I have an MSR XGK I bought in 1978, I have replaced some o-rings over the years, and just bought a spare pump. It has never let me down. When younger I used to do alot of cross country sking and camping. Now I am older I find it is still a great stove to take with me in my truck when out exploring.

I just picked up a Dragonfly, tried the alcohol and iso butane, but when it gets to be -30 C those stoves will leave you hungry or frustrated.

I used the dragon fly in Iceland down to around -35. I used petrol though. Take longer to get the blue flame, but worked fine. The ultra low temperature and low oxygen reviews is exactly why I bought it, for mountaineering across Scandinavia.

I noticed when using my Coleman stove or lantern, if I fill them up too much with white gas I have to pump them during use. I believe this to be that there isn't enough room for air until some of the fuel has been used. Thus, I only fill them half way.

love all your videos! I also really like the white gas stoves! I only use 2 stoves my homemade penny can stove and an MSR dragonfly white gas stove! The dragonfly has an additional control valve on the stove itself and is very easy to adjust from a powerful jet flame to a light simmer flame. I only bring the small fuel bottle and for the dragonfly. The stoves are so fuel efficent you don't need much. Never liked the idea of those butane fuel canister stoves for the same reason you expressed. Also if its wet and I want to make a fire I can always open up the white gas bottle and pour a little on. My friends still don't know why I'm so good at making fires ha ha

For butane canisters, you can float them in a container of water to find how much fuel remains. The liquid level inside will be level with the surface of the water; the empty portion will float above.

just a terrific video but for Summer a day at the Beach I was thinking of buying several boxes of not dry fuel but BBQ starter cubes and using a couple in my Esbit stove. I know they only last a few minutes but if I have enough for the day I think it may be worth it?

white gas is just not easy to find so I end up using petrol most of the time. MSR whisperlight international is brilliant equipment tho, a trucker lended me some of his diesel right out of his truck when I was in a bind and it worked fine, just extremely dirty!

Curious, what is purpose of the trench dug on the inside of your shelter.? Storage? Surely not latrine. Also notice you're using walls, not a floored tent. Have you found that to be superior to tent camping? Simply because there's so much more room? How is floor in tent so flat, was it all tightly packed by you guys by stomping/rolling on it, or is it naturally that firm when you choose your site? How does that shelter stand up to wind? This is done for sitting. The snow is stomped down with snow shoes then allowed to set. The shelter is floated on the snow and held there with long pegs. Very good in the wind. You can see the process in this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oGWuZ5p-gLl3jpY

white gas in Uk is very hard to. Find and is very expensive the only white base in my rather is primed power fuel But hi would like to know how well the whiperlite runs on karesene aka paraffin here in Uk as that is easy to hobtain

Hi, I am having a problem with this stove. It primes perfectly well, but after a while running on blue flame, it starts to go off and liquid fuel starts to come out instead of gas. The nosel of the stove starts to spit kerosene fuel (that is what I use) instead of vaporizing it. Also, this usually happens when I pump it to the full or pump it more than 8 times. Doesnt happens when I pump lightly.

I use the wood burning stoves in winter I found that in extreme cold the plastic parts on the mrs stove did not stand up. I have snapped the pump or smaller parts

Too many knives. I used to take too many of them. Now often just 2, a necker and pack knife unless there is some overriding reason. I no longer pack a little shovel as there are too many rocks in my area and hardly ever used it. Aluminum cookware. It all got pitted and now only take SS, cast iron or Ti. I don't pack a wool blanket any more. All I ever got was itchy from the darn thing and froze one too many nights. I used to pack candy bars /coco/etc etc for energy but then got really overweight for years and gave myself Type 2 diabetes. Lost most of the weight and for now beat back the high blood sugar but avoid candy and sugar stuff at all costs.

When did the international come with those legs? I don't recall it ever looking like that. That looks similar to the regular Whisperlite.

that's the older International. All of the WhisperLites used to have the wire legs. The newer ones have the flat stamped legs which fold out quickly and don't have to be locked into the burner. Sad to say, the Trillium base (for snow) which fit the older models doesn't fit the new ones without modification.

Do you have a lot of experience with the regular whisper light (white gas only)? It was my best friend for a long time, but the last few years I stopped taking it, because I've been having problems with it. It lights, but then just sputters, makes a lot of noise, never generates a proper flame or heat. You mentioned something about it being a bit of an art on when to turn it up. MSR staff told me they thought it could be old gas, or a bad batch, but I don't think so. The jet is clean, it's the right one for the fuel. The generator was taken apart and cleaned. All for nothing. So I'm wondering now that I've watched you're video, do you think it's possible that I've just gotten lazy about heating it up? Could there be some sort of vapour lock or something happening? I've left it in favour of my firebox, because I can cook with just little twigs, and for just a couple ounces more, bring along an alcohol stove to use inside it, but when there is actual cooking to do, or as you said, in real cold, the whisper light is a good little stove. I just can't trust it anymore though. What do you think?

It actually sounds like a bad pump more than anything. If the pump is malfunctioning either the gas isn't properly pressurized (so you get a burst and nothing else) or the valve isn't letting through fuel properly (causing sputtering and bursts of fuel). For priming I actually suggest using only a little bit of fuel initially and only opening the gas valve again once the flames have almost died down. That gets me a consistent blue flame.

If your old Whisperlight has a flat-topped jet, you do not have the shaker needle. You can send your stove to Cascade Designs in Seattle and have it updated to the domed jet, which can accommodate the shaker needle. Your jet is probably gunked up.

@@5USgRWFH I do not have the shaker jet. That is for sure, but they gave me a pin to clean it out manually. I don’t know what’s going wrong, but I’ve completely disassembled it. Jet, generator, fuel line, and even the plates for the burner and it still goes wrong. They think it’s bad gas (no, not like after eating chilli), but man it must be awful sensitive if that’s the case. After talking to them, and I can send it in to be turned into a multi fuel, which I think I’ll do one day soon. For now I’m playing with my firebox’s and alcohol stoves, and went so low as to buy a cheap butane stove for quick family trips.

I used to love my whisper light. Used it for years, but after if giving me grief on a couple trips, I went with a stick stove, which is 100% packable. Not sure what you're saying about them not being. My firebox will boil water almost as fast as a stove, and once going will beat it. One tip for using the whisperlight if you're forced to use it in confined areas is a paste fire starter, or primer. Just spread a dollop on the generator and light it. No flare ups.

I have a ready supply of white gas and it burns clean. I know some boaters use alcohol stoves or at least that's what I heard. Have you looked into that?

MegaWoodswalker Yeah I know. An Origo stove is a Trangia steroids (Google it and you'll see what I mean) but has all of alcohol's issues regrading heat output. Besides, an Origo is too big for a dinghy. It's either a Trangia or an MSR/Optimus/Primus on kerosene. Kerosene's got a long history as a boat fuel.

@@MegaWoodswalker ohhh I didn't know! I kept looking at MSR's website, that's how they had it listed. BTW, did you ever have to use the Arctic fuel pump for your MSR yet? I noticed they mention about using it for temp under 32 degrees.

I never have used that. This one worked well down to negative 10F. Never tired any colder. Just make sure it pumps good before heading out.
