty similar ... Just for the record : I managed to (stupidly) cut my left middle finger - almost to the bone - yeah, pretty smart, I know - with the CS Range Boss (made from 4034 ss - related to that 4116) - trying to do some penetration tests : yeah, that thing penetrated real good ... So yeah, is a "real steel" ... Oh, that CS Range Boss is my edc blade - I really like that thing ! I've just started to treat it more respectfully !

Try an Uncle Henry bowie against these. Uncle Henry bowies surprised me unbelievably and I have some very nice and expensive bowies. I was surprised at the performance and for the buck represents tremendous value ( if they are still making the same quality). I use Uncle Henry for common tasks in order to keep the wear and aesthetic factors of the nicer ones preserved. The only drawback is the goofy antler imitation handles made of pretty durable plastic. I am considering making nicer handles out of real Elk or Deer or maybe desert ironwood. I would like to see you do some comparisons in testing the Uncle Henry against some of your other bowies. It would certainly be interesting to your fan base ! Give a cheap knife a chance to compete against the expensive boys. There are other cheap bowies that may hold up in competition. My Uncle Henry Bowie cost me less than twenty bucks. Tractor Supply sometimes has no name knives that are incredible, sometimes even bowies, for sale between ten to twenty dollars. I have a kind of multi tool shovel, axe, machete and a couple of other things combined in one tool design that I prize and bought a second one because I liked it so much. I used it to literally rip, chop and cut a huge fatwwood stump with it and after eight hours of continual use it was nearly as sharp as when I started. I touched up the edges and brought it to razor sharp, ready to go at it again. I harvested a lot of fatwood that day from that stump. Nothing came close to the performance, no axe, hatchet, large knife, nothing.I have swedish axes and hatchets that didn't come close. I wish they would sell more of them, I would buy them up and use them for bartering knives, axes, E-tools and such but primarily knives. Oh well, take care and thank you for your excellent review and enthusiasm.

First off, glad you chimed in. My grandmother was a Clancey from Cork. Next, it depends on what you are eating them for. All 3 blades are more than capable users. So I guess it comes down to pros and cons. The problem is there's not to many cons. The Case and CS both have polished blades, better for food use. The Case has a synthetic grip, the KA-BAR has a round. Neither an actual problem, but splitting hairs here. I guess for me, I would say Case, CS, KA-BAR. But if your asking for you, maybe CS, Case, KA-BAR. Honestly, you can't go wrong with any. Put pics of all 3 on your screen and just stare at them until one jumps out.

That will be an interesting to see. I own the CS Wild West, the Bear & Son Gold Rush, and an original Western W49, made in 1981, I think. If I was in a defensive situation, I would prefer having the W49. The wood handles are shaped oh so right. A Case XX is on the want list. I like that ornamental look to it.

Cold steel notoriously has a problem with loose guards when they are made by windless. Cult of Athena tells their customers they no longer accept returns cause it’s so bad lol. I am a fanboy of the folding knives, Japanese made and Taiwan made knives.

Thanks so much for this one, very informative and now i know my direction after watching this and the GH old West vid...for what I need right now, just solo drill and self defense, gonna first get the expendable and the brown handle GH, those as you've shown (and I had no way of knowing before your vids) are perfectly adequate for serious self defense and would be beautiful to work out with. I have wood chopper blades, I might get the .ca wild west or case kater. Got a friend in Rio that makes some incredible Bowie knives you should see, also. Anyway,thanks so much, I would have bought that Wild West first, but it's down on the list sime, and you have done me a great service. Thanks, brother!

aah man this dwarf bowie has got nothing on the Cold Steel one, not a specific fan of cold steel but you can really tell the difference on first sight, lets compare: The Cold steel bowie has the classic western cowboy bowie look, if you go for that then the choice is obvious The cold steel bowie has a full tang handle, better size & more reliable for use since the handle is full tang Overall this XX bowie looks like a knife that an Arab would have, looks more like a scimitar knife than a bowie. The cold steel bowie holds a better price (at least from what I've seen on the market). And lastly that scimitar looking knife looks like something that you would put in a glass case and never touch again (expensive steak knife) since it will look ruined if you scratch that handle even a bit as to the cold steel bowie it looks like a knife that you can beat the holy shit out of and still look good in a glass case. Overall its a matter of personal taste but the choice for me is more than obvious, cheers.
@DonnieBAllDay5 жыл бұрын
Looks can be deceiving. It's hard to find a western style Bowie more durable that the Case. The edge retention on the Case is better and the grip ergonomics are also better. Another miss you had regards the tang. The case is also a full tang. It's a full hidden, CS is full exposed. The guard set and shape is better on the Case as well. As far as blade shapes, remove the grips and they're very similar. You say one looks more authentic but you forget that one was actually being made at the time they were made famous. So witch one really has the classic Western Bowie look?

Yeah, it's very tight. I have to use a canted grip. Put it in your hand and roll the bottom of the blade toward you until the first part of the fingers wedge in. Another easy fix is simply sanding down some of the inner grip at the pommel
