Inspired by the 1988 classic “Red Storm Rising”, command a nuclear submarine in a desperate attempt to prevent “mutually assured destruction” when the Cold War gets hot and WWIII begins.
You will be tasked with intercepting convoys, amphibious landings, insertion missions and battling it out with enemy warships, submarines and aircraft. Thankfully, an arsenal of wire-guided torpedoes, anti-ship and cruise missiles and the occasional SEAL team are on board to keep the Iron Curtain at bay.

Toads are well known for their underwater detection abilities, every modern navy uses them.

It is a toad array, the USN had a top secret project, (Project T.O.A.D) they discovered that the croaks of toads had a very specific frequency that can travel hundreds of miles in water. So by stringing together thousands of toads on the toad array, this croak sonar can ping enemy warships with stunning accuracy. The most difficult part is when the array is retracted all of the toads must be cared for, requiring a large terrarium housing and thousands of ants.

Pro tip: If you want to sink the enemy sub with its own torpedoes (for example Set-80s), after they fire 2-3 torpedoes your direction, wait until they are at mid-point between you and the launch sub, then fire a MOSS/decoy BACK at the enemy sub. Sometimes, the decoy/MOSS will drag the torpedoes back to its sender. It's amusing to watch enemy subs try to evade their own torpedoes, even if those torpedoes run out of fuel, you just gained 2-3 minutes to get a better firing angle/disappear/into their baffles. As a Soviet submariner in my campaigns, I sank multiple Permits and Sturgeons this way in 1984 campaign.

I do have to wonder why you never attack the Soviet merchants sailing around, they do count towards tonnage sunk and getting the highest medals in the game is very hard without sinking atleast some merchants.

You set that first torp against the Victor III to surface running. Up arrow means surface running, down arrow means ignore surface targets, and even level arrow means target anything.

"Run Level: Once enabled, the torpedo will stay at its current depth. Run Shallow: Once enabled, the torpedo will change depth to be above the layer (if there is one) and search at approximately 30 ft depth. Run Deep: Once enabled, the torpedo will change depth to be about 30 ft below the layer, or if no layer exists, search at about 350 ft depth." From the game manual. It says nothing about discriminating against target type nor location. I have also played with Dotmod and been capable of targetting submerged targets with shallow running MK 48s.

I wonder why the navies of the world have lightweight torpedo. For example it could be simple enough to put a parachute on an ADCAP and then strap it on to a P8 Poseidon. Yet the USN went with the Mk54 lightweight to be air dropped and surface ship launched. Why??? Wouldn’t they want the larger warhead, fuel capacity (and associated benefits) of the ADCAP?

Ships and planes are highly optimized, normally the warhead and range of a defensive lightweight are enough to onehit (or at the very least send an extremely clear message to piss off) any submarines they’re shooting at without taking mass away from anti-air and ship weapons. Also important is the ability to mount said torpedoes from the ship’s stocks onto a reasonably sized ASW helicopter.

If a propeller (or a turbine) is running too fast, the static pressure of the water behind the propeller is lowered considerably. This causes water to evaporate so steam bubbles appear in the wake of the ship. These bubbles quickly implode though, which is very loud, effectively giving the position of the boat to a passive sonar. The deeper a boat is, the higher the water pressure becomes. This means, that a boat in the deep will start cavitating at higher speeds, than closer to the surface. You sometimes see in cold water videos, that the player tests how fast he can go at his curent depth before cavitating and if he does, he drops the boat deeper until the boat cavitates no longer. Another effect of cavitation is damage to the propeller or the turbine, but I guess this effect is not simulated in the game.
