That guy knows what he is welding and how to do it, unlike the critics. It looks like a cooling water jacket that has been split by frost. Most of the commentators below are criticizing the repair as if a full strength butt weld is required; they would take at least 4 times as long (plus time to re-read the Boys Big Book of Welding) and would want to charge 4 times as much. Watch and learn, guys, instead of criticizing a guy who has probably forgotten more about welding than you will ever know.

It may be, that this guy is a good welder. I'm sorry, but this is a bad repair of cast iron. I do this job (cast iron welding) since over 35 years, I have never seen something like that shit. I hope, this work ist just for himself and not for a client.
@gyrojomo8 жыл бұрын
Thomas, if you look at the comments, some dont even understand the principle behind cold TIG welding. All the weld had to be capable of is holding the water in with a bit of thermal growth and some vibration. Its not a structural weld. Cooling water jackets are sometimes repaired with nonmetallic compounds like Chemiweld.
@georgiojansen77587 жыл бұрын
his comment in german says, follow the welding procedure and some important detail is not shown or mentioned, stays his secret or you find it yourself..now anybody know this secret??

My understanding is that tig welding cast iron requires technique and knowledge of what metals to use. I sure would like to learn how to make cast iron repairs with my powertig welder.

Sorry gyrojomo, but porosity is no fucking good no matter what. You should never weld cast without pre or post-heat. I don't care what new gay bullshit they come up with, it's crap compared to the tried and true. Also he should be dabbing his filler a little more than his tungsten, this video is a joke. Learn how to prop your hand instead of waving it around like a fucking fairy

I have full respect for the determination and ingenuity of this man, not to mention his patience. Yes, the armchair experts will take the bait, that was inevitable. But I can't help thinking that a little more finesse - like a vise and maybe a simple test fixture would have been a benefit. I watched it end-to-end though. Mike

Controversial welding practices aside, it looks like there's something very special about that welding table! Anyway, nothing is more controversial than welding cast iron. I have an old book about only this topic! Unfortunately the best practice of the time involved a lot of charcoal fire and asbestos sheet, building a temporary furnace and so on. People used huge torches (high power, also physically large if only to keep you away from all that hot stuff). Probably works too, but... I live in Florida where it's already hot!

Right there with you. I've been welding 37 years now and I've never seen someone do a worse job than this on cast iron. Dirty material, no preheat, way too much welding in between stops, not paying any attention to interpass temp,TIG welding when you should be using stick, He didn't even try to dig the crack out of the metal. Not even drilling a hole at the end of the crack. He just threw a cover pass right over it. Wow. I hope the people that brought that part to him didn't pay him for his work.
