Me and Angelo this time will explore a unique place for Malta, a run-down nuclear shelter!
The structure, dug into the side of Rihana valley was intended as an alternative command post for the British in case of a nuclear fallout during the Cold War.
The shelter was built deep into the rock to keep radiation at bay and was equipped with a filtration system to provide its occupants with clean air. However, after the British left the island the shelter became a haven for vandals and has become dilapidated and dangerous.
Over the years, the walls have been extensively vandalised and it is thought that the bunker has been used by Satanists. The ceiling, which is made of asbestos, has been smashed, exposing the material's carcinogenic fibres.
The mayor, who is familiar with the shelter, recalled rumours from his youth that nuclear weapons were stored nearby. He remembered military trucks, carrying cargo covered in tar-paulin, driving by at night es-corted by heavily armed commandoes.
The council now intends rehabilitating the place and the garden above, which was once one of the largest on the island.
CAUTION - Health Risk - This place has Asbestos

Wow, what a fascinating place. It is such a shame that this place has not been preserved and has instead been allowed to fall into such a bad state of disrepair and vandalism. It would be amazing if this was restored and opened to the public. Thank you so much for showing to us Pierre 👍🏼

Hi Pierre & Angelo, thanks for this interesting vlog. It was informative although a bit breath taking too. It's such an enormous safe place dug down in the bed rock with lot of space which had all necessities as well. Shame for so much vandalism, hope education will flourish in more many ways. Thanks and well done, will look for the next one. 👍👍

Vera prosit. I enjoy watching your vlogs. Very Informative, educational and interesting. It is a pity that such heritage and history is left to rot. In other countries they would make this bunker a tourist attraction and not let it be vandalised. Keep it up.

Many thanks for another very enjoyable tour. I really hope the Mosta Local council do something, and if not at least seal the entrances to stop furhter damage. Maybe in time someone will come forward to restore the place to its former state. There cannot be many such shelters still exisitng. I saw a documentary of one discouvered in the UK and they have now opened it against payment to the Public as a museum.

Thanks Pierre for another great Vlog. The nuclear shelter came around as a result of the cold war, and is situated below what used to be Malta's Civil Defence HQ. The area was decommissioned as part of the British Services rundown that occurred in the 1970s. I hail from Mosta and first explored the place in the late 1980s. It was mostly devoid of graffiti back then, and some wooden doors were still in place. The CD Centre was transformed into a trade school and now houses MCAST's Art & Design Centre. Little surprise hence for the explosion of graffiti which is indeed shameful. The entrances were sealed many times over the years to disallow access, but vandals clearly got the better of that. Our justice system would work much better if people found guilty of minor infringements were bound to do community work rather than fined, and such work includes the removal of graffiti and trash that litters so many historical sites! This place is unique since very little investment in new defensive / military structures was carried out after WW2. I am aware of 3 other underground postwar sites which all served the same purpose - that of housing emergency flour mills in case of a food shortage resulting from some war. They are located in the north of the island and one has been restored along with all of its machinery. Coming back to Mosta, the Gnien tal-Gharusa (pronounced Arusa) garden was originally part of the Civil Defence compound which was turned into a public garden in the late 70s - early 80s. Gharusa actually means fiancee' and is a reference to an old Maltese legend pertaining to Mosta's folklore. According to the tale, a bride was kidnapped during her marriage ceremony during one of the many raids by North African corsairs from Torre Cumbo, which is on the other side of town. This incident led to the creation of a famous ballad and hence the garden's namesake. More details can easily be found on a number of websites by simply searching L-Gharusa tal-Mosta.

Also the 90 degree turns has to do with the radiation from a nuclear blast. A simple 90 degree turn reduces the radiation level. You see this sort of dog leg arrangement on the fueling floors of commercial nuclear reactors. Once you go around the dog-leg the radiation levels go up.

The graffiti is mostly in English due to the influence of international pop 'culture' tv on immature brats and is disgraceful.
