If the mark 48 acquires a target, then loses track on that target, it’s programmed to circle until it reacquires a sound target. The hope is that the 48 will reacquire the target it was initially launched at, by circling back to it’s loss of contact point.

The Mk 48 will circle when it has acquired a target but can't climb or dive quickly enough to attack it directly.

Is that what you think happened in Ep 7? (It doesn't seem to be the situation.)
@GoSlash274 ай бұрын
@@TortugaPower Absolutely. That's why you kept getting "torpedo in the water" calls when there were no torpedoes coming directly at you. They had already acquired you, but were circling to get to your depth.

@@GoSlash27 Why do you think it couldn't "climb or dive quickly enough to attack" the Song submarine, its original target? (Again referring to Ep 7). [edit: I can understand the snaking pattern when it needs too quick of an ascent/descent -- agree on that, and seen that before plenty. But in Ep 7 the issue is that the Mk48 began circling continuously, seemingly at random, during its move to the enemy sub]

On a Seawolf, there are 8 wires (1 each tube) and you can use them all at once.

In the last episode, the first Mk48 "acquired" a noisemaker that the Ming had dropped and then started searching. Maybe arming the torpedoes further away would help keep them from circling back? As for the second one, maybe navigate AWAY from loose, armed torpedoes instead of going straight towards them?

LOL I was going to mention that too about heading towards unwired active torpedoes👍

Hi Brandon. If you check the ep 7 video, ~18:00, the Mk48 has no noisemakers ahead of it when it begins looping. -- Assuming we are talking about the same one.

unless you're actively having to evade a torp, better to point the front of the ship towards the enemy so you can keep your wires. swing them out a little to avoid return fire directly at you.. on seawolf you can fire an entire load out (although I usually keep a moss in as well) from 25kyd as soon as you start the mission and then swing them in to target after you get your sonar on them.
