This is a great video. If you have the room. It doesn’t hurt to have a blanket in the boat in case you or another boater falls in, wrap them in it fairly tightly. I fish until freeze up and will even carry a small propane heater a put it next to me on my feet or under the console , also help to get your hands warm.

Great information John! As a kayak fisherman I live by a rule of 120. If the combination of the wind temperature and the water temperature is below 120 I will be wearing some kind of a dry suit or immersion clothing of some sort. Because as a kayaker unlike a boater it's not a matter of if I am going to flip my kayak at some point in time ... it's just a matter of when. And in the front hold of my kayak is a dry bag with a change of clothes as you suggested plus a towel, a lighter and some strike anywhere water proof matches and fire starter.

Great advice. Cold weather fishing can be productive but miserable at the same time. I’ve been a fan of Stryker since I started trout fishing on the White River. Fished in single digit temps for hours comfortably. The right clothes and the right layers makes all the difference. Great video John, much needed information on a serious subject!!

Years ago fishing BASS Invitationals I witnessed several anglers wearing heavy wool socks with sandals. Blast off air temperature in the low 20's. I had my insulated hunting boots on. Now the sandal wearing anglers are famous in the fishing world but I won't mention their names. They swore that it was comfortable and provided better footing in the boat. Now I agree with that because the hunting boots in the boat are cumbersome. I don't like the cold weather anymore. The older you get the cold makes you feel miserable.

Solid advice John..Back when I lived up in the cold we used to wear a pair of the Under Armor cold gear leggings and long sleeve shirts and a pair of insulated jeans and a hoody. That used to get me by unless it was raining.. which unless it was a tournament I kept my ass inside on those cold rainy days.

Kayak tip: fished in the 30’s in WI out of the hobie and no matter what I did my feet were getting cold first out of any body part and staying cold. Realized I was staying seated too long with my feet in the holsters of the pedals for extended periods of time. My elevated feet were causing less blood flow to them and making them colder. Next trip which was equally cold I made a habit of lower my feet and periodically and standing and the problem went away.

John, all good advice. I use army surplus wool glove liners just like you use cotton gloves. When the fall water temp gets below 60 deg I carry my winter survival bag that has 3 towels and a full change of clothes. It stays there till water temps get back in the 60’s.

Great advice, I like the merino wool also because it doesn’t hold a lot of water either so if you end up in the water with the fish you are not as weighted down as if you’re like me, you’re not, and 250+ you don’t need anything helping to anchor you down and restricting your movement

My feet and hands are the worst issues. I’ve found that wearing a very thin wicking sock, like merino wool, under a medium thickness sock works well for me. I’d avoid cotton socks since they do not wick moisture.

Never commented before but it sounded Iike I was talking to myself! Good solid advice...well thought out. For gloves I use a heavy weave wool (fingerless), they keep the hands warm even when wet. To reduce weight and bulk I've switched over to the Arc'Teryx brand for pants and jackets. I don't work for them (!) but after years of experimenting I found them to be a great overlay on top of merino wool undergarments. Fishing in cold weather isn't cheap. Even though I wear insulated hunting boots in cold weather on the boat I'm still apprehensive that they'll drag you under pretty fast should you fall off, considering they'll be too hard to kick off...I wear crocs and wool socks as long as it's bearable. Just my thoughts, sorry for being long winded!

My first year fishing tournaments I fished as a nonboater. The last tournament of the year was in November on Greenwood Lake on the NY/NJ border. The day started out in the upper 20's and it was snowing. The boater I was with made a cast but his hands were so cold he let go of his brand new rod and reel and it hit the water near the driver's consol. He was so freaked out he stepped on the wet gunnel of he boat and went in. I was just reaching down to grab the rod when he landed on it sending it to the bottom. He was wearing a snowmobile suit which I knew would make him heavy so when he grabbed the side of the boat I just grabbed the seat of his suit and flipped him into the boat. He was number two in the point going into the tournament and stayed fishing in a wet snowmobile suit the whole day. At the weigh in he found out that he couldn't not have made a big enough move to take Mr. Bass anyway. This video just reminded me of that story. Never did get the rod and reel back.

Have you watched Randy Blaukat video a couple weeks ago on how to keep your feet warm? He says wool socks and sandals is all that’s needed in any type of cold weather fishing while on a boat. Just curious to know what you think about his comment? I subscribe to both of your channels and enjoy watching how each go about things. I did order one of those Striker toboggans and mitts you had on your video today. I’m also looking at one of the Striker Ice jackets and bibs for cold fishing days.

Kayak guys have a whole other worry- they can't wear anything that would restrict their movement or fill with water if and when they fall in. Which means things like insulated boots are out- anything that will fill with water when you fall in isn't good- and boots definitely will. That said- you're not looking for like a dry suit or something- you just need something that will keep a reasonable amount of water out for a reasonable amount of time- and companies like NRS have you covered. They have their kayaking bibbs that are specially made to not fill with water- they will let some in, don't expect to be comfortable or like choosing to go for a swim- but they will keep enough out that you can function and get yourself back to safety. Because I'm telling you- if you've never fallen into truly cold water- it's like having a hundred knives stabbing you all at once and then- as soon as you feel like you might be recovering from the shock- the pain sets in, muscles start to cramp, you start going numb- you have very little time to get back to safety and now you can't move. Whereas, if you fall in with the bibbs on- some water goes down the neck hole and you scream like an 8-year-old girl but all that's really hurt is your pride- and maybe your wiener. My wiener doesn't like cold water.... sounds like a country & western song huh?

I use pretty much the same system as you except I always wear a Aftco Reaper Hoodie and I wear ski goggles when I am driving. Reaper Hoodies built in buff helps keep the neck nice and warm and I can pull it up when running. The googles will not fog up and they keep from having the digging in from sunglasses like you said. I have some awesome gloves from a company called Kast Gear that are made for steelhead fishing with the thumb and point finger exposed but they aren't in business anymore. Do you like the Striker Stealth Gloves? I am almost ready to buy a set.
