Of course it does. Cavitation means forming a cavity out of air under water through movement. That is what is happening to the propellers. And in fact, is not what is loud. The LOUD part is those bubbles actually imploding in on themselves due to water pressure.

Water vapour, not air. The screw speed drops the local pressure enough to allow the water to vapourize, then instantly condense back into liquid as it moves off the screw surface.

Jive and Jingles both - I struggled with this mission until I discovered a trick to it. First, sink that first surface vessel, then move to the position of it's wreck (within 20 meters off either side parallel). Because it makes so much noise, it will mask your presence. Even when you fire off your TLAMs and attract the aircraft to your position, they won't be able to get a fix on you sitting silent next to that noisy wreck. They may (50/50) drop torpedoes into the water, but those are far more likely to target the wreck than you. In my testing with this method, I've only had torpedoes dropped in once (x2 torpedoes), and both targeted the wreck over me in spite of having me in their seeker field first. As for the TLAMs, you don't actually target the naval base. Fire them all into the center of that circle on the map, and when the missiles reach that circle, they will guide in from there onto their intended targets, and you won't need to carry more than the required number of TLAMs (additional TLAMs will end up hitting targets that have already been hit.) If all goes well, after you fire off the TLAMs, the aircraft will close to your position, fail to get a fix on you, then clear off far enough for you to exit the mission (job done).

Just to shed some extra light on the cavitating for whoever is interested, when your propellor spins it creates a low pressure zone directly where the propellor blade ends. At lower pressures, water boils at a lower temperature, something a lot of people dont actually know. So when the water boils, it steam releases, and there you have your bubbles. The bubbles then pop because thats what bubbles do, and that popping is exactly what creates so much sound. When you go deeper the water pressure increases and therefore also the boiling point of the water, making you able to spin your propellor faster.

Though that doesn't explain the chipping damage on propellers that run with cavitation. Water fills cavitations much faster than it forms it, meaning the water rushing back into that lower pressure area is moving faster than the propeller. That trick can be used to blast off the bottom of a glass bottle when you hit it hard from above. The bottle moves down a little but the water's inertia leaves it behind forming the low pressure cavitation bubble. A fraction of a second later the water overcomes it's inertia and rushes back with a multiple of the speed the bottle was moving, slamming into the bottom of the glass container and ripping it clean off. Cavitation isn't just loud. It is destructive.

Don't think you are realizing it, but when you rig for ultra quiet, if you notice in the info scroll, you lose it by the maneuvering actions you're taking almost immediately. So when you comment "first thing is I rig the boat for ultra quiet", you've lost that almost immediately due to the maneuvers you're making. See the messages above the panel on the right...clear as day. Ultra quiet only sticks if you adhere to the conditions for which it can apply.

Jingles! I have advice for TLAM missions (not that I think you'll read it). I have successfully completed this mission a number of times, and have been recognized on Jive Turkey's channel as (temporarily) having the high score to beat. Succeed at TLAM missions by doing the following: 1 - after mission starts, pick a course toward the blue target circle and set a speed of 10kts. 2 - time compress for a few minutes so you can get a bit closer and load the tubes with TLAMs (if you haven't already) 3 - change your course by 180 degrees and come up to launch depth 4 - FIRE ZE MISSILES! 5 - immediately go to flank speed and reload your tubes with TLAMs 6 - when your tubes are loaded, drop back down to a safe launch speed 7 - FIRE ZE MISSILES! 8 - Flank speed again, but this time change your course. Reload tubes with TLAMs (if you have to fire any more) or torps. 9 - continue at flank for a while, then slow to 1/3 to listen for anybody chasing you. Continue alternating until you can leave combat. This technique was effective even at Elite difficulty.
@entropiated9020
@entropiated9020 7 жыл бұрын
My main point is that cavitating during this mission isn't the end of the world. It's not like the SEAL insertion mission where you have to drive all the way to the blue circle, so remaining undetected is a must. Just fire ze missiles and then boogie. This mission shouldn't take more than 5-10 mins and you can laugh at all the ineffectual torp drops behind you as you run.

Bit of an expanded explanation for cavitation: EDIT: Credit to Madness 1.0 and Jesse Lei for pointing out that the cavitation of marine propellers are indeed vapor bubbles and not strictly vacuum bubbles. From some additional research I did, it looks like they are strictly vapor bubbles, and not vacuum bubbles that have a bit of vapor seep into them before they collapse. I dealt with cavitation in a strictly vacuum "bubble" sense, and so my understanding of the situation was flawed. Therefore, I'm deleting the previous explanation (because it's wrong), and I'd like to direct everyone to Jesse Lei's comment elsewhere in the comment section. Apologies for the misinformation, folks.
@CrescentSickle
@CrescentSickle 7 жыл бұрын
What's wrong with my explanation? I did see another post that claimed that the bubbles were caused by the generation of steam due to pressure zones... but I'm pretty sure that's called supercavitation, and isn't what gives propellers away on sonar.
@steweygrrr
@steweygrrr 7 жыл бұрын
Cavitation isn't just a noise hazard either, the miniature plasma explosion generated from the bubble imploding is enough to damage the propeller blades of submarines and surface vessels if maintained over time. Ofc this is more an issue for targets...sorry, surface vessels because they spend more time moving at a speed and depth that is likely to cause cavitation for longer periods of time purely because of their mode of operation.

Pistol Shrimps (Alpheida) use cavitation as a weapon. Pretty interesting little animals, their striking appendage is held in a locked position like the hammer of a pistol by what is effectively a biological latch and ratchet system. When it strikes the latch is released and the hammer strikes the other part of the claw so fast it causes cavitation. This cavitation is quite literally enough to kill small fish and even break small glass jars. These little critters can play merry hell with sonars as well. They are *seriously* loud. Despite their size they compete with Sperm and Beluga Whales for the title of loudest animal in the sea. the cavitation bubble can reach temperatures of 5000 Kelvin and produce up to 218 decibels! So yeah, cavitation is *seriously* loud... hard on propellars as well! EDIT: Having been a Marine Biologist for almost 30 years I know more about the beasties than Cavitation :). Pistol Shrimps are not my favourite Crustaceans (that goes to Mantis Shrimps), but they are close. Amazing little animals.

Madness 1.0 Ah, did some more research, and it turns out that, very specifically, the cavitation bubbles generated by marine props are vapor-only bubbles, not vacuum bubbles like most cavitation, nor vacuum bubbles that vapor diffuses into before collapse. My mistake. I appreciate the correction.

It's worth mentioning that the 'bubbles' in cavitation are full of low pressure water vapour, and the water that rushes in to fill them can do so at supersonic speeds, hence the large amount of noise. It's not very relevant to the immediate chances of surviving an encounter, but cavitation can also cause significant erosion to the screw and surrounding stern gear. That's the context I normally come across it as a marine surveyor dealing with small pleasure vessels.

Cavitation more specifically is when a propeller spins fast enough to create a low pressure zone on the back side of each blade, this low pressure allows the water to boil. the deeper the boat the greater the water pressure the higher the boiling point. Cavitation will cause damage over time, this is most commonly seen in water pumps and even in wet sleeve diesel engines.

cavitating: a propellor is creating an vacuum on the foreside of the propellor blade. That vacuum can be so great that it creat vacuum bubbles on the tips of the blade (the water is simply not quick enough to fill the vacuum). The vacuum bubbles create noise when they implode (and it is also bad for the propellor as it causes damages to the propellor). Generally: the faster a propelor turns the greater the vacuum created, the more you cavitate (or have the change to cavitate when you are in a fancy submarine with specialy designed propellors).

Then again desperation in previous wars certainly has led to vehicles being forced into grossly different roles than what they were designed for. For example the German Dornier schnell bomber being converted into a horrible heavy fighter due to a lack of interceptors. So certainly there is a precedent for sending vehicles on borderline suicide missions if the objective is critical enough to make it worth the risk.

Cavitation is a phenomenon where the rotation of the propeller blades generate, by moving the water away from them, low pressure areas around the edge of the blades. Pressure determines the boiling point of water. At sea level it's 100° C at lower pressures the boiling point lowers as well. In the case of a ship propeller it creates boiling water at the edges of the blade with popping bubbles and lots of noise. Another known effect of cavitation bubbles is that their bursting actually has kinetic energy and with time will create pitting on the propeller and reduce it's efficacy.
@Kwodlibet
@Kwodlibet 7 жыл бұрын
Easiest way to experience cavitation is with your home's water pipes - especially in old houses. Whenever they make weird booming noise because you run the taps - that is cavitation as pipes vibrate in such a way that bubbles of water vapour form. Cavitation as a process has an aggressive war application- cavitation torpedoes. The cone of a torpedo is shaped in such a way that it creates a bubble in front and (at least partially) around of itself = such torpedo travels through water as if it was slightly denser air giving it much, much greater speed and thus making it more difficult for a target to evade one. A torpedo blast that damaged and sunk "the Kursk" was apparently due to a testing of such a torpedo that went wrong.
@benjaminricci5458
@benjaminricci5458 7 жыл бұрын
Not to correct Jingles, but for a slightly more detailed description of what cavitation is, here you go. (Please correct/inform me if I am off) Cavitation is due to the area of low pressure behind the fins of the propeller. The low pressure, just as if you were to put soda in a vacuum, kind of sucks the air out of the water and forms many tiny bubbles on the back of the fins, effectively boiling the water. These bubbles rapidly pop and cause lots of vibrational noise in the water.

Cavitation is caused because the pressure drops on the trailing end of the propeller. If the pressure drops low enough then the water boils which creates the bubbles which makes a lot of noise. The worst part about that noise is that is stands out against the ambient ocean sounds. As you go lower the pressure is higher which allows you to turn the screw faster without "boiling" the water.
@BinkyTheElf1
@BinkyTheElf1 7 жыл бұрын
Cavitation is also very tough on props themselves. The small implosions will actually cause pitting damage and wear on the trailing edge of propellers over time-- particularly surface vessels. I don't know enough about subs to say whether this is a maintenance problem for them.

cavitation also degrades your propeller blades. the imploding cavitation bubbles basically eat away at the propeller due to high pressure and temperature changes during the process. Once the surface is disturbed it tends to attract future cavitation bubbles to the same spot and you get quite deep circular holes which can significantly weaken the propeller blade which in worst case make it just fall off and in the best case make it inefficient and noisy

Cavitation is the speed of the water across the screw, that creates such a low pressure, that the water actually boils. This creates steam bubbles of the blades. The higher the pressure around the vessel, the higher the pressure of the water around the screw. Thus higher speeds are possible the deeper you are.

Just want to thank you Jingles for branching out to other games. I love WoT but it is always good to see someone else besides myself who considers themselves crap enjoying games and giving me a look at some other games to consider. Perhaps the whole WoT controversy has silver lining. Peace.

Cavitation bubbles are a vacuum, so they collapse almost instantly which produces a lot of noise

Jingles , I think waiting for a while after getting a contact is usually better than snapshotting a tube off, because sub packs seem to run alternately at speed while the others listen. Also you're basically putting up a big sign saying here I am! Which leaves you quite vulnerable to sneaky boats in the area. Learnt this the hard way after a undetected kilo blew me out of the water and my crew went to the gulag.

Hi there. I live in Dunoon, next door to Sandbank and Kilmun which encompass the Holy Loch. Sorry to be so pedantic but the US subs were never docked shoreside as in the game illustration. (I'm sure as an ex Andrew you'll know this Jingles). All boats were either alongside the submarine tender, barge or floating dock. And as a safety issue Greenock is pronounced GREENnock. Love the new diversity on your channel.

Jingle's you can launch your TLAM's from a max depth of 400 feet. You don't need to go to periscope depth. The anti ship missle's can be fired from a depth of 200 feet.

I have to admit it was a bit painful seeing all the Navy-nubee mistakes, but it's all part of the fun. Rule #1 when in enemy territory - always use your periscope and check the surface!

For more on cavitation, read Tom Clancy's "Hunt for the Red October". Half of the book is just about that (if memory serves. I mean, that's about the only thing I remember from it)

I just got the game on sale. I actually like the land attack missions. As you mentioned years back it takes a week or two to get the hang of the game but it's worth it.
