I drove the Saracen and the Humber one ton pig between 73 -76. The pigs armament was up graded many times but still had a one ton axle. Many axles were broken on speed bumps if you went over them too fast.

I was a PIG commander back in Belfast 79 and even got to drive it on a rare occasion also sat in the back of the Saracen often in Armagh 77, the Saracen had a beautiful noise from its engine

From the newsreel of time i think that high pitched whine of the engines *was that same with both the Saracen and Pig?, was quite iconic of the Troubles. The Pig esp always interested me as the iconic vehicle too - rather like in South Africa where the Casspir was the same during the rioting in the townships in the final days of Apartheid

Another great video. Perhaps a more in-depth video about the Ferret, Saracen, and Pig sometime soon?

Something different about this episode of chieftains ‘inside the hatch’ but I can’t quite put my finger on it 🤔

Wish I had been able to get inside the hatch haha. Hopefully this year we'll get some more vehicle videos out!

@@TheArmourersBench yes..its a pity that more Museums dont allow the likes of the Chieftains and Lindybeige (and yrself) to actually get inside rather than just have to peer in from outside. I am sure they would say well if we let one person etc..but in reality its controllable. My Dad (RIP) said that when Bovington was set up people were allowed to get in but had too many incidents with hatch covers etc

FYI the Humber Pig is a 6 ton APC, in this case the MKII, as designated by the bridge plate on the front.

Great video! I will definitely be checking out this channel more in the future! Recently I've been obsessed with the British Cold War era vehicles, especially Alvis Saladin, Saracen and Stalwart. I was wondering whether you could direct me to some documentation or books that would allow me to learn more about how these vehicles were utilised. I'm not really interested in the technical specs (Wikipedia is fine for that), nor do I think that their utilisation in the Operation Banner during The Troubles is very representative of their intended role in a full scale conflict. Is there some literature that would allow me to learn about how these vehicles were to be deployed and used (for example by the BAOR) on a battalion or regimental level? I'm mostly interested in their dispositions, intended tasks, number of vehicles in a unit, tactics in assault and defence etc. I know that the correct answer in the event of the war with the Soviet Union would be the use of the tactical nukes, but I hope that there were some actual manuals on how to use these vehicles in combat. :P Thanks in advance and keep up the great work! Sincerely, RosoMC EDIT: Sorry about my slightly jumbled post, I'm not a native English speaker. :)

That Pig has every add on ever invented for it except the ATGM system of the RAC and Wings/Krem mesh for NI. I can tell you now that Pigs in NI did not look like that and Pigs in BAOR in the 1960's did not look like that either. In fact, no Pig ever looked liked that.

@@TheArmourersBench Only a few hundred of that version were made before the driver side hatches were changed to a more triangular shape. (I won't bore anyone here with too many details) If you want a deep dive into them I would suggest having a look at the Daimler Ferret Scout Car group son FB. I can suggest a couple of names who are the experts. The vehicles themselves have served all over the world, with some still in service.
@TheSussexpillbox3 жыл бұрын
Why is the Pig in fantasy paint scheme colours, is it now a ship? It's like a jumble-sale of incorrect period nonsense. As it is a MK2 pig, you would not have spotlights, fuel holders, and a LMG. Also, it has more smoke dischargers than your average main battle tank. Two minutes into a riot (which is what the MK2 is for) and that would be trashed.

Yes wondering that too...someone's poor attempt at doing disruptive pattern on a vehicle that in the main remained in deep bronze green for most of its life. Some were painted IRR green but , at the point when most were sold off from AVSD Ludgershall, the majority were still bronze green.
