Good video. I'm a cheapskate. I sewed my own base layer and socks with different styles of synthetic fleece material. After building the layers I walked out onto the patio at night when it was 40F and while sitting there was a slight draft wearing nothing but the socks and the base layer. It was still comfortable even after 30 minutes. Then I remembered that "cotton kills" line. So, I put my blue jean over top of my fleece lower and when back outside it felt like someone poured ice water on my legs. I guess everyone isn't the same. I'm glad cotton is good for you. Oh. My feet stayed cold for decades even during Summer. For a few months I walked 6 miles a day for 7 days a week. Now my feet are warm even on the coldest days wearing cotton socks. Who knew my feet were so cold because of bad circulation? Oh well.

@@SamkoTradBow lol I'm one of those men whose confortable enough with his manhood to not be afraid to say I sewed something. I've read that a lot of men who also sew, only say I built myself a shirt ot whatever. That's OK. The main thing is stay warm.

Spot on Jason I am trying to figure this out myself right now. Looking for a solution that is bowhunter friendly and as thin as possible but works at temps 20 degrees or so, love to see example of your thermal and jnsulation layer. Thanks again!!

My thermals are not made anymore. They are just polyester fleece thermals, nothing fancy or expensive made by rocky. Used to get them at Walmart for 20 bucks each. Have like 20 pairs. My insulation layer is anything in my closet. Hoodies, wool sweater, sweat pants, pullovers, etc. You would be amazed how warm a pair of Walmart sweatpants can keep ya. Another great idea because knees and calfs rarely get cold but thighs and butts do is to also use a pair of thick shorts or cut off sweatpants for one more layer without bulking up around your boots. I have 3 pairs of Walmart sweat pants that are cut to shorts just above the knee. Work awesome.

Good video. It's frustrating buying hunting cloths these days. ESPECIALLY the outer camo's. I think they used to make superior camo's compared to today, but the hunting industry has people thinking they need all kinds of "technology" like "wind shear" or "wind stop" etc which just makes noise & cost more. I used to have camo's from "Shikari cloth" that I paid $220 for (bibs & coat). It was quiet as wool or an old cotton t-shirt but the weave was so tight water beaded up off it & it was effectively windproof in all but the windiest weather in which case you could barely feel any wind getting through. It had a brushed tricot (polyester) lining with 200 grams of thinsulate. It could be single digits & I was comfortable (& I got cold easy). I only wore a couple light layers under it. Yet with the double full length leg zippers I could vent heat so I didn't have to pack it in & could wear it up to around 50* temps. It was Awesome. Saddle cloth was almost as good but that is gone too. I'm so sick of the options vs cost today I'm almost to the point of looking into importing from China if I could find someone to get it from. The only high quality cloths I can seem to find these days run $800+ for a similar set up.

@@MrWhiltetail where do you buy dwr spray? I believe that's what kuiu treats thier stuff with as does columbia, and others. I have a few garments that are dwr and they work great and not noisy at all.

A friend of mine owns Stealth Outdoors & I think he said he used some from Atsko that worked well when he dabbled in making clothing. I can't remember for sure so I sent him a message, but he is up gun hunting & I'm not sure when he will get back. I also sent an email to Atsko a few minutes ago about it. I'm not sure if it will do much for wind resistance or not but I might give it a try if I don't have to worry about adding noise. Electrical Boot drier is a MUST! My sweaty feet make the inside of my boots moist and then they get way too cold if I don't dry them out!

I am a left hander also on both bow and fire arm ANF have been known to get up to 5-10 miles from my vehical and hunt all three stages ( tree stand, ground blind, and hunt and stalk )depending on the situation and am also on a very fixed income I have some of these things and also use a lot of military surplus gear but I am wondering how well frog tongs would work for a rain/wind stopper and how well they would hold up when needed for use in all three types of hunting aspects also i have used what are called Mickey mouse boots ( military surplus winter boots ) not a lot of tread and have had my feet get cold in them any ideas? Also the best head gear I have for hunting is a full pull over reversible head cover mask that comes down over the face and far down over the neck it is very thick and helps keep my face ears and neck covered but am wondering how to wear a billed hat with it to help with Sun in the eyes shade to cut glare any ideas on that?

Not sure on the frog toggs. I know they are water resistant bit not sure on the durability to hold up to 5 or 10 mile hikes regularly. But I do believe duck tap will stick to frog toggs so that will help patch any tears you do get.

Cotton is cold. Don't do that against your body. If have to walk it takes so long to dry. Polypropylene is pretty cheep at Walmart along with polyester. If you can afford a high content Marino, that's ideal next to skin but 100 bucks for tops and same for bottom..

Great breakdown.Biggest problem I found with my gear this year was my feet. Last year was colder but his year was much damper. I used waterproof boots with felt pac liners. Tried the liner sock, vapour barrier, warm sock and boots whiched worked great last year but my feet froze this year. Any suggestions? Nate

chemical toe warmers work good. Baffin titan boots are super warm yet you can still climb tree stand stick. Artic shield boot insulators work good too especially with a hand warmer stuffed in there.

Usually a base layer is the layer against your skin. Then a thermal or insulation layer

Yes. All rain gear I know of is also wind proof as well. There are some exceptions like canvas and some others. But most rain gear is wind resistant

I like the boundary storm tight pants and the storm light jacket. Also really like the kuiu chugatch jacket. But find myself using the storm light jacket more. I have a video I did on the first light stuff a few months ago

@@steveboggs2595 the boundary storm tight pants are very durable and are my favorite! The storm light jacket is super light weight and take almost no space in your pack. When rains I put it on and when it stops I take it off.
