Mission, return to Holy Loch for resupply. Secondary objectives: sink enemy naval vessels or submarines on the way. How exactly? Take all of the fuel from the reactor and hope there's enough material there to make a big bang when two guys run at each other with half of it each?

I regularly take the Permit class to about 1400 ft. and nose in at 90 degree to the target to reduce cross section in these cases.

That's basically what they are. . . Only late model mk 14s had wake following capability so they where actually superior.

@@urishima Well to be clear all the Mk.16 is is an early Mk.14 with the reliability issues solved and a slightly larger overall warhead fitted . . only in real life, the Mk.16 could run a pattern and the later Mk.14's gained wake homing capability nither of which is present in the in-game Mk.16.

Mid WW2 torpedoes has a nasty habit of not exploding, it took years to figure out and alive the problems with the Mk 16

The Mk 16 was an upgraded version of the Mk 14 (WW2) that had all of those issues figured out. By the time the Mk 16 entered service, the Mk 14 was reliable enough to stay in reserve until the 70s.

Not only are they faster, but in most cases they'll one-shot whatever they hit. With a lucky aim a whole salvo of Mk 16 torpedoes will sink half a fleet.

The game is accurate with regard to the Mark 16 torpedo: they never had wake homing. During their entire service lives from mid-WWII to 1975, they only had gyroscopic guidance.

Not quite, the Mk.16 had the ability to pattern run which it doesn't in-game. That alone could make the difference in its usage but instead, it's just a reliable Mk.14 with a slightly bigger warhead and less functionality.

I'm not entirely sure but aren't you actually harder to detect if you're closer to the layer rather than 1000ft? At least if I'm remembering my school physics and total internal reflection correctly

On noise yes, active sonar however can mess up the works a little with how it's modelled.

Actually - I'm curious why you wouldn't just run a full load Mk37s instead of mixing in those Mk17s

Speed, there is a large number of surface ships that can just out run the mk 37. Having a few 16's can be useful as annoying as they are.

Unfortunately the US never used wake following on the Mark 16 or any other torpedo. They were exclusively gyroscope guided from their introduction until they were phased out. I have no idea where you heard they used wake homing, it only appeared on russian devices. It feels like a WWII torpedo because it is. BUORD decided that they didn't need guided anti-shipping torpedoes, one of many terrible plays by them.
