Government "we need as much control over the project as possible, including huge committees and tiny design considerations". Also government " we are cancelling this project as it has become too expensive". The one thing that is a constant objective reality is that government interference causes overruns and failures. If politicians stayed in their lane, life would be so much better.

The cancellation of the TSR2 was one of the greatest blunders in aviation history. When bureaucrats and politicians interfere with some of the greatest inventions of our time, it makes me physically ill. The potential of the TSR2 can never be understated. They didn’t even spare one for research, or for a museum. Such a waste.

The Swedish J-37 Viggen had the same landing gear as the TSR2 and it worked very well. The Saab 37 first flew on 8 February 1967 and was delivered to the air force in 1971. The Saab 37 was developed under a Swedish Labor government and was a very successful aircraft that became the backbone of the Swedish Air Force for 35 years. Development began in 1952 (before the Saab 35 Draken had even completed its first flight) but was delayed until 1961 due to disagreement on the cost increase for the entire project. Curiously, mostly due to the influence of the British politician Duncan Sandys, who declared in 1957 that Britain would not develop any more manned fighter aircraft, but instead focus all development on robots.

@neilturner67494 ай бұрын
Realistically, it was far ahead of any operational effectiveness that could possibly have been achieved in that time period. It wasn’t until the late ‘70s (and digital computers) that the kind of systems TSR2 was designed for were finally perfected.

So sad what happened to TSR2. Perhaps it was inevitable, with spiralling costs, increasing delays, and most importantly, a technology too far ahead of its time. But there was no reason to destroy the whole project, they could have kept the planes and plans ‘on ice’. Something fishy there. It is clear the technology and role of TSR2 was a direct rival to F1-11. I bet the Americans never openly connected purchasing F1-11 with scrapping TSR2, it would have been hinted at, no more. It’s called deniability, for both sides. But slippery Jenkins and rubbery Healey knew exactly what they were doing.

In actual fact they managed to preserve the second TSR2 prototype which can be seen on static display in the hanger at IWM Duxford, I've actually stood underneath and touched the aircraft, the first time I touched her I had to fight back tears of frustation and anger that such a beautiful, world beating and for its time hyper advanced aircraft could have been treated so woefully by the vested interests of the political class. Harold Wilsons Labour government in my opinion commited treason against the British people over the way they treated the whole affair. I did hear a rumour a few years ago now that the American aerospace industry and its vested interests were behind it all as they had nothing that could even come close so took clandestine measures to wipe out all traces of the aircrafts existence. ..........which is possibly why after spending millions and millions of pounds of public tax money developing the thing to then order that every last part of its inception from jigs, toolings and airframes to even the blue prints had to be destroyed utterly with indecent haste - totally unheard of in British military history. Treason to my mind. Mountbatton doesnt come out of this well either was HE copping a back hander as well ???

I can’t imagine that TSR2, had it been allowed to develop further, would’ve been anything other than an unmitigated disaster in the manner of the later Nimrod AEW programme. In other words - constantly evolving mission requirements and technology that looks good on paper but can’t be made to actually work without enormous added expenditure and years of painful trouble-shooting that leave airframes sitting around non-operational, and are no longer cutting-edge nor mission-viable by the time they’re operational.

If you destroy your own aircraft industry and become reliant on someone else's, then you are compromised as a nation. You are held at the whim of another concerning aircraft, parts, and technical know how. You are financially burdened through the payment to other governments of funds the scale of which they can dictate. The TSR2 was technologically far in advance of its time. As such it was a threat to the US aircraft industry in terms of international sales, especially the F-111. And that is why the US representatives came to take a look. They made out a report, and that sparked the US government to stand on the UK governments toes. That is why it was cancelled, and all the rest is hogwash. The TSR2 cost over runs were simply a smoke screen. The UK were world leaders in aircraft development. The politicians flushed the UK aircraft industry down the drain, and they did not help either during development due to their extensive meddling and mismanagement. It was a similar story with the Nimrod, where development costs became so stupid that the US AWACS was seen as a cheaper option. Again mismanagement of resources by government and over runs leading to sky high costs. But it was not all the governments fault. These were the consequences of providing 'jobs for the boys' with carte blanch hand outs, the boys being the aircraft industry hierarchy who were only too willing to line their own pockets at the expense of the UK taxpayer rather than being closely monitored to maintain deadlines and provide value for money. No wonder most of the technical expertise left the UK to work in the US. The cost to their government was secondary to the product, and they were prepared to back their projects to the end. The same stunt was pulled by the UK government regarding breaking the sound barrier. Farnham was well advanced with that and development of the aircraft to do the job. Work on that was stopped and all details handed over entirely to the US, who consequently went on to break the sound barrier much to the dismay of our own people. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. And there they were back in that time actually placing adverts on TV pleading with skilled professionals not to leave the UK. The so called 'brain drain'. And why not go elsewhere to use your skills when the UK government repeatedly consigned the UK from being the best and leaders in the world to become a technically second rate backwater bowing down to others even for our own air defense, and throwing many into unemployment. Yeah, batting for Britain, right......or battering Britain more like. Hell, even with the Tornado and Typhoon 2 the build and development is not our own. Those are UK jobs that were flushed away by successive governments forever. Ridiculous. The only three aircraft that we managed to save for ourselves from the 1960's onwards seem to be the Blackburn Buccaneer, the Harrier, and Concorde. And for those who disbelieve, just what military aircraft do we solely manufacture in the UK today? Any? An interesting thought.

The tornado was a poor interceptor and poor fighter. The swing wing technology was outdated when it arrived with The us abandoning it for fly by wire technology. The RAF should have bought the F15 or F16 or F18 or F14 depending on budget and role.
